Shish kebab, chicken bravas with garlic aioli and calamari with seasoned rice: Why eating healthily this summer just got a WHOLE lot more fun

With bikini season well and truly on the horizon, most of us are keen to look and feel our best in time to enjoy summer fun to the maximum.

And thankfully, the days of calorie counting, joyless salads and unhealthy crash dieting are over.

Summer, come rain or shine, lends itself to alfresco dining ¿ enjoying colourful, fresh dishes with company. This summer ¿ look forward to what you can eat more of!

Summer, come rain or shine, lends itself to alfresco dining – enjoying colourful, fresh dishes with company. This summer – look forward to what you can eat more of!

We have become more knowledgeable about how to make healthy choices that also happen to taste utterly delicious – and nobody does it better than on the Mediterranean.

Helen Seward, M&S Nutritionist agrees: 'The Mediterranean diet is a perfect example of how we should be eating. It is intrinsically lower in saturated fat and instead includes more of the good fats which explains why it's linked with better heart health and lower risk of cardiovascular disease.

The sheer range and variety of ingredients means that Mediterranean food manages to be both scrumptious and good for you at the same time

Helen explains: 'Its high plant based ratio naturally lends itself to colourful dishes of fresh, vibrant ingredients so it's easy to enjoy a diet that doesn't only taste amazing but is truly nutritious too.

'Refreshingly it concentrates on what you can eat more of, rather than what you should reduce so you don't feel deprived.'

And the good news is, M&S have come up trumps this summer to help us achieve those health goals, whatever the occasion…

Guilt-free Grilling

Barbecuing and grilling is one of the tastiest methods of cooking meat and fish – creating a deliciously smoky flavour as any excess fats drip down onto the coals or tray during cooking.

Helen's top tips for healthy Mediterranean living

Fish: why not try swapping in a few fish options in your week. It's a great lean protein source full of good fats, vitamin D and E. If you're not a big fan of fishy tastes, why not try some milder varieties such as trout and seabass or top with a little pesto. The shores of Spain and Italy have inspired some of our new seafood dishes such as Calamari with Seasoned Rice, Sardines with Garlic, lemon & Roquito pepper and Lightly Smoked Seasbass with salsa verde – all ready prepared, so a really easy way to get a bit more dish in your diet

Grains: Any and All! When it comes to wholegrains they're all good choices. Wholegrains are packed with nutrients – about 70% more than their processed varieties. We've got everything from freekeh to bulghar wheat and even British quinoa to choose from - our new 'Grains, Couscous, Roasted Aubergine and Mint' is a tasty way to try new grains and eat some more veg!

Plant oils: olive, avocado, sunflower and rape are all great healthy plant oils which are naturally lower in saturated fat and instead high in mono and poly unsaturated fats. Swapping sat fats with unsaturated fats in the diet helps to lower cholesterol. But remember – good fats are still high in calories so you only need a little in the diet. Houmous is a great alternative to mayonnaise as it is high in good unsaturated fats – our new silky smooth Velvet Houmous is delicious served on the side of salads or with grilled meats.

Veg: instead of just one – choose more of all veg. The more colours you pick the more nutrients you'll gain, oranges are rich in carotenes, greens rich in B vitamins (especially the dark ones), purples are rich in anthocyanins.
