Geeky Writer Gifts with Pat Haggerty

There is little that makes me happier than receiving some piece of geekery. Gadgets abound in my home, from talking remote controls to the latest in rolling pins. I have no control. And I’m betting Pat Haggerty is the same. =) Make your writing geek’s holiday even brighter with these choice gift ideas from Pat!

Yes, it’s that time again. Time to find the perfect gift for the writer in your life. If you’ve seen my posts in the past, then you know that I lean more than a little towards the geeky. Well I’m not going to change now 🙂

So here we go, my top 10 gift recommendations for writers:

1) Writing software. Writers spend hours staring at their computer trying to get words down on paper (figuratively speaking). While traditional word processors like Word and Pages do a nice job, Scrivener is actually designed for the writing process. Scrivener is available for both Mac and Windows and you can find it here:

Oh, and if your writer has an iPhone or iPad, there’s a version of Scrivener for that too. You can send iOS gifts here:

Here’s the actual Scrivener app:

2) Writing classes. You can find classes on Scrivener a number of places including:

Whatever genre your writer works in, there are tons of available writing classes at places like:

3) Web hosting. Authors, especially new authors, at some point are going to want to put up a web site. Hosting isn’t super expensive and Word Press is a nice technology to build sites with. You can get good WordPress hosting with a domain name here:

4) Wireless Keyboard. If your writing friend does much work on a smart phone or tablet, then they might appreciate a wireless keyboard to make writing that much easier. You can find some good options:

5) Story idea apps. Another fun set of iPad apps which can help writers with story ideas, and can be bought as a unit or as individual apps:

Some similar options that aren’t quite so geeky:

6) Don’t ever underestimate the power of a Starbucks gift card:

7) And of course, writers love books. Amazon has a nice 2016 best books page you can shop from:

Of course, there are also a lot of great books on writing:

8) Software to help writers keep track of a complex timeline:

9) Software to help Mac writers generate ebooks:

10) Walking desk. Finally, if you want your writer to stay in shape while writing, and you have deeper pockets, then you might get your writer a treadmill desk:

That’s it for me. I hope you all have a wonderful holiday season and happy writing!

  1. I’ve been on the ‘encouraging people to write by hand’ trend so I gifted some journals to writer friends and the Starbucks and a few bottles of wine. Wireless keyboard is a great idea.
