A top member of Donald Trump's legal team has repeatedly claimed the president is not under investigation - despite the commander-in-chief himself tweeting that he is.

Jay Sekulow appeared on NBC's Meet the Press and CNN's State of the Union on Sunday morning to make his case.

'Let me be clear here, the president is not and has not been under investigation for obstruction,' he told NBC's Chuck Todd.

He was then pressed by the host on Trump's tweet from Friday, in which he wrote: 'I am being investigated for firing the FBI Director'.

Sekulow said the president's comment was not a real statement, instead claiming it was in response to a Washington Post report suggesting he is under investigation.

'I think you’re reading more into the tweet than what’s there,' the lawyer said.

'The tweet from the president was in response to the five anonymous sources purportedly leaking info to the Washington Post.'

Sekulow, who is Chief Counsel of the American Center for Law and Justice, repeatedly many of the same lines during an interview with CNN's Jake Tapper.

'Let me be clear, the president is not under investigation. The president is not a subject or target of investigation. That tweet was in response to a Washington Post story,' he said on State of the Union

When Tapper drilled the 61-year-old lawyer about whether Trump firing Comey even had the potential to rise to the level of obstruction of justice, he said: 'The president has the authority as the chief executive to make those kind of decisions.

'This is not some complicated case.'

Sekulow's interviews on Sunday morning came after Trump appeared to acknowledge for the first time Friday that he is under federal investigation as part of the expanding probe into Russia's election meddling.

He lashed out at a top Justice Department official overseeing the inquiry, reflecting his mounting frustration with the unrelenting controversy that has consumed his early presidency.

'I am being investigated for firing the FBI Director by the man who told me to fire the FBI Director! Witch Hunt,' the president wrote on Twitter.

His morning missive apparently referred to Rod Rosenstein, the deputy attorney general whose role leading the federal investigation has become increasingly complicated.

The White House initially tried to use a memo he wrote to justify Trump's decision to fire FBI Director James Comey, but that Trump action may now be part of the probe.

However, Trump ruined that line himself by revealing later he made the decision to sack Comey before getting the memo.

It was reported this week the president is increasingly angry over the investigation, with advisers and confidants saying Trump frequently yells at television sets in the White House carrying coverage.

Those same people close to the president said the former reality television host insists he is the target of a conspiracy to discredit - and potentially end - his presidency.
