RU’s Changing of the Guard – Big News and Giveaways!

A few weeks ago we quietly celebrated RU’s third birthday. We are so proud to look back over the array of talented visiting professors who have shared their craft knowledge, their publishing journeys and sometimes just their thoughts on surviving as an author. In the beginning, we set out to help writers advance their careers. We didn’t count on having such terrific readers and making friends.

So, as RU moves into its fourth year, Kelsey, Adrienne and Tracey have decided the time has come for them to take a small step back and let Carrie, Becke, Jen and Robin steer the ship. Tracey, Adrienne and Kelsey aren’t going away, but like any growing entity, sometimes a change in direction helps keep content fresh.

Today, we are celebrating RU’s first three years before we launch into the next chapter of our beloved blog. Along with the celebration we have some great giveaways, so hang out with us as Kelsey, Adrienne and Tracey tell us what they’ve learned on their RU journey.

Adrienne Giordano

This is an easy question. :-) Aside from the knowledge I’ve gained from not only our generous visiting professors, but from our readers as well, I’ve learned I can accomplish anything I set my mind to. I’ve also learned that the right group of people working together can be an inspiring process. Kelsey, Tracey and I had a vision of what we wanted our blog to be, and we spent six months planning before we launched. The three of us may not write in the same genres, but we were as one in our vision of what RU should be. I’m thankful for that. I’m also thankful for the support Kelsey and Tracey have given me, not only with the blog, but with whatever crisis may have cropped up in the past four years. They’ve become an integral part of my support system and I’d be quite lost without them!

In its three years, our “little” blog has grown into a wonderful resource for writers at all levels. The fact that I made lifelong friends along the way is the added bonus. Yes, I’m a little sad to be handing over the reins, but I’m also thrilled about the plans Carrie, Becke, Jen and Robin have for RU.

Tracey Devlyn

The shorter question would be what haven’t I learned, but I’ll share some things that were real turning points for my career. First off, RU showed me that women could work closely together and not kill each other. No, no, I kid. Well, only a little. I recall Kelsey making a statement once that if the three of us could get through all the decisions of building the website without “breaking up” then we could get through anything. She was right.

RU also taught me how to be fearless. How to stick my neck out there no matter how sharp the ax. For the blog, I contacted numerous publishing professionals and found that they’re as generous and genuine as any of our other Visiting Professors (Pssst, they’re not scary!). And speaking of generosity, RU showed me, on a whole new level, how fabulous the romance community is to its members…and beyond. I love everything about the business and writing process—even the icky and disappointing parts. Because I have the two best buds—Adrienne and Kelsey—at my side.

I’m so incredibly happy that Carrie, Jen, Becke, and Robin are keeping Romance University alive and have all manner of new programming planned (more on that Friday). A huge thanks to our readers for visiting us often and sharing your journey. And an even bigger thanks to all our Visiting Professors and monthly columnists who have given of their knowledge and precious time. Muwah!

Kelsey Browning

Oh, to name only one thing I’ve learned by creating and running RU with these fabulous women? Impossible! I’m going to pull the Southern girl card and claim long-windedness is in my blood. :-)

I’ve learned teamwork and trust are two powerful forces when it comes to accomplishing goals. If you have other people rooting for you and watching your back, you can concentrate on doing your very best work. But if you don’t trust the people watching your back? Sure hope you hid the kitchen knives. Just saying. Tracey, Adrienne and I trusted each other to devote the time, money and hard work it took to launch and maintain RU. I’m glad to say we’re all still on speaking terms, continue to be CPs and even share hotel rooms with no fear of being smothered with a pillow during the night.

Lesson two is decide on your definition of quality and don’t compromise those standards in your work. When we brainstormed RU, we knew we wanted it to be a high-quality learning site for genre writers. We didn’t want to accept advertisers or monetize the site in any way. Call us crazy, perhaps. But our definition of quality was educational and enjoyable, without commercial distractions. Looking back over the posts from the past three years, I feel we’ve upheld those standards and know Carrie, Jen, Robin and Becke will do the same going forward.

Here’s a biggie and one I forgot for a while in my own writing work: Do not be afraid to ask for what you want. When we started RU, we asked editors, agent and writers—some biggies!—to be visiting professors by selling them on our premise alone. Know what? The majority said yes. And once they saw the site, they definitely said yes. In three years, I’d bet we’ve had less than 10 people say no.

And last? I’ve learned professionalism is always in style. Do what you tell people you’ll do. I don’t believe we’ve ever missed a Monday, Wednesday, or Friday post because that’s what we promised our readers from the start. And we’ve certainly tried to treat our guests and commenters with respect and appreciation. So I want to say to you all—fellow faculty members, many visiting professors, monthly columnists and wonderful readers—thank you for supporting this site we love so much. We hope you’ll continue your support as the other ladies take RU to new heights!

You’ll still see the three of us around RU as Carrie, Jen, Becke and Robin have been kind enough to let us sign on as quarterly columnists. But for now, please help us celebrate three fabulous years and raise a toast to the new RU!

To help us celebrate, we’ve recruited some of our friends to help. Our fabulous pals are offering some great giveaways. Here’s the list of what you could win. Just leave a comment and your name gets thrown in for all the drawings. To keep it fair, each person will only win one gift. Here’s the list of what you could win:

  1. $10 Barnes and Noble gift card from Becke Martin Davis
  2. $10 Barnes and Noble gift card from Carrie Spencer
  3. Free class on “Blurbing Your Book” from Laurie Schnebly Campbell

Now, I’m having this problem with my website…kidding!

Jamie, thank you. It’s been an amazing few years. When we started RU I was an unpublished, unagented author trying to break in. Three years later I have four books out and have a terrific agent. Kelsey, Tracey and the RU Crew have been there with me the whole way, so even though I’m a little sad today, I’m appreciative of the gifts in my life.

  21. Wow! You and your friends are so generous. :)

I have only been following RU for about 6 months (when I learned about it) and as a reader only I have really enjoyed it. It is almost a “behind the scenes” look at what writers do so it has been very educational to me, too! I have enjoyed it so much that I have recommended my sister follow RU. When I learned that she was writing a contemporary romance story I immediately told her about this website. She tells me she is just writing as a creative outlet and doesn’t plan to do much but thought she could definitely learn some things even if she is just writing for fun. Thank you for all you do for your writers (and readers)! I look forward to the future of RU!

  22. Thanks ladies for three great years! I’ve been a follower for a long time, first as a bright-eyed hopeful who soaked up all the wisdom I could, and now as a bright-eyed pre-published author. Who still soaks up the wisdom. :) I can’t even begin to tell you all I’ve learned – every post teaches me something. Can’t wait to see what’s next for you and I’m looking forward to the years with Carrie, Becke, Jen and Robin! Good luck to you all.

Thanks so much for the last two and a half years or so that I’ve been visiting RU. I no longer remember how I heard about this site, but I know it was soon after I first wrote “Chapter 1″.

Since then, I’ve learnt a tremendous amount from the visiting professors and the RU crew.

Good luck to the ladies taking over the helm.

  27. Tracey, Adrienne, Kelsey,

You cannot imagine how very much you have helped me over the past two years. Tracey handed me an RU bookmark at my first Windy City RWA meeting and I’ve been an obsessive follower since.

I’m also an avid fan, not only are you women wonderul writers but your generosity, your bond, your sheer capacity for making things happen is inspiring.

All the very best to you and to Jen, Becke, Robin and Carrie, who I have no doubt will keep the RU banner flying high.

  44. As both an avid blog reader and a visiting professor, RU has meant many things to me. I started as an unpublished, unagented writer, reading the first visiting professor post by…Brenda Novak, right? RU helped me kickstart my career, not only by providing high quality writing and publishing advice day in and day out, but also by inviting me to write about my debut author’s journey as my first book came out.

Let’s face it, with all the “noise” on the internet, it’s hard to cherry pick the good stuff. RU is that good stuff.

Thank you, Tracey, Adrienne and Kelsey. I value your friendship and have so much respect for what you’ve built here. And best of luck to Carrie, Jen, Becke and Robin. I know you’ll continue to do a great job!

    • Laurie, If I wasn’t typing on my bitty phone keyboard, I’d write a thesis on how important you are to us at RU. For an entire year, you allowed us to follow your debut year. I can’t tell you how useful those posts were for me while I traversed. The same path not long ago. Thank you so much!

    • Laurie –

I can’t tell you how much it means to have you describe RU as “the good stuff.” It has been so wonderful to see your (and others’) career grow. I hope RU helps many more writers improve their craft and enhance their careers!

Thanks for being here with us for this journey!

      Many, many hugs,
      Kelsey

  47. Farewell, congrats and thanks to Adrienne, Tracey and Kelsey for bringing this fabulous resource about. All the best in your new endeavors.

I found you only recently (thanks Robin!) but you’re on my must-check list every day. The information you provide is solid gold and has helped me with everything from craft to pitching (and getting a request – yay!) and everything in between.

You’re leaving RU is great hands, but it’s still sad to see you go.

  49. Ladies, has it really been three years since RU started? What an amazing site and resource you have built in that time.

I was honored to be the designer who helped build the original blog, the logo and was privy to the goals and dreams that Adrienne, Kelsey and Tracey had for R.U. It’s inspiring to see that your dreams for this blog have become more than a reality – in fact, I would say that you’ve exceeded them greatly.

It takes so much time and forethought to run a site like this smoothly, and you all have done that with constant, meticulous attention, fresh content and an engaging connection to your readers. You have given back to the writing community in a big way. I’m honored that I was able to play a small part in its beginning, and I know the fabulous ladies taking the helm will do an amazing job!

I wish you three all the best! And I hope we can share drinks again at RWA this year. ;)

I remember when RU started. So exciting to see it blossom. I know the next few years will be just as helpful and inspiring. Although I visit frequently, I usually don’t comment, but today I just want to say Great Job, Adrienne, Tracey and Kelsey. Good luck.

And I’ll be looking forward to more terrific offerings as Carrie, Jen, Becke and Robin carry on.

  57. Ladies~
Your time and work on RU has been tremendous! Incredibly supportive and friendly, and even though I rarely commented (unless I was a visiting guest author! :)) I know your work here has been incredibly valuable. And that it will go on past your time, in such competent hands? Brava!

    You will be missed.

  59. Hi Ladies!

How bittersweet this is! I have really enjoyed being a part of RU for these wonderful years…as a writer and a visiting prof. There’s always something to learn in this crazy publishing industry and RU is a dependable, entertaining, and trustworthy place to come for valuable information, and to make treasured friends.

Thank you Adrienne, Kelsey and Tracey for establishing this wonderful and welcoming resource. Here’s wishing you even more well-deserved success in your careers!

And to Becke, Carrie, Jen, and my fellow Entagled author Robin–may you continue to florish in fine fashion here at RU. I’m looking forward to hearing about your big plans!

    Thank you all!

  60. I’m late as usual! I’d like to express my thanks to Kelsey, Tracey and Adrienne for asking me to join them at RU. Many thanks for your patience in showing me the ropes and answering my questions.

I know passing the torch can’t be easy, so thanks for having faith in us staffers to carry on. We’re looking forward to carrying on the tradition.

Great to see all you “lurkers” here today! Thanks for dropping by.

I’m very impressed with all you three have accomplished, both with RU and individually, and wish you tremendous success.

    • Natalie, it’s so great to see you! Yes, thank you for helping us launch RU. I remember the early days when we were terrified no one would accept our invitation to provide FREE lectures. Wow, did we underestimate the power and generosity of writers. :)

Thank you all for your hard work, professionalism and dedication. It’s good to pass the torch, and I know Carrie, Becke, Jen & Robin will bring new energy to an already rockin’ site. All I can say is: WOW!! & THANKS!!
