Photo credit: voiceseducation.orgHAVANA, Cuba (ACN) — The 23rd Pastors for Peace Caravan, which continued its tour of the US last week, has already collected almost 100 tons of items, mostly computers, medicines, school material and medical equipment for Cuba. The contributions are principally for the benefit of sectors like sports, health and education that have been hit harder by the US embargo against Cuba, the Prensa Latina news agency reported. During their tour, the activists updated the public on the negative effects of the embargo.Over the last few days, the Caravan has visited cities like Chicago (Illinois), Berkeley (California) and Bloomington, (Indiana), as part of a program that took it to Little Rock (Arkansas), Birmingham (Alabama), Pleasant Hill (Tennessee), Pensacola, (Florida) and Silver City (New México) on Thursday. Its members plan to visit at least 90 locations, before meeting on July 19 in McAllen, Texas, to cross the Mexican border, and from there transport its humanitarian cargo to the Caribbean island. The 23rd Caravan has over 60 members, from Canada, the US, Germany, the United Kingdom and Mexico. Retirees

first_imgThis fall at least two of the more successful football programs in the area will have new coaches. Milan has just named Ed Wagner as their new coach. Ed is coming from Bedford North Lawrence where he has been a teacher and coach for the past 7 years. East Central, earlier this year, named current assistant Justin Roden their new coach replacing Tim Behlmer who retired. It is much more difficult to go out and find outside coaches this days. Most schools have a modified freeze on hiring which greatly restricts who you can look at as a future coach. This freeze is usually one that says only no experience or limited-experienced people can apply. Even though the administration might like to wave this for a high profile coach, the rest of the faculty would not stand for it–nor should they. Most schools will not hire head coaches in football unless they are also regular teachers in the school. I would suspect that you will see little difference in either of these two programs next fall, because their systems are well entrenched; and whoever is at the helm will do quite well. After all, Coach Roden and Coach Wagner are quite experienced and not a rookies in any sense of the term. The kids are still in place as are most of the assistant coaches. We will know in a few short weeks how this comes out. Good luck to both schools.last_img read more

Don Cossack and Faugheen share Horse Racing Ireland prize

first_imgDon Cossack and Faugheen were joint-winners of the Horse of the Year Award at the annual Horse Racing Ireland Awards ceremony at Leopardstown. Press Association “I’m sorry he let the side down in the Morgiana. He’s a great horse, but he flopped that day, for whatever reason,” said Ricci. “I hope he comes back the next day. We still have confidence in him. Hopefully he’ll do the business at Kempton and get back on track.” Mullins said: ” He did cut his mouth (at Punchestown), but that took a day to recover from and most horses wouldn’t feel a little cut on their mouth. I wouldn’t use that as an excuse. He’s in great order.” Don Cossack was last seen winning the JNwine.com Champion Chase at Down Royal at the end of October and is set to return to action over the Festive period. The King George VI Chase at Kempton has long been considered his likely target, but connections are not ruling out Leopardstown’s Lexus Chase. Gigginstown House Stud’s manager Eddie O’Leary said: ” Obviously we love him and let’s hope he stays lucky. It will be the King George (next), or the Lexus. Every option is open.” Mullins picked up the National Hunt Award, while Pat Smullen was the winner of the Flat Award. Smullen was keen to pay tribute to his boss Dermot Weld, and said: “I t goes without saying you can’t achieve what I’ve achieved this year without having the job I have. “This was arguably our best year together and I’m hopefully looking forward to more in the future. I have a great agent in Kevin O’Ryan and it’s a big team effort.” The Point-to-Point Award went to Enda Bolger, trainer of top-class hunter chaser On The Fringe, who completed the Cheltenham-Aintree-Punchestown treble last spring. Bolger said: “T he horse is great and obviously we’re going to try to repeat what we did last year. I’m very surprised to receive this award as there’s some great people around and I’m just honoured. I have a great horse, a great owner (JP McManus) and a great jockey (Nina Carberry).” Rising star Jonathan Burke was given the Outstanding Achievement Award. The 19-year-old jockey dedicated the award to his late mother. “I’m doing something that I love and something that I’ve dreamed of from a very young age. I’m very lucky to be in the position I’m in. I had a great grounding working for Willie Mullins, Noel Meade and Gordon Elliott. I’ve had great people round me and I’m very lucky,” he said. Legendary commentator Des Scahill won the Contribution to the Industry Award, while Leopardstown won Racecourse of the Year. Brian Kavanagh, chief executive of HRI, said: “The reputation of Irish racing and breeding is built on the achievements of the extraordinarily talented people in our industry. The HRI Awards allow us celebrate these trainers, jockeys and horses who give us so much to be proud of and I wish all our winners and nominees continued success in 2016.” For the first time in history the award was shared as voters were unable to choose between the Willie Mullins-trained Champion Hurdle winner Faugheen and Gordon Elliott’s five-time Grade One-winning chaser Don Cossack. Faugheen suffered a shock defeat at the hands of stable companion Nichols Canyon on his seasonal reappearance in last month’s Morgiana Hurdle at Punchestown, but owner Rich Ricci is confident he will bounce back when defending his crown in the Christmas Hurdle at Kempton. last_img read more

Host Morocco Crush Home-based Eagles to Lift CHAN 2018

first_imgIn what appears a repeat of Nigeria’s 4-0 defeat in the WAFU Cup final last year in Ghana, the Home-based Eagles were crushed by the same margin by host Morocco in the final of the 2018 African Nations Championship (CHAN) played in Casablanca last night. The Atlas Lions playing before their home fans at the Stade Mohamed V overpowered Eagles, who played most of the second half with just 10 men to join DR Congo, Tunisia and Libya as the only four winners of the competition meant for players plying their trades in the continent.Morocco gave an early warning of their attacking potency when striker Ayoub El Kaabi headed home from Ismail Haddad’s corner kick in the seventh minute, but the goal was correctly ruled out because the ball had passed out of play in its flight.El Kaabi took centre stage again in the 15th minute when he met Haddad’s left-flank cross with an acrobatic overhead kick and rattled Nigeria’s crossbar with the effort, underlining the Atlas Lions’ early dominance.Nigeria came into the game a little more as the first half wore on, but the hosts remained dangerous in attack and finally broke the deadlock just before the interval.A slick move put Abdeljalil Jbira free down the left flank, his pullback from the by-line picked out Zakaria Hadraf and the winger fired a low shot into the back of the net, beating goalkeeper Dele Ajiboye low to his right.Things went from bad to worse for the Home-based Eagles when Plateau United’s Peter Moses Eneji, who was already on a yellow card, scythed down Mohamed Nahiri early in the second half and was sent off for a second caution. The Atlas Lions duly made the most of their numerical advantage, with Walid El Karti doubling their lead on the hour mark when he headed home on the rebound after Ajiboye saved Haddad’s shot, before Hadraf added his second a few minutes later to make it 3-0.A Morocco win at this tournament wouldn’t be complete without a strike from El Kaabi, and the forward duly notched his ninth of the 2018 CHAN when he redirected a shot from Nahiri in the 73rd minute to complete the scoring. Share this:FacebookRedditTwitterPrintPinterestEmailWhatsAppSkypeLinkedInTumblrPocketTelegramlast_img read more

Kim shoots 62 for 2-shot lead after three rounds at Wyndham

first_img LIVE TV Si Woo Kim had a hole in one on the way to a 62 for a two-shot lead over Doc Redman and Rob Oppenheim through three rounds of the Wyndham Championship on Saturday.Kim, who’s at 18-under after 54 holes, made history three years ago when at 21 he became the youngest winner of The Players Championship. Now, he’s seeking his first victory since — and playing strongly wherever he tees it up.Kim has broken 70 in nine of his last 10 rounds, including all four at TPC Harding Park to finish tied for 13th at the PGA Championship. He has continued that stellar play at Sedgefield Country Club, where he won his first PGA Tour event in 2016.Redman had a 63, while Oppenheim set a career low on tour with a 62 in second at 16-under.Billy Horschel shot a 65 and was three strokes back at 15-under. Mark Hubbard (64) and Jim Herman were another stroke back at 14-under. Herman shot a 61, a career best and tied for lowest round of the tournament. But it was Kim’s sizzling play that stood out in this one. He got going when his 8-iron on the 161-yard, third hole found the cup for his third ace on tour. Kim clipped the cup on the par-3 12th, settling 14 inches away for another birdie.Kim kept it up with birdies on the 15th, 16th and 17th holes to take the lead.Oppenheim was bidding for a 60 when he birdied the next-to-last hole to move to 17-under. But his only bogey of the round on the final hole dropped him back.Oppenheim, 40, has put himself in line to make the FedEx Cup playoffs for the first time, moving up from 145 on the list (only the top 125 start at The Northern Trust next week) to a projected 77. He’d love to add his first tour title to the mix, too.Redman, 22, is also seeking his first PGA Tour win. He joined the tie for second after matching his career low score of 63. Redman took bogey on his opening hole, then had eight birdies the rest of the way.The PGA Tour moved up tee times, grouped competitors in threesomes and sent them off on the first and 10th tees to beat the bad weather expected later Saturday. The early, dry conditions set off a run of low scores that contenders had no choice but to keep up with throughout the round. In all, 52 of the 77 competitors finished with rounds in the 60s.There were two 61s, the lowest score this week, from Jim Herman and Zach Johnson, the Payne Stewart Award winner who is striving to make the playoffs after a subpar season. Johnson was projected at 109 in FedEx points after starting the round outside the playoffs at 129.Past champion Webb Simpson (65) and Peter Malnati were at 13-under.Image credits: AP Associated Press Television News Last Updated: 16th August, 2020 09:44 IST Kim Shoots 62 For 2-shot Lead After Three Rounds At Wyndham Si Woo Kim had a hole in one on the way to a 62 for a two-shot lead over Doc Redman and Rob Oppenheim through three rounds of the Wyndham Championship on Saturday SUBSCRIBE TO US COMMENTcenter_img First Published: 16th August, 2020 09:44 IST WATCH US LIVE Written By FOLLOW USlast_img read more

Six Nations 2019: England’s ‘remarkable’ depth softens Maro Itoje loss

first_img“This is no discredit to Maro because he’s an absolutely wonderful player and I love watching him, but where England are at the minute compared to other home nations is just the remarkable strength in depth,” Moody, speaking on behalf of Land Rover, told Omnisport.”Maro went off and you ended up with [number eight] Nathan Hughes playing in the second row. To bring Courtney Lawes on — he’s a world-class player, in any other side in the world he’d be starting and there’s also Joe Launchbury. “You’ve got four second-rows there that could start in any other team in the home nations, they are absolutely brilliant.”So, the amount of pressure coming on each and every player to perform week in and week out [is high] because the amount of players queueing up underneath them is remarkable.”As a coach that is exactly what you want, you don’t want players resting on their laurels thinking their place is assured, you want everyone thinking ‘Christ, if I don’t play well today I could potentially lose my spot.’ “And that just drives everyone’s performance and that’s why we’re seeing England play as they did at the weekend because it’s not just in the second row, it’s in the back row, the front row, fly-half, centres, wing, it’s just wonderful to watch at the minute and wonderful to watch Eddie Jones pick from virtually a fully fit squad.”Countdown to #LeCrunch #ENGvFRA #CarryThemHome  pic.twitter.com/IcSr79jzeE— England Rugby (@EnglandRugby) February 6, 2019Powerhouses Manu Tuilagi and Billy Vunipola have seen their respective England careers marred by injuries in recent years, but both started in Dublin and Moody believes the duo make a huge difference to Jones’ side.”There’s absolutely no doubt in my mind that without Billy Vunipola, England are a different team,” he said.”I think the players he plays against, they know how dangerous he is and it’s not just the danger he poses of running over you as a defender, it’s getting past the gainline and being able to offload out of contact.”His presence creates space outside him because it attracts more defenders into the hit. It’s one thing trying to make the tackle [but] it’s another trying to stop the offload, all of a sudden that drags defenders in and creates space out wide for everyone else. “It’s the same case for Manu Tuilagi, you look at the opportunities created at the weekend and many of them were off the back of them two carrying the ball hard and creating space out wide in attack for others.”On the flip side in defense, look at some of the hits Manu put in. So many were just well timed and that’s what he can bring, that destructive power in the tackle in the centres. “It wasn’t just Manu or Bill on Saturday, you look at the defensive prowess across the board. The stat that blew me away at the weekend – the tackle count was quite equal – but it was the dominant hits, it was nearly 50 dominant hits, which is a crazy amount.”Normally you’re looking at 10 to 20 if you’re lucky. Nearly 50 in a game, you as a defender smashing the attacker back over his own gainline, that to me just says this is a proper team performance.”Lewis Moody is a Land Rover ambassador. Land Rover shares and understands the values of rugby. @LandRoverRugby England confirmed Tuesday that Itoje definitely will miss this weekend’s contest against France at Twickenham, while reports suggest he also will be out for the trip to Wales on Feb. 23.Itoje is expected to play a part in the closing rounds of the tournament and, in the meantime, Moody — a member of England’s victorious 2003 World Cup team — is sure the likes of George Kruis, Joe Launchbury and Courtney Lawes will fill the void. PCC, LNP Officers Accused of Random Seizure of Petty Traders’ Goods

first_imgSeveral street vendors have accused officers of the Paynesville City Corporation (PCC) and the Liberia National Police (LNP) assigned at the ELWA Junction of arbitrarily seizing their goods, causing them to lose thousands of Liberian dollars every day. In an interview with the Daily Observer yesterday, a young street seller explained that three PCC and four LNP officers stopped him while he was on his way home with his wheelbarrow filled with goods. The total value of the goods in the wheelbarrow was about L$53,000. The items included women’s body sprays, pampers, soaps of all kinds, and other toiletries, said the seller. He said it was around 9:30 p.m. on Friday, July 8, when the seven officers rushed on him to seize his wheelbarrow.“They came with a pickup truck and forcibly took my wheelbarrow, put it in the truck and took it away,” the young man said. He explained that as it is usually the case, he headed to the Paynesville City Hall with the hope that he could retrieve his wheelbarrow and the goods.“When I went there I only saw the empty wheelbarrow and no one there could give account of what happened to my goods,” the man, who identified himself only as Eric, said.He said since the incident he has been going to the PCC headquarters for his goods to no avail and no one has told him anything about what happened to his goods.Eric said the situation has rendered him penniless and he is now helping friends to sell their goods to get “something” for his daily bread. He said he dropped out of school in the 8th grade and has been managing funds at his disposal doing petty trading.“Now I only depend on friends to survive,” Eric said. He is meanwhile calling on PCC and LNP authorities to ensure that years of efforts are not wasted simply because the officers are instructed to seize goods from street sellers.Eric told this newspaper that he wants Paynesville City Mayor Ceyvette Gibson to ensure that PCC and LNP officers stop harassing ordinary Liberians who are simply working for themselves through petty trading. He said at times PCC officers pepper spray marketers while chasing them to seize their goods. Meanwhile, when contacted a PCC officer at the Paynvesville City Hall refused to discuss the incident involving Eric, saying it was a job he and his colleagues have to do.Share this:Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)last_img read more

Economist calls for Jordan’s resignation

first_imgBungled sugar estates’ write-off“Imagine coming into an inheritance of a profitable business. This business is the umbrella corporation for a range of successful companies. When you took over this umbrella corporation, you decided you didn’t like a bunch of employees from one of the larger companies under your control, so you fire them and decide to sell out the company. You then realise that you made a bad decision despite everyone’s warnings that it was a bad decision from the beginning. You now have to borrow money to get back to some semblance of square one.”Economic Advisor to the Opposition, Peter Ramsaroop on Wednesday said that this was the predicament Government now found itself in as a result of the asinine decision-making that was embarked on by Finance Minister Winston Jordan, who, he noted, has clearly misled the President into thinking he was the man for the job.Ramsaroop gave what he called a layman’s breakdown of the dangerous developments taking place at the highest levels of Government – decisions that will leave countless Guyanese in debt.He was at the time speaking to the most recent pronouncement by Minister Jordan that Government would now have to borrow $15 billion to reopen the Skeldon and Enmore Sugar Factories that were fully functional at the time the coalition took office.Ramsaroop spoke to Guyana Times following the protests by sugar workers at the closed Wales Estate and sought to again warn of the coming financial crisis that the Administration has set the nation on course for.According to Ramsaroop, while the Guyana Sugar Corporation (GuySuCo) did have its problems, it earned much-needed foreign currency for the country in addition to providing jobs for thousands of Guyanese – sugar workers on whom untold thousands depend for their livelihoods.“Jordan’s financial card tricks as he calls them have real consequences for real people….the Minister cannot be making blunder after blunder only to come change them subsequently to be forgiven.”The economist, in speaking to the mismanagement of the industry at a macro level, questioned, “How is it the Minister only realised after shutting the factories down that it would be more profitable to sell them as working facilities?”Ramsaroop added: “Recall the Minister had introduced VAT on education, thinking that was a bright idea and he had to backpedal on that; recall the Minister had increased the taxes for miners, he had to backpedal on that too.”He said for each year the coalition has been in office and sought to tinker with a complex taxation system it has backfired, but the real consequences were lost on those in high office.“I am honestly wondering now if we can survive to 2020 as a viable economy…Billions of foreign currency earnings will be lost with the closure of the factories, not to mention the societal and other economic pressures that are still to be brought to the fore as the impact begins to sink in.“This is February…people are going to celebrate this week a festival after hard work, but for thousands of sugar workers, while Minister [George] Norton and his acolytes palance on the front pages with skimpily clad models, sugar workers are now coming to grips with the fact that the part payment of a severance will soon be used up and the reality of another paycheque not forthcoming will eventually begin to boil even more uncontrollably.”According to Ramsaroop, “had President Granger heeded the advice of those that had been in office and do the right thing in ensuring there was a continuity of fiscal policies that had been yielding fruits, Guyana’s economy would not have been faltering as it is now because of the ill-advised and downright illogical policies that are being presented by the Finance Minister.”He told this publication that the Finance Minister should do the honourable thing and resign or the President should quickly dismiss him.last_img read more

D.Mooney had 2 2’sWhat  a  pleasant change in the weather a really beautiful sun filled day and no wind to provide protection to the course .Every advantage was taken  as the scoring was really exceptional both Gross and in the nett. After the horrendous weather of the winter it was such a pleasure to play such a good course rated 51 in the Ireland Golf Digest top 100 courses .it is good to see that they are not resting on their laurels and several bunkers have been introduced during the winter. In the Gross section the exceptional scoring was led by l Damien Mooney. He led the onslaught with a drive to the heart of the first green and holed a 7 foot putt for eagle. He promptly bogied the par 5 second having had a three putt. He then parred all the rest of the holes on the front nine except the par 3 7th which he birdied. He was out in 33 which is 2 under. A clear leader you might think well no he was not .Michael McGeady just back from Spain had birdied 4 and 5 both par fours and also the 9th par 4 to be out in 32. Toiling along behind was Garrett Mallon in 35 and on 36 were Noel Callan ,Enda Kennedy and young Finian O’Doherty.Damien and Michael birdied 10, Michael dropped a shot at 11 and Damien went into over drive with 3 birdies in the next 4 holes while Michael had one birdie .This proved to be the end of the contest between them as the both parred the last two holes and so Damien won by one shot. This was not the end of the great scoring though as local professional Connor Mallon came home in a best back nine score of 33.In the nett section the scoring was equally good as four players who had tasted victory already this year battled it out. Ricky Boal was really shooting out the lights with a nett 31 for the first nine. His pursuers Kieran Martin with a 35, Eddie McHugh and last week’s winner Stephen Harris both on 36 were not ready to concede at this early stage .They all tried valiantly but could not make up the deficit entirely although at the end Ricky’s margin of victory was down to 2 strokes from Eddie with Kieran 3rd three strokes back and Stephen 4 back. The placing’s in the golfer of the year categories were all sorted out as well. Kieran Doherty who had been leading on 30 points did not add to his total nor did the runner up Enda Kennedy but none of their immediate pursuers did either .In the GROSS Justin MacLochlainn who had won it with one competition to go duly strode home and in a keen contest to be runner up Michael McGeady just got home from Noel Callan the Alliance vice –captain. So having endured one of the worst seasons for frost and snow and cancellations the alliance is coming to a close for this season having only missed one competition in all. No rout, but Trojans will take win

first_img AD Quality Auto 360p 720p 1080p Top articles1/5READ MOREThe top 10 theme park moments of 2019 With USC posting gaudy stats, like 724 yards of offense, 39 first downs and 37 minutes in time of possession, it’s hard to imagine the Trojans only held a 28-21 lead with 13 minutes remaining. That contradiction between score and stats forced Carroll to go out of his way to rationalize the Trojans’ performance. “Sometimes you’re going to play well and not win. Anyway. I don’t really care,” Carroll said. “I just like getting wins. I don’t know what more you can expect. “I’m a football coach. I’ve been coaching for 37 years and you don’t win every game everything-to-nothing. It just doesn’t happen like that. I wish it did, but it just doesn’t. You’ve got to live with the game and play it.” The tone underscored a feeling that maybe things didn’t go quite as smoothly as expected, despite that overwhelming difference in yardage, as Arizona gained just 245 yards. It’s too bad USC didn’t play defense as well on the field as in the locker room Saturday, or the No. 1-ranked Trojans would have experienced far fewer tense moments against Arizona. USC coach Pete Carroll considered this game a test for the Trojans to play to their ability, no matter the opponent. But the Trojans’ 42-21 victory over Arizona before 90,221 at the Coliseum didn’t prove much, except that a pair of fourth-quarter touchdowns could make the score more lopsided than it was for most of the game. “A win is a win,” quarterback Matt Leinart said, defending the outcome. “Maybe it doesn’t feel or look like it, but it’s a win.” center_img It’s also the result of increased expectations, built during USC’s 27-game winning streak. “I don’t think expectations are too high. They are what they are,” Carroll said. “It doesn’t bother me. I’m letting you know what I feel. This was a heckuva win, when you play a good defense and score 42 points.” Arizona is also a 2-3 team and winless (0-2) in the Pacific-10 Conference. That fact wasn’t lost on offensive lineman Winston Justice, who took himself to task for the closer-than-expected result. “It was just a bad game. It was all our fault too,” he said. “I think it was the whole offense. I had a bad game, personally.” Justice committed three holding penalties (two were enforced) after Arizona coaches alerted the officials to watch him closely during the game. “It was just one of those games,” Justice said. Maybe Justice didn’t get the memo on how good Arizona was. But neither did anyone else apparently. Although USC scored on its opening drive, it started out slowly for the third consecutive game. “We need to stop starting off slow,” said Justice, a Poly High graduate. “It’s going to hurt us when we play a better team.” USC (5-0, 3-0) was lucky to lead 14-7 at halftime, as Leinart threw an interception and tailback Desmond Reed, playing because Reggie Bush sprained his knee and missed part of the first half, fumbled. There was also an embarrassing effort from the kickoff team, which allowed returns of 51 and 76 yards to Arizona’s Syndric Steptoe. And the defense also got in the act, as cornerback John Walker allowed a 38-yard pass that set up Arizona’s first touchdown and cornerback Justin Wyatt gave up a 42-yard touchdown pass that cut the Trojans lead to 21-14. “We don’t give up fade routes,” secondary coach Greg Burns said. “We’ve got to clean that up. Our defense doesn’t do that.” It all set the stage for an interesting fourth quarter. With USC ahead 28-21, Leinart threw a 29-yard touchdown pass to Dwayne Jarrett. Or did he? Replays indicated Jarrett juggled the ball but were inconclusive and the officials never reviewed the play. “I was in,” Jarrett said. “I knew I bobbled it but I held it up. At the last second, I tried to drag my feet. The ref was right there. We’d have scored anyways.” Just in case, Carroll called out, “May Day,” USC’s code for getting the field-goal team out quickly, to prevent a review by the officials. Arizona actually responded and drove to the USC 6-yard line, but quarterback Richard Kovalcheck’s pass got tipped by linebacker Collin Ashton and intercepted by safety Ryan Ting. “The ball felt like it was in the air forever,” Ting said. For perhaps the third consecutive game, USC tailback LenDale White demonstrated he’s as valuable as Bush or Leinart, with 179 yards and four touchdowns in 24 carries. “I want the ball in my hands every play,” White said. USC NOTES: White has gained 376 yards in the past two weeks, the most by a Trojan tailback over two games since Marcus Allen gained 398 in consecutive starts in 1981. White has done it in far fewer carries (43 vs. 90). … Arizona coach Mike Stoops thought Jarrett bobbled the fourth-quarter TD reception. “I saw a bobble,” Stoops said. “I don’t know why they didn’t review it. I didn’t see his feet.” 160Want local news?Sign up for the Localist and stay informed Something went wrong. Please try again.subscribeCongratulations! You’re all set!last_img read more

ALL-IRELAND SEMI-FINAL BRAWL IN DONEGAL PUB LANDS WOMAN IN COURT

first_imgA NUMBER of women argued and fought in a pub after watching Donegal win last year’s All-Ireland semi-final, a court has heard. The incident took place on August 26 last year as patrons of the Shamrock Bar in Ballybofey watched the game. Before Letterkenny District Court today Clarissa Cairns, from Townparks, Convoy, pleaded guilty to assault, being threatening and abusive in a public place and being drunk in a public place. Inspector Michael Harrison told the court that the entire incident was captured on CCTV images in the pub and involved a row between several women. He said the footage showed 19-year-old Cairns dancing in the vicinity of two other women on the dance floor of the pub.Cairns could then be seen running out to the smoking area of the bar where the offence took place.“The camera captures the defendant arguing with another female and a row develops. Miss Cairns is involved in that row,” said Inspector Harrison.“It involves a whole pile of girls fighting with each other; it seems to go on for quite a while,” he said.Defence solicitor Donagh Cleary said Ms Cairns made a statement to Gardai saying she was very drunk on the evening in question and later apologised to all concerned.“She apologised for stuff she wasn’t certain she did do,” said Mr Cleary.Inspector Harrison added: “There was a huge amount of alcohol taken.”Mr Cleary said his client deeply regretted the incident. She was hoping to embark on a career in healthcare and had just returned from a holiday in Seville, Spain, run by the Wider Horizons Project.Judge Paul Kelly said he would give Cairns “an opportunity” as this was her first offence. He told Cairns: “When you take part in this sort of behaviour you will find it difficult to travel to other countries in future.”He ordered her to make a €150 donation to charity. The Shamrock Bar has since closed.ALL-IRELAND SEMI-FINAL BRAWL IN DONEGAL PUB LANDS WOMAN IN COURT was last modified: September 9th, 2013 by John2Share this:Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)Click to share on Reddit (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pocket (Opens in new window)Click to share on Telegram (Opens in new window)Click to share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)Click to share on Skype (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window) Tags:All-Ireland semi-finalbrawlcastlefinndonegalShamrock Barlast_img read more

Draw ignites 2010 World Cup fever

first_img7 December 2009The 32 teams participating at next year’s Fifa World Cup™ finals discovered their fate on Friday evening when the Final Draw for South Africa 2010 took place in Cape Town. While South Africans learned that the host nation’s opening match at Soccer City, Johannesburg on 11 June would be played against Mexico, it was the Group D line-up which caused arguably the biggest stir.Germany, Australia, Serbia and Ghana will battle it out for two qualifying places for the Round of 16, meaning two nations with passionate support will depart the tournament early. There could be a high-profile casualty from Group G too, after Brazil, Korea DPR, Cote d’Ivoire, Portugal were drawn together.TV audience of 200-millionAn estimated global television audience of 200-million joined the 2 000 invited guests in the Draw hall in watching the colourful and entertaining ceremony unfold. With African sporting stars such as athlete Haile Gebreselassie, rugby player John Smit, cricketer Makhaya Ntini, and footballers Matthew Booth and Simphiwe Dludlu assisting with the Draw, along with England’s David Beckham, it was always going to be an exhilarating occasion, but the undoubted centrepiece came when the eight groups were revealed. An early highlight of the draw was the eye-catching encounter between England and USA, scheduled for 12 June, which evokes the Americans’ famous 1-0 win over their transatlantic cousins at Brazil 1950.Argentina, Nigeria and Greece will get the chance to revive their group rivalry from 1994, while the heavyweight collision between Portugal and Brazil on 25 June also has the feel of a derby. Group A: South Africa, Mexico, Uruguay, France Group B: Argentina, Nigeria, Korea Republic, Greece Group C: England, USA, Algeria, Slovenia Group D: Germany, Australia, Serbia, Ghana Group E: Netherlands, Denmark, Japan, Cameroon Group F: Italy, Paraguay, New Zealand, Slovakia Group G: Brazil, Korea DPR, Cote d’Ivoire, Portugal Group H: Spain, Switzerland, Honduras, Chile A night to rememberWith such an array of stars, the event dazzled from start to finish. After a welcome sequence from Lions Head, the mountain that provides Cape Town with such a dramatic backdrop, award-winning musician Johnny Clegg performed “Scatterlings of Africa”, a song made famous by the Academy Award-winning film Rain Main.Fittingly, the first speech of the night came from the man without whom a Fifa World Cup in South Africa would never have been possible: the country’s former president, Nelson Mandela. The 91-year-old, speaking in a special video message, urged his nation to make the most of their opportunity as tournament hosts. “We must strive for excellence in our hosting of the World Cup, while at the same time ensuring the event leaves a lasting benefit to all our people,” he said.Next it was time for two special presidents to take to the stage. Fifa President Sepp Blatter and South African President Jacob Zuma showed their excitement at both the Final Draw and the 2010 Fifa World Cup itself in an entertaining dialogue lasting several minutes.Giancarlo Abete, President of the Italian Football Federation, then handed over the holders’ Fifa World Cup Trophy to Blatter, confirmation that sport’s holy grail is in South Africa and ready to be contested next year.Legendary Portugal striker Eusebio, born in neighbouring Mozambique, was introduced to the crowd before examples of the “Win in Africa, With Africa” campaign were showcased before an expectant audience. Beninese singer-songwriter Angelique Kidjo duly took to the stage to perform her Grammy-nominated song “Agolo”.JabulaniThe first duty of the show’s guest presenter, Academy Award-winning actress, Hollywood producer and proud South African Charlize Theron, was to show off the official 2010 match ball, adidas’s Jabulani, a name meaning “to celebrate” in Zulu. The multiple Grammy Award-winning Soweto Gospel Choir continued the theme of happiness with a lively rendition of “Pata Pata” before the arrival of Draw master and Fifa secretary-general Jerome Valcke signalled the moment of truth. Some of the assembled coaches will have headed away feeling confident; others concerned by the task presented here; yet at least all now know what lies in store as they begin their planning and preparation for next year’s showpiece.Source: Fifa.comlast_img read more

Swami-turned-Minister in M.P. moots ‘cow Ministry’

first_imgChairman of the Madhya Pradesh Gau Samvardhan Board (Cow Protection Board) Swami Akhileshwaranand Giri, who was recently elevated to the rank of Cabinet Minister, has sought the formation of a ‘cow Ministry’ in the State. As per the board’s proposal to the government, the ministry can avail a part of the funds earmarked for the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) works.“When Anand Mantralaya (Ministry of Happiness) can be constituted, why can’t there be a Gau Mantralaya? Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan himself keeps a cow at his residence. The Gau Samvardhan Board has prepared a proposal and conveyed it to the Chief Minister,” he said.“Currently matters related to the cow are handled by the Animal Husbandry Department. We want a ministry exclusively for the cow. The cow should be kept out of animal category,” he said.“The board has a meagre annual budget of ₹16 crore and no powers, so a separate Ministry is needed,” he said. The ministry could promote “cow-related industry,” create jobs for rural youth and conduct research in the field of cow breeding, he said. Rajasthan had set up a directorate for cows, but it too was inadequate, he opined.Funds from MGNREGA“Over 1.5 lakh cows are taken care of at 604 registered gaushalas (cow shelters) in Madhya Pradesh. Around the same number roam free on roads. The number of cows is expected to increase by 25% in the next livestock census,” he said.“The board has proposed that out of MGNREGA funds (around ₹15,000 crore for the State), ₹1,000 crore can be given to the cow ministry,” he said.last_img read more

Bahujans must come to power: Chandrashekhar Azad

first_imgChandrashekhar Azad, the fiery Dalit activist from Uttar Pradesh shot to prominence in 2017 when he was jailed for over a year for a Thakur-Dalit clash in Saharanpur. Called ‘Ravan’ by his followers, in a subaltern challenge to BJP’s Ram, Azad famously put up a signboard in his village that read, ‘The Great Chamars of Dhadkhauli Welcome You’.The 32-year-old, who leads the Bhim Army, is seen as one of the faces of an emerging radical Bahujan movement. With his twirled moustache, iconic dark blue scarf, and Enfield Bullet, Azad makes a statement wherever he goes, and it’s obvious he was the inspiration behind the character of Nishad in the recent Bollywood film, Article 15.He is in jail again, this time in Delhi, over protests against the demolition of Ravidas Mandir, a temple for poet-saint Ravidas of the 16th century who has a large Dalit following. He met The Hindu when he was in Karnataka a few days before his arrest. Excerpts:The demolition of the Ravidas Mandir has created a new flashpoint between Dalits and the Centre. But the government says it was the Supreme Court that ordered the demolition for violating zoning norms? It was the Delhi Development Authority that sought to demolish the temple, not the Supreme Court. The government used the court to achieve its end. The issue finally boils down to respecting Bahujan cultural symbols. PM Narendra Modi visited Ravidas Mandir in Varanasi earlier this year and said he was a devotee of Sant Ravidas. Now he must take the lead in restoring the temple or his hypocrisy will be exposed. We will launch a nationwide protest demanding its restoration on the same spot. The recent Bollywood film, Article 15, had a character modelled on you. Did you see the film? There has been criticism that instead of telling the story of caste oppression from the perspective of the Dalit, the movie did it from the perspective of a Brahmin officer. What is your take on this?I have not seen the film. But the opposition to the film by the upper castes and the right wing is telling of how the entire system works against Dalits. Maybe it is not time to tell the story from a Dalit perspective in the mainstream. Maybe the film wouldn’t have released at all if that were the case. But I have heard of recent films in the South with Dalit protagonists. I feel the progressives among the upper castes need to come forward to question caste hierarchy. But it is time we lead our struggles and tell our stories and those from other castes need to support us.Many are critical of the style of Bhim Army, though not its substance. They argue that violence only begets more violence. What is your take?We have the right to fight for our rights and don’t have to tolerate any oppression. It is time our voices rang louder on the streets. Bhim Army is Ambedkarite in its outlook — Educate, Organise and Agitate. We believe nothing comes without struggle and we are ready for any sacrifice. We are not attacking anyone, but if someone comes into our homes and hits us, we will not hesitate to retaliate in self-defence. When the system is so geared up against us, what else can we do? I was blamed for the violence in Saharanpur and arrested, but nobody speaks of the violence wrecked on us. The state brands Dalits who raise their voice as Naxals, as we have seen in Bhima Koregaon, and Muslims as terrorists.Does the rise of radical Dalit leaders and their large followings among the youth indicate the failure of mainstream Dalit politics?Mainstream Dalit parties have failed repeatedly. A student who has all the resources but fails exams repeatedly cannot claim to be a brilliant student. Most of our politicians today are crorepatis; they come from dynasties that don’t know our problems. We cannot let their failure fail the movement. These parties are severely compromised on the ideological front, including in allying with a brahminical party like the BJP. As these leaders remain stuck in AC rooms, the youngsters fight on the streets, giving rise to new leaders and a militant movement. The BJP now seeks to claim the legacy of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, even to defend the revoking of Article 370 in J&K. The BSP has supported the move. How do you view the government’s handling of Dalit issues?Brahminism is in the DNA of the BJP and its ideological mentor, the RSS. This seeks to impose the Manusmriti, which doesn’t allot any power to Shudras and Dalits. While we can become the President of India, we still cannot enter a temple. The social forces that this regime has emboldened, giving them impunity, have translated into increased atrocities against minorities, Dalits and tribals. Dalits are the biggest targets of lynchings, even more than Muslims. On Kashmir, the future of Dalits cannot be seen in isolation. It is linked with the aspirations of Kashmiris. It is better if BJP stops trying to appropriate Ambedkar as it is a legacy they can never claim and it only exposes their hypocrisy.RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat has called for an open debate on reservations. The RSS-BJP has always been anti-reservation and their agenda is to subvert reservation. By giving reservation to the poor among upper castes, they have done exactly that. Reservation has always been about correcting social and educational backwardness, not economic. This government has been keen on disinvestment of PSUs, which essentially hits Dalits, as there is no reservation in the private sector. Mohan Bhagwat’s statement only reflects the anti-Dalit mindset of the RSS-BJP. We are ready for a debate on reservation with Mohan Bhagwat. Let us debate on what we have really got from reservation in the last seven decades. Even today 54% of Dalits don’t own any land. We will tell what we have gained and what we have lost because of caste in this society. The Opposition has failed to defeat BJP electorally, despite the Mahagathbandhan of the SP-BSP in UP. How can you counter the BJP, even as many aspirational Shudra and Dalit classes cosy up to the party? The only way to fight BJP is to take to the streets. They may have a majority in Parliament but we [Bahujans] have a majority on the streets. All pro-Constitution forces need to unite for this fight. Though we may have failed once, that should not deter us. More than political alliances between parties, we need to mobilise people on the ground. Any truck with the BJP is against the interests of the Bahujan community. We need to expose this and convince people. Was the SP-BSP alliance fraught with contradictions, as in the villages it is the OBCs and Dalits who are often in confrontation with each other? Is an OBC-Dalit alliance practical? We in the Bhim Army believe the Bahujan community includes all oppressed classes — Dalits, Adivasis, Shudras and minorities — and we will work towards bringing these classes together in the villages at a social level. Bahujan unity is the key to countering the larger Manuvad [parties] ruling us today. There has been an argument that the Left and Dalit movements must unite. Do you feel synergising these two mass movements is the way ahead?Bahujan politics is the politics of kamzor log (the weak) and we are ready to support anyone participating in these politics, in a pro-Constitution manner. I believe, while there may be several organisations working independently, we need to come together to fight on common issues, be it various Dalit organisations or even the Left. But enough of us voting others to make them leaders, now we want others to vote for our leadership. Historically, it is time this happened.Bhim Army is in expansion mode. Your success in UP has been organic. Can you replicate it elsewhere? Our success in UP is largely due to the Bhim Shaalas we run, evening and holiday schools in villages and slums where we educate Bahujan youth in English, help them with studies and impart political education to help them cultivate a Bahujan consciousness. Bhim Army runs 1,700 such schools in UP, which has given us a committed cadre. We will soon begin Bhim Shaalas across the country. India is a diverse land and we will factor that in. Bhim Army will be the loudest voice on the streets for Bahujans everywhere. Is Bhim Army on its way to becoming a political party or are you caught between remaining a social movement and entering electoral politics?Bhim Army is not averse to electoral politics, but it is not an organisation that is only political. We will always remain part of the larger Bahujan movement; electoral politics is only one of the means to further the cause. We follow both Ambedkar and Kanshi Ram and believe the Bahujan community, which has a majority in society, must come to power. You had dropped ‘Ravan’ from your name but now it is back?It is the people who lovingly called me Ravan for taking on the BJP. But I realised BJP was trying to polarise the people as supporters of Ram and Ravan in Varanasi when I announced I would contest against Narendra Modi. So, I announced I was dropping Ravan from my name. But now that the elections are over and people like calling me Ravan, it is back.adhitya.bharadwaj@thehindu.co.inlast_img read more

Saina Nehwal, Kidambi Srikanth Crash Out, PV Sindhu Enters Quarters of World Badminton Championships

first_imgBasel: PV Sindhu, two-time world silver-medallist, produced yet another commanding performance as she demolished Beiwen Zhang of United States in straight games to advance to the quarter-finals of the BWF World Championships in Basel, Switzerland on Thursday. On the other hand, Saina Nehwal was upset by Denmark’s Mia Blichfeldt 21-15, 25-27, 12-21 in an hour and 12 minutes to bow out of the tournament in pre-quarterfinals. Sindhu won 21-14, 21-6 in the women’s singles pre-quarterfinals match that lasted just 34 minutes. The fifth seeded Indian had lost to the ninth seeded American opponent in the Indian Open final last year.Sindhu now face second seed Tai Tzu Ying of Chinese Taipei in the quarter-finals.The Indian completely dominated the match, giving no chance to her American opponent. They were levelled 5-5 but from there, Sindhu led all the way to pocket the first game. The second game was even better for Sindhu as she led all the way from 1-1, taking five straight points to 6-1 and then another six points on the trot to reach 14-5 before wrapping up the match.Saina started extremely brightly but lost her way in the middle to eventually lose her match. Saina took the first game with ease and was leading for most of the second game but Blichfeldt came to level terms and despite much resistance from Sania where she saved game points, the Danish eventually forced the decider.Saina could not keep pace with Blichfeldt in the decider and was completely dominated. In the men’s singles, B Sai Praneeth dished out a superlative performance to stun world no. 8 Anthony Sinisuka Ginting and progress to the quarterfinals but Kidambi Srikanth and HS Prannoy suffered defeats to bow out of the showpiece event.Seeded seventh, Srikanth lost 14-21 13-21 against Kantaphon Wangcharoen of Thailand in the pre-quarterfinal match that lasted 40 minutes while Prannoy’s campaign ended with a loss at the hands of world no. 1 Kento Momota of Japan.Prannoy showed glimpses of brilliance, especially in the opening game, but couldn’t stop Momota from registering a 21-19 21-12 win, his fifth victory over the Indian in as many encounters.World No 19. Praneeth, who had reached the finals at Swiss Open this year, took just 42 minutes to dispatch sixth seeded Anthony of Indonesia 21-19 21-13 to set up a likely clash with another Indonesian Jonatan Christie, seeded fourth and the reigning Asian Games champion.(With PTI inputs) badmintonbwf world championshipskidambi srikanthPV Sindhu First Published: August 23, 2019, 12:59 AM IST Get the best of News18 delivered to your inbox – subscribe to News18 Daybreak. Saffron is the colour for CM Yogi Adityanath’s office in Lucknow

first_imgThe office of the saffron-robed Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath in Lucknow is now getting a touch of saffron. The Lal Bahadur Shastri Bhawan, known as the secretariat annexe building which houses the chief minister’s office as well as those of senior officials, is being painted in saffron replacing the traditional white and blue.Estate department officials said everything from the outer walls to the terrace of the building is being painted in the saffron shade. The building which also has the office of the chief secretary has traditionally sported white and blue colours but a proposal was recently made for repairing and painting the building and saffron colour was approved by all, officials said adding that work on it has already started. The saffron-coloured building that houses Yogi Adityanath’s office. Photo: ANI. The chief minister, referred to as Maharajji by his disciples, is clad in saffron-coloured outfits and according to sources after he took over, the towels which cover his chair and curtains of his office were also changed to colours matching the saffron hue. The towels in the office of the chief minister on the fifth floor of the building are of a saffron hue and the curtains, though not saffron in colour, are close to it, sources said.OPPOSITION CRIES SAFFRONISATIONRecently, the chief minister had flagged off a fleet of 50 saffron-coloured buses and even the stage for the inauguration was decorated with saffron-coloured curtains and balloons.Besides this, the education department had distributed saffron-coloured school bags to primary schools students and the booklets that were distributed to mark 100 days and six months of the Adityanath government were saffron in colour as well. The information department diary of the state government also bears a saffron cover.advertisementThe Opposition, however, does not seem happy with the change and has charged the state government with “saffronising” even official buildings. This is all about “saffronisation” of the state and its politics, Samajwadi Party spokesperson Rajendra Chaudhary said.Congress spokesman Dwijendra Tripathi said giving any particular colour, which is associated with a political party, is not right.ALSO WATCH: Saffron intrinsic to India’s identity: UP Legislative Assembly speaker Hriday Narayan Dixitlast_img read more

US Routs Dominicans, 106-71

first_imgBILBAO, Spain — Kenneth Faried kept up his sharp shooting with 16 points and the U.S. national team rolled to a 4-0 start with a 106-71 victory over the Dominican Republic on Sept. 3.The Americans surpassed 100 points for the second time in the tournament — and they were “held” to 98 points in their other two games. They led by only three points after one quarter but had no trouble extending that as the game went on, as the Dominicans’ willingness to push the pace simply played into the Americans’ hands.Faried made 8 of 11 shots, a 73-percent clip that actually lowered his percentage for the tournament after the Denver forward came into the game hitting 81 percent. The Americans will finish Group C play Sept. 4 against Ukraine before playing their round of 16 game on Sept. 6 against the fourth-place team from Group D, which is still to be determined. The Dominican Republic (2-2) will face Turkey on Sept. 4, still in position to advance. The Dominicans played without Houston Rockets forward Francisco Garcia, who entered the day’s play tied for fourth in the tournament with 21 points per game.He appeared to turn an ankle late in the Dominicans’ victory over Finland on Sept. 2, and though he finished the game, was walking gingerly as he went to the bench after his teammates had come out to warm up.The Americans ended up winning nearly as easily as their 105-62 exhibition victory on Aug. 20 in New York, though the Dominicans hung with them a little longer than that night. The U.S. lead was just 25-22 as the Dominicans attacked fearlessly but didn’t have any answer for the Americans’ bigs. Faried had three straight baskets, a couple of them powerful dunks, and Anthony Davis knocked down a jumper to turn a seven-point lead into a 44-29 cushion.Gay got the final four points of the half, making a pair of free throws after he was clobbered intentionally on a breakaway by Edward Santana, then banking in a jumper that make it 56-41.A 25-point third quarter was followed by 25 more in the fourth, capped by a series of dunks from end-of-the-bench players Andre Drummond and Mason Plumlee.(BRIAN MAHONEY, AP Basketball Writer)TweetPinShare0 Shareslast_img read more

At Oklahoma State, Money Really Does Buy Greatness

first_imgThere was a great longer article in the Tulsa World at the end of last week about Mike Holder’s first 10 years on the job. That culminated on Wednesday which was his 10th anniversary.Did you know that only two men have been there longer as the AD?Ed Gallagher (1915-31) and Henry P. Iba (1935-69). “Pretty fast company right there,” Holder says. “I like that.”What I found to be interesting is how much money OSU has raised (and lost!), mostly during Holder’s tenure. Here is Holder’s estimate. From 1970 through 1999, Holder says, OSU spent a total of $10 million on athletic facilities. In 2000-10, he reports, OSU spent $400 million on facilities. Now not all of that was for football, but we all know the king of American sports is what drives economics at an athletic department. Because of that, I wanted to look at the correlation between money spent and winning percentage. How much is each win worth if we presume that all that money was spent on football (and it wasn’t).[1. We’re also not taking into account inflation etc. This is not an economics blog.]Here’s a look. You want to be on the bottom right of this graph where you don’t have to spend a ton of money but you still win a ton of games. OSU has been on the bottom left (good for the pocketbook!) and the upper right (good for morale!)Screen Shot 2015-09-17 at 11.23.56 AMThe answer to the latter is easy. OSU won 171.5 games between 1970 and 1999 (for the college kids, there used to be ties … crazy, I know). At $10 million spent on facilities, that’s $58,000 a W. OSU has won 117 games since 2000. That’s $3.4 million. Success is pricey.“We’ve won in every sport here, except in football,” Holder told the Tulsa World. “We wanted to try to do something to change that, so when you went to the football stadium on Saturday, you actually had a chance to win the football game. I wanted to see what that was like.”It feels pretty good, doesn’t it?If you’re looking for the comments section, it has moved to our forum, The Chamber. SCOC ruling nod toward importance of diversity in law lawyer

first_imgOTTAWA (NEWS 1130) – In a landmark ruling the Supreme Court of Canada has decided law societies in Ontario and British Columbia are entitled to deny accreditation to the proposed law school at Trinity Western University on an equal access argument. The country’s top court ruled that limits on religious rights are reasonable in order to protect the rights of LGBTQ2 Canadians. The much-watched case pitted two significant societal values — freedom of religion and promotion of equality — against one another.LGBTQ2 groups are applauding the ruling, but say there is still a lot of work to do to achieve equality.Associate law professor Emma Cunliffe at UBC believes the high court ruling is a recognition that access to justice is improved when lawyers come from as many walks of life as possible, and represent as many kinds of people as possible.“The decision today represents an attempt on the part of the Supreme Court of Canada to promote diversity within the legal profession.”Cunliffe says the Supreme Court found that law societies have a legitimate interest in promoting equality in the legal profession.Meantime, others are not as pleased with the decision.“It does look like religious freedom can be restricted by equality rights,” Janet Epp Buckingham, a professor at Trinity Western, said following the ruling.Trinity Western University reacting to Supreme Court decision. The court found that to be discriminatory. So what’s next for Trinity Western’s law school? TWU Executive Director Earl Phillips says it will take time to go through the 200 page decision. He says the core of the school’s community covenant is about the dignity and worth of every human being — and that will not change. However, he adds it will be looked at.“We’ve reviewed the community covenant in the past, we will review it again in the future. And with this decision, it’s something we’re going to be reflecting on.”Phillips believes the Supreme Court’s decision actually signals a loss of support for diversity.“Diversity will only be our strength if we actually do allow for difference. Diversity has to allow for difference,” he explains. He adds he’s disappointed the Court doesn’t see room for a small Christian university that holds traditional values to open a law school.last_img read more

SpaceXs new crew capsule aces space station docking

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. — SpaceX’s new crew capsule has arrived at the International Space Station, acing its second milestone in just over a day.No one was aboard the Dragon capsule launched Saturday on its first test flight, only an instrumented dummy. But the three station astronauts had front-row seats as the Dragon neatly docked Sunday morning and became the first American-made, designed-for-crew spacecraft to pull up in eight years. If the six-day demo goes well, SpaceX could launch two astronauts this summer under NASA’s commercial crew program. Both astronauts were at SpaceX Mission Control in California, observing all the action. While SpaceX has sent plenty of cargo Dragons to the space station, crew Dragon is a different beast. It docked autonomously, instead of relying on the station’s robot arm for help.Marcia Dunn, The Associated Press read more

IsraeliPalestinian relations bedevilled by lack of framework UN envoy says

“The unease, suspicion and cynicism that bedevil Israeli-Palestinian relations can be attributed in large part to the fact that the disengagement is not taking place within an unequivocally agreed framework for the next steps toward the overall solution to which both sides claim adherence, i.e., two states living alongside each other in peace,” the UN Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process, Alvaro de Soto, said in the monthly briefing – his first – on the situation.Israelis need to be assured of their security and, besides an improvement in the daily lives of Palestinians, the Palestinians need to be provided with hope for the future, he said. The Palestinian Authority must be empowered to counter militancy and extremism as “an element of central significance in the preparations to take control over the areas that Israel is withdrawing from,” Mr. de Soto, who has been on the job for six weeks, said. With a win for one side seen by some as a loss for the other, satisfying Israel’s interest in withdrawing settlers from Gaza may be seen by Palestinians as their loss, “judging from their efforts to jeopardize it,” but the pull-out is an important step which defies that judgement, he said.“How could the dismantling of Israeli settlements in occupied Palestinian territory the first ever – be anything but a gain for the Palestinian side,” Mr. de Soto said, given that it offers a tangible improvement in the daily lives of Palestinians and a return to the Road Map for peace supported by the Quartet – the United Nations, United States, European Union and Russian Federation. He noted that Israel is determined to proceed with disengagement despite the activities of Israeli extremists and he welcomed the Palestinian Authority (PA) President Mahmoud Abbas’ forceful address to his people late last week.“Hope was also provided by the report only two days ago that the ceasefire has been renewed and that the Palestinian factions are committed to end internal fighting,” Mr. de Soto said.Israel can and should do more to support the PA in countering militancy and extremism and should take the initiative in meeting its side of the parallel obligations under the Road Map, dismantling all settlements built since March 2001, while the PA must continue to exert control and authority, he said. read more

“Today, at a time of escalating conflicts, rising extremism, massive displacement and rapidly growing humanitarian need, Mahatma Gandhi’s dedication to non-violence remains an example for us all,” Mr. Ban said at a special event held at UN Headquarters to mark the International Day of Non-Violence. “The Day is observed annually on 2 October, the birthday of Mr. Gandhi, who pioneered the philosophy and strategy of non-violence. “Gandhi proved that non-violence – the principle and the practice – can change history,” Mr. Ban noted. “His mass campaigns of non-violent civil disobedience helped pave the way for the independence of India, and have inspired countless movements for change across the world.” “During an official visit to India in January, the UN chief visited Sabarmati Ashram, which houses a library and museum chronicling Gandhi’s life, work and teachings. “We will succeed only if the memory of Gandhi’s unyielding fight against injustice burns bright in our hearts and we defend his ideals every day of the year,” he had said on the occasion. “In a separate message for the International Day, the Secretary-General added: “Gandhi showed the power of peacefully opposing oppression and hatred. He showed how cooperation and tolerance can prevails over injustice. He demonstrated the great value of the rule of law in breaking vicious cycles of vengeance.” “The General Assembly established the commemoration of the Day in June 2007 as an occasion to “disseminate the message of non-violence, including through education and public awareness.” read more

Welcome To The 2018 World Series Where Even SalevsKershaw Turns Into A

BOSTON — Tuesday night was billed as one of the greatest pitching matchups in World Series history: Clayton Kershaw versus Chris Sale — two of the elite starters of their generation. On a cool night in Boston, a sold-out Fenway Park was well-aware of the pedigree of its foe and greeted the Los Angeles Dodgers ace with chants of “Ker-Shaaawww, Ker-Shaaawww,” drawing out the last syllable of his surname as he pitched. But the lyrical taunting was short-lived as Kershaw didn’t make it far into Game 1 — and neither did Sale, for that matter. We didn’t get a classic pitching duel. Instead, we received a heavy dose of 2018 baseball. And that style of play — namely bullpenning — favored the Red Sox en route to an 8-4, series-opening victory.Six Red Sox relievers combined to allow just one run over five innings, and Boston pinch-hitter Eduardo Nunez broke the game open with a three-run homer off Dodger reliever Alex Wood in the seventh inning. That both of the starting pitchers lasted only four innings is telling of how quickly the game is changing. Tuesday marked just the fourth Game 1 — the game that often features a pair of aces — in World Series history in which neither starting pitcher recorded an out in the fifth inning. In the three previous occasions — in 1923, 1966 and 2004 — all but one of the starters allowed as many or more runs as Sale or Kershaw did in fewer innings prior to departing.1And that other starter — Baltimore’s Dave McNally in 1966 — had walked the bases loaded in the third inning before getting the hook. In other words, those starters had been battered. That wasn’t the case Tuesday. Instead, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts and Red Sox manager Alex Cora had their aces on short leashes.Teams have become aware of how performance typically declines the deeper a starter pitches into a game, and teams are also eager to try to gain righty/lefty platoon advantages when they can find them in the later innings. Teams also monitor fatigue, and Sale was somewhat taxed in throwing 91 pitches.During the 232-minute game Tuesday, the two clubs combined to use 12 pitchers, who threw a total of 308 pitches. Through Tuesday, relievers have accounted for 50.5 percent of innings this postseason, which would be a record. That mark is up 4 percentage points from last postseason (46.5 percent) and significantly from the 2010 playoffs (32.3 percent). While bullpens have taken on more and more work in the regular season, their usage and importance in the postseason is reaching unprecedented levels.Dodger infielder Brian Dozier said “anything goes” in the World Series. But the urgent, anything-goes practices employed Tuesday were carryovers from the regular season. In fact, the Dodgers have already faced the most extreme form of pitching game strategy this postseason. While some traditionalists have bemoaned the move toward bullpens, Red Sox reliever and Game 1 winner Matt Barnes told FiveThirtyEight in a cramped postgame clubhouse that he is all for this style of play.“I’m about whatever it takes to get wins in the World Series,” Barnes said. “How you do it? It doesn’t matter to me. You just have to win 11 games before anyone else does.”Cora began the Red Sox parade of relievers in the top of the fifth when he summoned Barnes out of the right-field bullpen to replace Sale, who had walked the lead-off batter, Dozier. Barnes, who has become a trusted setup man, allowed a single to Justin Turner, and Dozier later scored on a Manny Machado groundout to tie the score at 3.Kershaw entered the game with questions about his postseason performances and left with a career ERA of 4.28 in 145 postseason innings. He also continues to suffer from declining fastball velocity, as the pitch sat between 90 and 91 mph Tuesday. He relied heavily on his breaking pitches. Only CC Sabathia owns a worse ERA among pitchers who have made at least 15 postseason starts. While Kershaw was hit hard at times on Tuesday — including a 105.9 mph single and a 109.1 mph double off the bat of J.D. Martinez — he wasn’t helped by his surrounding cast, either. L.A.’s starting first baseman, David Freese, failed to catch a foul pop-up in the first inning. It wasn’t ruled an error but was a play that could have been made — and it might have cost the Dodgers two runs.Kershaw allowed three runs through four innings. After walking Mookie Betts and allowing a single to Andrew Benintendi to begin the fifth, he was was pulled from the game. Roberts called on Ryan Madson, who allowed both inherited runners to score to give the Red Sox a 5-3 lead.More innings pitched by relievers requires lineups to remain flexible as offenses try to counter the platoon advantage gained by switching the handedness of pitchers. For instance, the Brewers had left-handed starter Wade Miley throw just five pitches in a start in Game 5 of the National League Championship Series before going to a right-handed-heavy cast of relievers against the platoon-heavy Dodgers. And on Tuesday, five of the six relievers that followed the lefty Sale were right-handed.In response to pitching strategies, Dozier joked Monday that the Dodgers have begun to pull hockey-style line changes in games. Los Angeles was the first club in World Series history to start nine right-handed batters with no switch-hitters. But by the seventh inning Tuesday, three L.A. lefties and a switch-hitter had joined the game, and only three Dodgers were playing positions they had occupied on the starting lineup card: Turner (third base), Machado (shortstop) and Yasiel Puig (right field). While the two managers traded chess pieces, it was Cora who seemed to win the most strategic battles, as he has done all October. He struck a decisive blow on Tuesday by pinch-hitting Nunez for left-handed hitter Rafael Devers when Roberts called the left-handed Wood into the game in the seventh.“Cora is prepared,” Barnes said. “Tonight is another example, pinch-hitting (Nunez). It’s a lot of fun playing for him. He knows exactly what he’s doing.”The Red Sox have won 116 games under Cora this season, a year in which the game seems to be changing so quickly. They are now three wins from a fourth championship this century.Check out our latest MLB predictions. read more

Heres how much your county manager earned between 2008 and 2011

first_imgTHE COUNTY MANAGERS of 34 local authorities in Ireland made a combined €4.6 million per year up until the end of 2009.The figures are laid out in a parliamentary question submitted by independent TD Stephen Donnelly, which shows that up until January 2010, the head of Dublin City Council was paid €202,461.In keeping with public sector pay cuts, all county managers took cuts at the start of 2010.This move saw the salary in Dublin City cut to €189,000 and the pay in Cork County, Fingal and South Dublin cut from €171,000 to €162,000.The County or City Manager performs the executive functions of the County or City Council.Appointed through the Public Appointments System, he or she supervises, co-ordinates, manages and pays the employees and officers of the council. He or she also makes contracts on behalf of the council and affixes the official seal of the council on documents. They generally have seven-year terms. From 1 June, the title changed to Chief Executive and there are now just 31 local authorities. In his response to Donnelly’s question, Environment Minister Phil Hogan outlined the other allowances paid to CEOs.“County and City Managers, Local Authority Chief Executive Officers (CEOs), formally are entitled to claim for travel and subsistence costs incurred as part of their official duties, in accordance with the relevant travel and subsistence circulars. All local authorities are obliged to ensure that only essential travel is undertaken and that related expenditure is critically appraised and monitored. A CEO may claim up to 7.5% of their salary in substitution of motor mileage rates contained in the travel and subsistence circulars, where a local authority considers that those allowances do not adequately recompense the CEO for the extent to which their car is used for official business. The response added that CEOs are paid between €2,095 and €6,858 in allowances for entertainment every year.Read: Retiring town councillors will be paid around €4.6 millionlast_img read more

The OVO4 takes home flight simulation to a new level

first_imgIn October last year I reported on what had to be the ultimate in home flight simulation. It was a custom build consisting of 6 displays, realistic cockpit controls and a seat straight out of a real plane. The only thing it didn’t do was simulate movement, but I don’t think that would really break the feeling of realism.Today, I may have found a successor to the custom build. It doesn’t use as many displays, but it does fully enclose the player in an egg-shaped cockpit, and most importantly, it moves, meaning that decent to the runway will feel all the more real. The OVO-04 is made by Virtual Fly who advertise it as a plug&play flight simulator that is very quiet and free of the need for a keyboard and mouse inside. It even has the PC shipped with it as a separate module containing the FSX software required to make it function.Serious flight simulation fans are most likely drooling right about now. Inside you’ll find 3 24-inch widescreen displays above an array of cockpit controls, instruments, and pedals. As it’s an enclosed unit, the integrated speaker system should make for a realistic sound experience too. It even has a light intensity system to match the lighting inside the cockpit with the time of day or night you are flying. The OVO-4 ships with Microsoft Flight Simulator X, so we assume its going to work with other flight simulation software too because it must be running Windows. If you want one, you had better start saving. The OVO-04 is listed for pre-order in the UK at Firebox for £35,995. That’s around $57,500, or $46,000 before sales tax. Yes, it’s a lot, but if you go home every night and sit playing on a flight sim for hours, it might actually be worth the investment, right?More at Virtual Fly, via Thinqlast_img read more

Microsoft Worldwide Telescope brings the universe to your computer

first_imgMicrosoft doesn’t get a lot of credit for being innovative, but its Microsoft Research lab actually develops a ton of awesome technology. Of particular interest to readers of Geek, is sure to be the Worldwide Telescope project, which Microsoft is undertaking with the help of telescopes all around the world, and even orbiting it. New content is added frequently, most recently data from NASA’s Planck mission. If you’ve never taken a look at this project, now is a great time. The Worldwide Telescope is an effort to construct a massive map of the universe. Microsoft Research has assembled astronomical data from scientists all over the world to build a 3D model that users can actually fly through. NASA’s Hubble Images are used liberally, and Microsoft hopes to incorporate data from the James Webb Telescope when it launches in a few years. You’ll be able to do flybys of any star, nebula, or planet astronomers have gathered data on.This is more than just a bunch of pretty images, though. There is real data backing this simulation that makes it useful from the elementary school level, all the way up to graduate studies. It has support for visible light, but also X-ray and infrared observations.Microsoft Research has also built The Worldwide Telescope with touch interactions in mind. Desktop mouse controls aren’t forgotten, but pinch-zooming is being held up as the best way to use the maps. The product is currently limited to desktops, but a mobile version is expected soon.Microsoft has created an API that will allow developers and educators to build custom “stellar tours” entirely within The Worldwide Telescope. It can run in a web browser on PC or Mac, but Silverlight is required. There is also a Windows client that can be installed. Maybe not ideal for everyone, but you can’t argue with a free trip across the universe.last_img read more

Greeces unemployment rises to 207 per cent

first_imgGreece’s jobless rate rose to a fresh quarterly record of 20.7 percent in the last three months of 2012, reflecting the country’s deep economic malaise, exacerbated by austerity to repair public finances and emerge from a debt crisis. Greece secured a new 130 billion euro bailout from its euro zone partners and the IMF this week, after agreeing further painful budget cuts. But the labour market’s sharp deterioration is feeding public discontent and hurting consumer confidence. On Thursday, statistics agency ELSTAT data showed jobs being shed at a fast pace as unemployment rose from 17.7 percent in the third quarter and 14.2 percent in the last quarter of 2010.“The quarterly unemployment data reflect the deepening pace of the domestic economic contraction. Considering that unemployment is a lagging indicator, we should not rule out a further rise in the jobless rate in the months ahead,» said EFG Eurobank economist Platon Monokroussos. Young people have been hardest hit by the country’s protracted economic recession. Almost four in ten people in the 15-to-29 age group were out of work, data showed, up from 28 percent in the same period a year earlier. One of the worst affected economic sectors is construction, where employment dropped 19 percent year-on-year. Greece’s 215 billion euro economy slumped by 7 percent in 2011 and is projected to remain in recession for a fifth consecutive year in 2012. The economic downturn is making it harder for the government to meet revenue targets and cut the budget gap, raising the risk that further belt-tightening may be necessary.“It will be difficult to stabilise the trend in the first half of 2012. The main hopes for a slowdown in the trend rest on the summer months when there may be an improved picture because of tourism and exports,» said National Bank economist Nikos Magginas. ELSTAT said the number officially unemployed reached 1,025,877 in the fourth quarter, an increase of 44.1 percent year-on-year and of 16.8 percent from the third quarter. Greece’s December unemployment rate was almost double the 17-country euro zone’s seasonally adjusted average of 10.6 percent, but is still lower than 22.9 percent seen in Spain in the fourth quarter. Greek unemployment figures are not seasonally adjusted.Source: Reuters Facebook Twitter: @NeosKosmos Instagramlast_img read more

Medina – September 14, 2019 Borussia Dortmund winger Jadon Sancho might be the perfect player to play for the Gunners, according to former England international Paul Merson.“We weren’t at our best today and it wasn’t easy to turn the game around. After trailing 1-0, we scored but it wasn’t given and we kept going. We scored twice and won.”“If I’m honest, playing like we did and winning is far better than playing well and losing. At this stage of the season, it’s crucial. It means a lot for our confidence. I hope we can push on.”“I was happy once more yesterday. I hope I keep smiling but football is a team sport. Federal authorities destroy more than 460 guns at Cancun military base

first_imgCancún, Q.R. — More than 460 guns were destroyed by federal authorities in Cancun Wednesday as part of a government clean to rid criminals of their weapons.Cancun mayor, Remberto Estrada Barba, says that part of the problem is the amount of weapons in the hands of criminals. He described the event to destroy the guns as “very significant” saying that the weapons being removed from the streets around the state has an impact on violence since six out of every 10 homicides are committed with guns.“The law is very clear, he explains, “There are restrictions on owning a weapon. The unfortunate thing is that all these weapons circulate in the black market. There are even cases where high caliber guns have been confiscated from minors.”He explained that while it is good to remove as many weapons from the streets as possible, we must also remove them from the hands of criminals and prevent them from reaching children.Estrada Barba congratulated the judicial and ministerial authorities for putting an effort into the issue of weapons in the state pending the new justice system. In total, 467 weapons that included guns, an excess of 3,300 rounds of ammunition and two silencers were destroyed along with pieces of military clothing and gear used by criminals. The destruction of the weapons was done by the Secretariat of National Defense at the X Military Region in Cancun.General Gustavo Nieto Navarro, commander of the X Military Region, said that citizens can also voluntarily surrender their weapons as part of the Weapons Exchange Program where they are awarded with incentives.“The implementation of the Weapons Exchange Program is intended to promote the voluntary surrender of firearms, grenades and ammunition among citizens in exchange for incentives such as articles for domestic use.“The goal of the program is to diminish tragic and violent acts within the family or community nucleus through a permanent campaign.”He stressed that all weapons seized by the civil authorities are made available to the Secretariat of National Defense and all are destroyed.Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)Click to share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)last_img read more

first_imgBritish Airways first Airbus 350 touches down at London HeathrowBritish Airways first Airbus 350 touches down at London HeathrowBritish Airways’ first Airbus 350, registration G-XWBA, touched down at London Heathrow this weekend, featuring the airline’s newest generation business class seat, Club Suite. The airline will take delivery of 18 A350s, with four of the new aircraft joining the fleet before the end of the year.Carolina Martinoli, British Airways’ Director of Brand and Customer Experience said: “We are delighted to welcome the first of our A350s to the fleet. This aircraft marks a significant and exciting milestone in our £6.5 billion investment programme and is even more special as it comes with our new Club Suite. The A350 is a fantastic aircraft and an excellent showpiece for British engineering. Our customers are going to love the space, light and comfort on board.”The newly-branded ‘Club Suite’ offers direct-aisle access, a suite door for greater privacy and luxurious flat-bed seats in a 1-2-1 configuration. Boasting 40 per cent more storage, including a vanity unit and mirror, WiFi, enviable 18.5-inch inflight entertainment screens, high definition gate-to-gate programming, and PC / USB power; every aspect of British Airways’ Club Suite has been designed for today’s customer. The A350 promotes a feeling of well-being, space and calm due to its reduced noise levels, high ceilings and ambient lighting which is intended to compliment the time of day and outside light. Customers will leave their flight feeling rested thanks to higher levels of humidity and refreshed air as the cabin pressure is equivalent to an altitude of just 6,000 feet. There are also environmental benefits to flying on the state-of the-art A350 as 25 per cent lower fuel burn significantly reduces CO2 emissions. As well as a new 56-seat Club World cabin, the three-cabin A350 features the latest World Traveller Plus cabin (56 seats) with new furnishings including a plush new pillow and warm quilt, new amenity kits and an enhanced service and an improved dining experience. The World Traveller (economy) cabin offers 219 seats. Customers will also benefit from high-speed WiFi, allowing travellers to browse the internet on their personal electronic devices. In a world first, the airline mapped out their new Club Suite and A350 in lasers within the British Airways Laserdrome, a 100 square metre structure, towering 6 and a half metres high.During phase one in August, the first A350 aircraft will start some short-haul flying between London and Madrid to allow the airline’s teams to perfect their customer service delivery and familiarise cabin crew with the aircraft layout. In phase two, which starts during September, the aircraft will begin long-haul flying to Dubai, followed by services to Toronto, Tel Aviv and Bangalore this year. During this period another three A350 aircraft will join the British Airways fleet and two Boeing 777 aircraft will also be retrofitted with the new cabin. At the start of 2020 phase three will begin which will see British Airways rolling out its Club Suite on further long-haul aircraft across the network. The arrival of the A350 is part of the airline’s £6.5bn current investment programme and forms part of an exciting year for the airline as it celebrates its centenary. Other activity includes the airline’s BA 2119 programme exploring the future of fuels, the customer experience of the future and the aviation careers in the next 100 years. Rep Lucido testifies on bill which will allow electronic proof of car

first_img Categories: Lucido News,Lucido Photos,News,Photos 16Feb Rep. Lucido testifies on bill which will allow electronic proof of car registration State Rep. Peter Lucido of Shelby Township testified before the House Insurance Committee today in support of his legislation to allow for electronic proof of registration. If approved, his bill would allow vehicle drivers to share either paper or electronic proof of annual registration from the Michigan Secretary of State during interactions with law enforcement during traffic stops.“This is another method to help both taxpayers and police officers,” Lucido said. “If a lawful driver can be prevented from getting a citation, simply because of a misplaced registration form, than it’s easier for all involved.”House Bill 4013 was not voted on during today’s meeting.###last_img read more

Rep Hoitenga proposal makes practical changes to 911 emergency mandates

first_img Signed law exempts certain entities from expensive phone system updatesA plan from state Rep. Michele Hoitenga removing burdensome regulations for job providers has been signed by the governor.House Bill 4249, now Public Act 30 of 2019, addresses multiline telephone systems and eases previous upgrades mandated by the Michigan Public Service Commission. The upgraded networks consist of multiple telephone lines that are mediated by a centralized system that not only allows multiple telephones to place and receive calls at one time, but also allows emergency services to track the room or floor that the emergency call came from- an advantage that is largely irrelevant for many facilities and small businesses.“It’s very important to have the best technology possible in place wherever we can for our brave first responders so they can effectively respond to emergencies, but we also need a solidified middle ground to ensure local job providers and other facilities that help make up our communities are not hurt by overregulation,” said Hoitenga, of Manton, who chairs the House Communications and Technology Committee. “There was no delineation in these requirements. It was a uniform mandate with an expensive tab for those upgrading systems. This is a more practical, case-by-case approach that doesn’t simply wrap businesses in our state – whether they are large and small – up in red tape.”Businesses and entities were facing a Dec. 31 deadline to update their systems based on suggestions by the Michigan Public Services Commission. Failing to upgrade would have resulted in fines ranging from $500-5,000. Hoitenga’s plan provides some common-sense flexibility rather than relying on an ineffective, one-size-fits-all approach to regulation. Certain small businesses, farms, and houses of worship are exempted from the requirement in the new law.The National Federation of Independent Business has estimated that installation and maintenance costs for the updated systems would be steep for an average small business. The Archdiocese of Detroit has said that initial compliance costs could be as high as $2 million for its facilities, including one location that was quoted at $22,000. Estimates for system upgrades for some small businesses have been placed as high as $10,000.The plan was previously approved in overwhelming fashion in the Michigan House and unanimously in the Senate before reaching the governor’s desk. Dennis Rodman in Pyongyang but Unwilling to Help Imprisoned Kenneth Bae

first_imgShareTweetShareEmail0 Shares dossyl / Shutterstock.comDecember 19, 2013; CNNDennis Rodman may have been the greatest rebounder ever to play in the National Basketball Association, but his deepening friendship with North Korea’s Kim Jong Un is troubling. Rodman is back in Pyongyang again to train North Korean basketball players for a game against some unnamed former NBA stars.  The game will be on January 8th, in honor of Kim’s birthday.Rodman isn’t in North Korea on a humanitarian mission; he is being sponsored by Paddy Power, an online sports betting firm based in Ireland. It’s not clear what is in this for Paddy Power, given the unlikelihood that many North Koreans will be placing bets today on the Chicago Bulls versus the Oklahoma City Thunder in basketball or Phil Taylor versus Michael Smith in darts. This isn’t Rodman’s first trip to North Korea, having stopped in to visit Kim twice before, calling Kim “a friend for life.” A Paddy Power spokesman for Rodman says that this trip, and apparently the upcoming basketball game, will “prove once again that sport has the power to rise above all issues.”That doesn’t do much for Kim’s uncle, Jang Song Thaek, who was the nation’s second most powerful figure and seen as a mentor for Kim, but was executed by his mentee’s government last week, accused of trying to overthrow Kim Jong Un’s government. In a similar vein, Rodman’s laughing it up with the North Korean dictator is not particularly funny for the more than 200,000 people in North Korea’s gulag of labor camps.Rodman’s visit also lacks humor for the family of Kenneth Bae, a Korean-American who was arrested just over a year ago and sentenced to 15 years of hard labor for allegedly trying to overthrow the North Korean government for religious activities. Rodman’s position on Bae has changed as his friendship with Kim has deepened. Earlier this year, he asked Kim to “do him a solid” and free Bae, but during his visit to Pyongyang this past September, Rodman told the press that he wasn’t there to talk about Bae, adding, “Ask Obama about that, ask Hillary Clinton about that, ask those assholes.”Bae is the longest-serving American prisoner of North Korea since the end of the Korean War. According to his mother, who got to visit him briefly in October, Bae’s health is deteriorating, with diabetes, an enlarged heart, and gallstones. Perhaps it is because Bae’s work as a Christian missionary is somewhat uncommon and unfamiliar to many Americans that his imprisonment doesn’t get much attention except when the former Chicago Bulls player shows up in the DPRK. But one doesn’t have to be a Christian, much less a missionary, to know that North Korea could and should release this man back to his family. Vice President Joe Biden recently called on the Kim regime to let Bae return to his family, but the North Korean government has not relented.Rodman’s conception of sports rising above all issues would be more persuasive if the rebounder would lift Bae out of his imprisonment.—Rick CohenShareTweetShareEmail0 Shareslast_img read more

Canadian Activists and Celebrities Issue Manifesto for a Green Canada

first_imgShare4TweetShare13Email17 SharesSeptember 15, 2015; The GuardianEver since SCTV introduced Americans to John Candy, Harold Ramis, Eugene Levy, Catherine O’Hara, Rick Moranis, Martin Short, and Andrea Martin, among others, Canada has had a reputation for constant innovation. The latest, in the realm of promoting a sustainable energy economy, is the release of the Leap Manifesto: A Call for a Canada Based on Caring for the Earth and One Another. An abridged version of the text of the full Manifesto is on the Common Dreams website with the bylines of Naomi Klein, the brilliant activist who authored No Logo and This Changes Everything: Capitalism vs. the Climate; actress Ellen Page; actor Donald Sutherland; singer/songwriter Leonard Cohen; and environmental scientist David Suzuki. Other initiating signatories of the Manifesto include singer Neil Young, actress Sarah Polley, singer Alanis Morissette, actress Rachel McAdams, actress Pamela Anderson, and author Michael Ondaatje. The prime mover behind the Manifesto is the indefatigable Klein, who explained why a document ostensibly targeting fossil fuels would be so broad as to include calls for increasing income taxes on corporations and the wealthy and cutting military spending. “Small steps won’t get us there. We have to move on multiple fronts at once,” Klein said. “My crisis isn’t bigger than your crisis. They’re interconnected, they’re overlapping and we can come up with solutions that solve multiple problems at once.”Noteworthy is that the first clear recommendation of the Manifesto addresses a concern that isn’t explicitly limited to environmental or energy concerns (boldfacing from original text):This leap must begin by respecting the inherent rights and title of the original caretakers of this land. Indigenous communities have been at the forefront of protecting rivers, coasts, forests and lands from out-of-control industrial activity. We can bolster this role, and reset our relationship, by fully implementing the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. Some of the Manifesto is pure common sense, but presented in a way that makes a reader realize the inherent logic: “The new iron law of energy development must be: if you wouldn’t want it in your backyard, then it doesn’t belong in anyone’s backyard.”As befits a document generated with the touch of Naomi Klein, there is tough content addressing the limitations of the for-profit sector:As an alternative to the profit-gouging of private companies and the remote bureaucracy of some centralized state ones, we can create innovative ownership structures: democratically run, paying living wages and keeping much-needed revenue in communities. And Indigenous Peoples should be first to receive public support for their own clean energy projects. So should communities currently dealing with heavy health impacts of polluting industrial activity. After identifying a variety of green energy actions that Canada could and should take, the Manifesto puts the issue into national and international multisectoral contexts:We call for an end to all trade deals that interfere with our attempts to rebuild local economies, regulate corporations and stop damaging extractive projects. Rebalancing the scales of justice, we should ensure immigration status and full protection for all workers. Recognizing Canada’s contributions to military conflicts and climate change—primary drivers of the global refugee crisis—we must welcome refugees and migrants seeking safety and a better life.Shifting to an economy in balance with the earth’s limits also means expanding the sectors of our economy that are already low carbon: caregiving, teaching, social work, the arts and public-interest media…Since so much of the labour of caretaking—whether of people or the planet—is currently unpaid, we call for a vigorous debate about the introduction of a universal basic annual income. Pioneered in Manitoba in the 1970’s, this sturdy safety net could help ensure that no one is forced to take work that threatens their children’s tomorrow, just to feed those children today. We declare that ‘austerity’—which has systematically attacked low-carbon sectors like education and healthcare, while starving public transit and forcing reckless energy privatizations—is a fossilized form of thinking that has become a threat to life on earth.A logical reaction to this document might be that it is but one of a number of documents that celebrities sign on to, likely to generate little but some positive press for the stars’ social consciousness. Maybe, but the celebs listed as initiating signatories on the Manifesto are well known as far more than endorsers of social-cause-of-the-month efforts. Many are strong and consistent activists in the environmental and political arenas. Plus, the very strong language on the Canadian corporate sector would seem to put the celebrity signatories at odds with some significant political and economic powers in the nation, a difficult position to back down from for these prominent people.Just as significant is that these activists issued the Manifesto in the midst of a national election campaign, basically standing apart from the major parties to set a standard against which all of them could be judged. Therefore, the Manifesto can’t be seen as a tool serving the purposes of one of the three major political parties (Stephen Harper’s Conservative Party, Justin Trudeau’s Liberal Party, and Tom Mulcair’s New Democratic Party), especially since the recommendations of the document on trade and some energy issues are even to the left of the recently moderating NDP’ers. These activists have laid down a challenge to the dominant political parties, which it would seem all of them fail to meet to some degree. Finally, one of the distinct elements of the Manifesto is not just the collection of individual signatories, but the organizational ones. In addition to nonprofit endorsers such as Greenpeace Canada, the Sierra Club Canada, and Black Lives Matter – Toronto, there are labor union endorsements from the Toronto York Region Labour Council, the Canadian Union of Postal Workers, and the Public Service Alliance of Canada. Environmental and energy activists in the U.S. have to acknowledge that they have to confront the often strident and short-term thinking of labor unions here that seem committed to energy projects, even those of the dirtiest carbon emitters such as coal and other extractive industries, because of the jobs at stake. The Manifesto makes it clear that these environmental and energy activists are committed not just to making a green Canada, but working on the transitional issues that will keep Canadians employed and secure. The glaring shortcoming is the missing names on the signatories list. With John Candy’s passing, we won’t be able to see Johnny LaRue standing up for the Manifesto, but we would hope that Guy Caballero, Earl Camembert, and Bob and Doug McKenzie sign on. That’s not to make the Manifesto a joke, but to recognize the diverse array of creative Canadians who like Naomi Klein recognize Canada’s need and capacity for creating a society that is powered by “truly just renewable energy”. –Rick CohenShare4TweetShare13Email17 Shareslast_img read more

Sanctuary Cities Recommit Despite Vows of Federal Defunding under Trump Students Demand

first_imgShare13TweetShare3Email16 SharesNovember 15, 2016; Washington Post, Associated Press, and ObserverIn the face of President-elect Donald Trump’s vow to “end the sanctuary cities,” New York’s Bill de Blasio, Chicago’s Rahm Emanuel, Seattle’s Ed Murray, and Chelsea’s city manager Thomas Ambrosino are among sanctuary city leaders assuring their undocumented immigrant populations they will do whatever they can to protect them. The Observer reports that Mayor de Blasio is also pledging to resist Trump’s proposal to implement the use of stop-and-frisk nationwide. (New York City’s implementation was ruled unconstitutional by a federal judge in 2013.) These cities are willing to forego federal funding to uphold their values.“Seattle has always been a welcoming city,” Murray said Monday. “The last thing I want is for us to start turning on our neighbors.” In Providence, Rhode Island, Mayor Jorge Elorza, the son of Guatemalan immigrants, said he’d continue a longstanding city policy of refusing to hold people charged with civil infractions for federal immigration officials, and Newark’s Ras Baraka echoed that, calling Trump’s rhetoric on immigration “scary.”Bill Ong Hing, a law professor at the University of San Francisco School of Law, explains why “sanctuary policies” and are constitutional and why it is permitted for states and cities to defy federal law.The central teaching of the Tenth Amendment cases is that even where Congress has the authority under the Constitution to pass laws requiring or prohibiting certain acts, it lacks the power directly to compel the states to require or prohibit those acts. Congress may not, therefore, directly compel states or localities to enact or to administer policies or programs adopted by the federal government.According to the Center for Immigration Studies, which considers sanctuary cities to be a public safety problem, there are about 300 sanctuary jurisdictions in the U.S. CIS asserts that police are forced to return criminals to their communities. Pro-immigration advocates contend that Trump’s sweeping immigration policies will cause worse harm, that they will “tear communities apart.” There are no easy solutions. What is clear is that many local officials will uphold their promise of “sanctuary.”The Washington Post reports that these city leaders are not alone. “Thousands of students, professors, alumni and others at elite schools including Harvard, Yale and Brown have signed petitions asking universities to protect undocumented students.” It is not clear how many undocumented immigrants are currently attending U.S. colleges and of those how many are protected by the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) initiative. “Sanctuary colleges” is a new and untested concept. Nevertheless, the Harvard Crimson reported on Monday that 4,000 people signed a petition calling upon Harvard’s administration to protect the University’s undocumented students. The article quotes the students as saying that they were disappointed that while anti-Trump demonstrations were occurring on campuses across the country, Harvard had yet to have one. The students said that their demonstration was this petition because it was more tangible than symbolic.“We do not need words of comfort, your pity, or your sympathy,” the petition reads. “We need action that demonstrates this University’s dedication to concretely support all of its students, regardless of their immigration status.”A Harvard spokesperson reminded the students that President Drew Faust was an early DACA supporter and that she and the school were “following developments in Washington closely and will be engaged in these core issues.”Also on Monday, the Yale Daily News reported that since the election more than 2,300 students and faculty members had signed a letter asking the Yale administration to declare the campus a sanctuary for undocumented immigrants.Dozens of schools are joining this college sanctuary movement. Here is the petition circulating at Columbia University. Pomona publicly advertises itself as welcoming to undocumented students.Today, Wednesday, between 3 and 6 PM, a nationwide walkout is planned on many American campuses. This protest is inspired by the hashtag #SanctuaryCampus, created by the undocumented workers’ pressure group Movimiento Cosecha. Participating schools are “committing to putting [their] bodies between Trump and our most vulnerable students.”—James SchafferNote: Donald Trump is the father-in-law of Jared Kushner, the publisher of Observer Media, which is one of the sources referenced for this newswire. Kushner himself is the subject of some controversy, as he’s been added to the Trump transition team and allegedly been submitted for a top-secret clearance.Share13TweetShare3Email16 Shareslast_img read more

first_imgShareTweet Det Supt Ryan Henderson of the PSNI’s Public Protection Branch launch its Christmas domestic abuse campaignTHE PSNI has launched its annual domestic abuse Christmas campaign and its message to victims across Derry is clear: Don’t suffer in silence.Scheduled to run until mid-January, the aim of the campaign is to encourage the reporting of incidents and show victims they can take steps to stop it. “Unfortunately, however, we know over the Christmas period incidents of domestic abuse rise and when we look at the figures from last year’s campaign, which ran from 15 December until 16 January.“The highest level of incidents reported to police was on New Year’s Day when we received a total of 142 calls for help compared to 147 the previous year. “On Christmas Day 2017, there were 84 incidents reported to us compared to 96 from the previous year.“Looking at the overall statistics from 1 October 2017 until 30 September 2018 there were 31,008 domestic abuse incidents recorded; an increase of 1,582 (5.4 per cent) on the previous 12 months. “The figures are the highest of any 12-month period since PSNI started recording data in 2004/05.“These stark figures tell us more victims are finding the courage to pick up the phone and make a report, which is encouraging, but we must always remember behind each statistic is a victim. “What is also alarming is that we respond to an incident of domestic abuse every 17 minutes. “Unfortunately, many incidents of domestic abuse still go un-reported, but we hope this campaign will go some way towards changing that and will encourage anyone impacted by domestic abuse to report it to us. “Domestic abuse is a terrifying crime, which can have a long lasting impact and it can affect anyone, and often leaves victims feeling isolated and alone. “Our role is about prevention, protection and prosecution; to prevent further violence, to protect the victim, children and other vulnerable people and to facilitate the prosecution of offenders. We want anyone impacted by domestic abuse to know there is help out there.”In March of this year, the Department of Justice launched a new scheme – The Domestic Violence and Abuse Disclosure Scheme (DVADS) – aimed at helping to protect people from becoming a victim of domestic violence or abuse. It allows a person to make enquiries confidentially to police when they have concerns their partner has a history of abusive behaviour. This allows them to make an informed choice about an existing personal relationship. An application can also be made by a third party who knows them and has concerns.Since the introduction of the scheme on 26th March until 30 November, there were 177 applications submitted. Ten disclosures were made. Detective Superintendent Henderson from the Public Protection Branch said: “Previously, it would have been difficult for someone entering a new relationship to find out, or be aware if their new partner had any prior convictions for violence ordomestic abuse. “This scheme makes it possible for people to take that extra step if they are concerned to do what they can to protect themselves. “I want to encourage anyone suffering from domestic abuse to call their local police on the non-emergency 101 or, in an emergency, always call 999.“A 24-hour Domestic and Sexual Violence Helpline is available to anyone who has concerns about domestic or sexual violence, now or in the past on 0808 802 1414.”Additional information:Please see below link to report: Domestic Abuse Incidents and Crimes Recorded by the Police in Northern Ireland: Quarterly Update to 30 September 2018 (Published 29 November 2018)https://www.psni.police.uk/globalassets/inside-the-psni/our-statistics/domestic-abuse-statistics/2018-19/q2/_domestic-abuse-bulletin-sep-18.pdfVictims of domestic violence urged not to ‘suffer in silence’ this festive season was last modified: December 13th, 2018 by John2John2 Tags: DET SUPT RYAN HENDERSONdomestic abusePSNIPUBLIC PROTECTION BRANCHVictims of domestic violence urged not to ‘suffer in silence’ this festive season The campaign’s message is ‘If you feel like you’re walking on eggshells that’s domestic abuse’. 225 years ago a rather prescient James Madison wr

first_img225 years ago, a rather prescient James Madison wrote: “I believe there are more instances of the abridgement of the freedom of the people by gradual and silent encroachments of those in power than by violent and sudden usurpations.” Today, the encroachments against which he warned have become the rule rather than the exception, as cyberspying has afforded governments unprecedented means to gain control over their own citizens. It’s been a long and twisted path from the likes of Madison to Richard Nixon, who once famously said, “When the president does it, that means that it is not illegal.” For that, he was rightly vilified. Yet if the four decades since he passed from the scene have taught us anything, it’s that vast armies of government officials have come believe that whatever they do is legal. The fourth and fifth amendments to the Constitution are violated so routinely that few people bother to notice, and an entire generation has grown up without knowing why they were written into the document and what they mean—or even that they exist at all. The revelations from the Edward Snowden-orchestrated document leaks have been coming fast and furious for several months now. Each day, it seems, we learn about another government program we hadn’t heard of before. And yet, we are complicit. Each day we also enable our own surveillance. In early 2011, more than two years before Snowden surfaced, the humor website The Onion ran a spoof video about the supposed reauthorization of funding for Facebook by Congress, because it saves the intelligence community so much money. This quote purports to come from a deputy CIA director lauding Facebook: “After years of secretly monitoring the public, we were astounded so many people would willingly publicize where they lived, their religious and political views, an alphabetized list of all their friends, personal email addresses, phone numbers, hundreds of photos of themselves, and even status updates of what they were doing moment to moment. It is truly a dream come true for the CIA.” It’s hilarious but, like all good satire, it’s a little painful to watch, as well. Imagine, for example, that the government had demanded at gunpoint that we turn over all of the personal info we voluntarily post about ourselves. There’d be outrage. High-horse Congresspersons would hold hearings. Scathing op-ed pieces would appear. Luckily for the government, however, it doesn’t even have to ask. All that stuff is out there in cyberspace, almost begging to be harvested. Who can blame the authorities for taking advantage? In a sense, the same applies to our personal correspondence. At one time, opening someone else’s mail was a serious federal crime—it still is, actually. But email? We agree to let our server archive our e-letters, read them if it wants to, or turn them over to anyone who files the proper request. There is no such thing as a truly private electronic exchange. When we use Google, we give the company tacit permission to use the things it learns about us and our habits for its own or some affiliate’s purposes. That information, too, can be demanded by government agents, as can our credit card records, which reveal an enormous amount about us. Ditto for the paper trail you leave with those grocery store discount cards. And so on. Compromising Social Media Are we advocating going back to a world without Visa, iPhones, and Internet banking? No, of course not. But any consideration of the domestic cyberwar currently raging must include our cooperation with it, and the indisputable fact that we have quickly warmed to the convenience of the cyberuniverse without having paid much attention to the loss of privacy that has accompanied it. One of the clearest lessons of history is that government will happily embrace the latest in technological advances that offer it the possibility of greater control over its subjects. And use them. And then abuse them. But of course, “We don’t have a domestic spying program.” That’s what President Obama declared on August 6 on The Tonight Show, in one of the most disingenuous statements ever made by a politician—and that’s saying something. What Obama should do next is to try saying that to any of the increasing number of Americans like Brandon Raub. Raub, a 26-year-old decorated former Marine who served in Iraq and Afghanistan, made the mistake of posting political views and song lyrics to his private Facebook page that were critical of our current wars and of the government in general. Little did Raub know that the government is using Facebook as a surveillance tool. Even less did he suspect that in 2009, the Department of Homeland Security had launched Operation Vigilant Eagle, which aims to track military veterans who are voicing feelings of discontent, because they are to be regarded as potential terrorists. As a result of Raub’s Facebook rants, on Thursday, August 16, 2012, a swarm of local police, Secret Service, and FBI agents arrived at Raub’s Virginia home, asking to speak with him about his postings. After a brief conversation and without providing any explanation, levying any charges against him, or reading him his rights, the officials handcuffed Raub and transported him first to police headquarters, then to a psychiatric hospital, where he was incarcerated against his will. Although he was sentenced only to 30 days of “observation,” involuntary psychiatric commitment is different from an “arrest.” It requires no proof, and can be very difficult to extricate oneself from. Raub is not unique. Other veterans around the country have been swept up by Operation Vigilant Eagle and similarly harassed. The Raub story has a relatively happy ending, because he was one of the lucky ones. Outraged onlookers filmed the bust on their cellphones, and it went viral on YouTube. The Rutherford Institute, a nonprofit Constitutional law firm, jumped in and petitioned for his release, and an outraged Circuit Court judge ordered him immediately freed a week after his detention. The point, though, is that his ordeal exemplifies how closely Facebook and other social media are being watched. The default assumption must be that whatever you post to the Internet is going to be scrutinized—by someone, in some agency, somewhere—and that it constitutes evidence that may be used against you, even outside an actual court of law. Unleashing the Tech While the government can hardly be accused of illicit activity in the gathering of one’s publicly revealed Facebook information, surreptitious wiretapping without a warrant is another matter, with the legal niceties far from sorted out at this point. One of the truly disturbing facts about Edward Snowden’s leaks—which have caused such a commotion in the media and among civil libertarians, while also provoking calls in Congress for him to be tried as a traitor—is that they should have come as no surprise to anyone who has been paying the slightest attention. Clues have been popping up all over the place for more than a decade. “ECHELON,” for example, had been known about since before the turn of the century. A signals intelligence (SIGINT) collection and analysis network operated on behalf of the five signatory states to the UKUSA Security Agreement (Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the UK, and the US), it’s a software system capable of interception, content inspection, and dissemination of downloaded commercial satellite trunk communications globally, including telephone calls, fax, email, and other data traffic. On the domestic front, “Carnivore” was an early “packet sniffer” software deployed by the FBI in 1997. It could select and capture particular data packets flowing across the Internet, decode them, and examine their contents. The FBI countered the objections of privacy advocates by saying that Carnivore could distinguish between communications that could be lawfully intercepted and those that could not. Carnivore was eventually replaced by the far more powerful “NaurusInsight,” noted for being the universal wiretap system installed in Room 641A at AT&T’s operations center in San Francisco, as revealed in 2006. But the big leap forward came when President Bush authorized the “President’s Surveillance Program” (PSP) shortly after the 9/11 attacks. It included an ultrasecret NSA intelligence-gathering project code-named “STELLARWIND,” involving data mining of a large database of the communications of American citizens, including email communications, phone conversations, financial transactions, and Internet activity. Almost immediately, there was fierce opposition within the Justice Department on the part of those who believed the president had exceeded his Constitutional authority. But the dissenters lost, and the project proceeded. Though STELLARWIND’s name remained secret, in December 2005, the New York Times alluded to it when it ran an article titled, “Bush lets U.S. spy on callers without courts.” In the article, the NSA—whose mission was previously thought to be limited solely to spying on communications abroad—was outed for the first time as operating domestically. The Times cited as its sources “a dozen current and former officials, who were granted anonymity because of the classified nature of the program.” The nation yawned. The existence of the PSP itself has been known since 2008, when Thomas Tamm, a former attorney in the Department of Justice’s Office of Intelligence Policy and Review, anonymously leaked information about it to the Times. Then, in early 2012, whistleblower William Binney—a 32-year NSA veteran—went on record with all the gory details about the architectural and operational elements of STELLARWIND, which he had helped design. Binney said that the program he worked on had been intended for use in cases of foreign espionage, but after 9/11 was converted to spying on citizens in the United States—a development with which he disagreed and which led to his resignation from the agency in late 2001. He went on to state that the NSA has highly secured rooms that tap in to major switches, and satellite communications at both AT&T and Verizon, an assertion that was supported by the exposure of Room 641A. STELLARWIND itself was theoretically discontinued in 2007, but it basically continued under various different names at the end of the Bush administration and straight through the Obama years. These include programs brought to public attention by Snowden, such as “Boundless Informant,” “PRISM,” “Fairview,” “Dropmire,” and “XKeyscore.” The Snowden File Obviously, enough facts were known that there should have been a public airing of the whole warrantless spying issue long before Edward Snowden appeared. But since it is he who has become the poster boy for the issue, it’s worth reviewing some of these revelations. PRISM (leaked June 2013) PRISM went operational in 2007, operating under the supervision of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) Court. It’s a system the NSA uses to gain access to the private communications of users of nine popular Internet service providers: Google, Facebook, PalTalk, AOL, Microsoft, Apple, Yahoo!, Skype, and YouTube. The government contends that PRISM cannot be used domestically without a FISA warrant, but the leaked Snowden document calls PRISM “the number one source of raw intelligence used for NSA analytic reports.” FISA approval isn’t exactly tough to get. The Electronic Privacy Information Center reports that in 2012, the court received 1,856 applications and rejected none. (One day before PRISM leaked came the revelation that the FISA Court had been ordering a subsidiary of telecommunications company Verizon Communications to turn over to the NSA logs tracking all of its customers’ telephone calls on an ongoing daily basis.) The named companies went ballistic over this, insisting that their hands are clean. A typical response from Google CEO Larry Page stated that “any suggestion that Google is disclosing information about our users’ Internet activity on such a scale is completely false.” However, it’s possible that a bit of legal game-playing is going on here. This is the leaked graphic about PRISM that caused all the fuss: About it, the Washington Post wrote: “This slide draws a distinction between NSA surveillance programs that collect communications ‘as data flows past’ on fiber optic cables and PRISM, which collects communications ‘directly from the servers’ of U.S. Internet companies. “Some have interpreted this to mean that the NSA has ‘direct access’ in a technical sense: automatic, unfettered access to the servers’ contents. But in context, ‘direct’ is more likely to mean that the NSA is receiving data sent to them deliberately by the tech companies, as opposed to intercepting communications as they’re transmitted to some other destination. That’s not inconsistent with tech company lawyers scrutinizing each request before complying with it.” XKeyscore (leaked July 2013) This is a computer system used by the NSA for searching and analyzing Internet data about foreign nationals across the world. The program is run jointly with other agencies, including Australia’s Defence Signals Directorate and New Zealand’s Government Communications Security Bureau. It detects the nationality of foreigners by analyzing the language used within intercepted emails. XKeyscore takes certain types of raw metadata that the NSA has already collected using other methods, and processes it with arrays of Linux machines. The Linux processing nodes look for specific key content in these captured network sessions; there are specialized plugins to enable the mining of packets for phone numbers, email addresses, webmail and chat activity, and the full content of users’ Web browser sessions. For selected traffic, XKeyscore can also generate a full replay of a network session between two Internet addresses. But rather than dumping everything back to a central processor, each XKeyscore site keeps most of the data in local caches. According to the documents leaked by Snowden, those caches can hold approximately three days of raw packet data—full “logs” of Internet sessions. There’s also a local database at the network tap sites that can keep up to 30 days of locally processed metadata. Boundless Informant (declassified document leaked June 2013) A Big Data analysis and data-visualization system used to give NSA managers summaries of the agency’s worldwide data-collection activities. As explained in a Guardian article: “By extracting information from every DNI and DNR metadata record, the tool is able to create a near realtime snapshot of GAO’s collection capability at any given moment. The tool allows users to select a country on a map and view the metadata volume and select details about the collection against that country. The tool also allows users to view high level metrics by organization and then drill down to a more actionable level—down to the program and cover term.” “GAO” (Global Access Operations) is an NSA operational branch whose motto is “The mission never sleeps.” “DNI” stands for “digital network intelligence,” and “DNR” for “dial number recognition.” According to the XKeystroke slide show, “Boundless Informant is hosted entirely on corporate services and leverages FOSS technology (available to all NSA developers).” “FOSS” stands for “free and open-source software,” and I guess this means it could be disseminated pretty widely. Fairview (leaked June 2013) A mass surveillance program aimed at collecting phone, Internet, and email data in bulk from the computers and mobile telephones of foreign countries’ citizens. According to Snowden: “The NSA partners with a large US telecommunications company… [which] partners with telecoms in the foreign countries, [which] then allow the US company access to those countries’ telecommunications systems, and that access is then exploited to direct traffic to the NSA’s repositories.” Dropmire (leaked June 2013) A program aimed at surveillance of foreign embassies and diplomatic staff, including those of NATO allies. The Guardian reported that at least 38 foreign embassies were under surveillance—some as far back as 2007. Diplomatic spying by the United States had been known at least since 2010, when it was revealed that US agencies had spied on UN chief Ban Ki-moon, but at the time, it was not known that this had been done as part of a systematic program. Everyone Wants In These five are among the most important programs, but they are only the tip of the proverbial iceberg. Many others had been catalogued before Snowden came along; one blogger in March 2012 compiled a list of code names for 97 NSA (and NSA-contractor) programs involved in all aspects of SIGINT collection, processing, analysis, dissemination, and storage. Lest we forget, the NSA is hardly the only arm of the federal government in the domestic spying business. There’s also the FBI and the military. (Because we can’t know otherwise, we’ll give a reluctant assent to the CIA’s insistence that it is involved only overseas.) Almost certainly Homeland Security. Oh yeah, and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA). For example, the FBI is spending $1 billion on its “Next Generation Identification” program. The program is designed to advance the Bureau’s biometric identification services, providing an incremental replacement of its current integrated automated fingerprint-identification capabilities with a multimodal biometric database. To fingerprints will be added iris scans, palm prints, DNA data, and even tattoos, as well as facial images and facial recognition software that will enable identification of individuals from private-sector security camera records. Whether the goal is to create a database containing biometrics on every American is unknown at this time. Just recently, it came out that the DEA has skin in the game, too. An August Reuters article based on leaked documents revealed that the agency is “funneling information from intelligence intercepts, wiretaps, informants and a massive database of telephone records to authorities across the nation to help them launch criminal investigations of Americans.” For the record, the DEA is supposed to be hunting common criminals, not terrorists. But hey, who’s counting at this point? More interesting would be from whom it’s getting those intercepts, etc. That’s still classified. Furthermore, Reuters states that the documents show that “law enforcement agents have been directed to conceal how such investigations truly begin—not only from defense lawyers but also sometimes from prosecutors and judges,” and that “federal agents are trained to ‘recreate’ the investigative trail to effectively cover up where the information originated, a practice that some experts say violates a defendant’s Constitutional right to a fair trial.” Not to mention that it would constitute a unique situation in law enforcement. However, we can make some wild guesses as to the source of the info. The unit of the DEA that distributes the information is called the Special Operations Division, or SOD. Two dozen partner agencies comprise the unit, including the FBI, CIA, Internal Revenue Service, and the Department of Homeland Security. And, oops, I almost forgot—the NSA. The military, through the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), has a large number of projects under way, focusing on algorithmic improvement, espionage, surveillance, natural speech recognition, and video and image retrieval systems. Among that last group is something called the “Video and Image Retrieval and Analysis Tool” (VIRAT). It aims to develop a system to provide military imagery analysts with the capability to exploit the vast amount of overhead video content being collected. If successful, VIRAT will enable analysts to establish alerts for activities and events of interest as they occur. VIRAT also seeks to develop tools that would enable analysts to rapidly retrieve—with high precision and recall—video content from extremely large video libraries. This one is of particular interest, because it is probably critical to the success of “Argus,” a new 1.8-gigapixel camera meant to be deployed on drones. Argus merges information from 368 separate image chips and can surveil a medium-sized city with a resolution of six inches from 17,000 feet in the air. It creates a library, enabling the drone operator to “go back in time” to home in on a particular event in a specific time or place. And perhaps most significant, it can also pinpoint and automatically track anything that is moving within its field of vision. That means if you’re running or driving your car, it can zero in and follow you in real time. Though civilian applications are evident, the government is mum on whether there are any plans to deploy Argus domestically. Panopticon Arrives In that blogger’s list referred to earlier, there appears a particularly spooky term: “Panopticon.” Whether the NSA actually has a program with that code name has yet to be definitively documented, but the overall combined effect of its (and other government agencies’) efforts is eerily Panopticon-like. That is one of the few aspects of the Snowden-leak story that has been underreported. English philosopher and social theorist Jeremy Bentham first posited the idea of the Panopticon in the late 18th century. It was an architectural concept for a prison with cells arranged in a circle around a central tower where the guards—who couldn’t be seen by inmates—had direct visual access to every cell. The idea was to instill in the prisoners’ minds the notion that, since they could never know when they were being surveilled, they would have to assume that they always were. French philosopher Michel Foucault described how insidious and clever this was. It would serve “to induce in the inmate a state of conscious and permanent visibility that assures the automatic functioning of power. So to arrange things that the surveillance is permanent in its effects, even if it is discontinuous in its action; that the perfection of power should tend to render its actual exercise unnecessary; that this architectural apparatus should be a machine for creating and sustaining a power relation independent of the person who exercises it; in short, that the inmates should be caught up in a power situation of which they are themselves the bearers.” How’s that sound as a metaphor for the modern state? Inducing a condition of perpetual paranoia in the population may seem like an extreme measure, and it is certainly counterproductive for a society, as the KGB and Stasi should have demonstrated for us quite convincingly. Nevertheless, as Foucault correctly argued, that is the inevitable result of a surveillance that is perceived to be all-encompassing. Repeat the word one more time: Inevitable. Given the extent of what’s now going on in the US, it’s impossible to duck the question of government intentionality. Yet the problem goes even deeper than that. The Roman poet Juvenal nailed the concomitant danger nearly 2,000 years ago when he asked: Quis custodiet ipsos custodes? Or, as we tend to loosely translate it these days: Who will watch the Watchmen? Faced with all of this, the ordinary citizen may feel helpless. But one positive development from all the recent revelations about government surveillance is that a lot of people are questioning whether we’ve lost the allegiance to individual liberty on which the nation was founded, and are beginning to speak out that it’s time to get it back. That quaint notion is in for a long-overdue rebirth, which we may yet get. In the meantime, there are things that can be done to enhance individual privacy, which we’ve covered in past issues of Casey Extraordinary Technology. In addition, there are profits to be made from companies specializing in data security. Identifying them early and getting a jump on the crowd allowed us to make 102% with Fortinet and 46% in just one week with ArcSight. first_img Here’s the 6-month U.S. dollar index so you can see what’s happened since its low in early May. And as I write this paragraph, the London open is five minutes away.  All four precious metals, which had been up a bit on the day, had their prices turned lower starting about 45 minutes before the London open—and only platinum remains in positive territory at the moment.  Gold volume is a bit under 13,000 contracts—and silver’s volume is around 2,900 contracts.  The dollar index is up a handful of basis points. As October winds down, we have options and futures expiry for the November contract/delivery month in both gold and silver coming up next week.  But unless there’s surprise, I expect November deliveries to be a mere shadow of what transpired during the October delivery month.  The reason I say that is because the current gold open interest in November is only 352 contracts—and in silver, it’s 122 contracts.  Nothing to see here.  The big delivery month of the year in both metals is December—and what transpires in that month could prove interesting. And as I hit the send button on today’s column at 4:55 a.m. EDT, I note that all four precious metals are under renewed selling pressure now that London has been open a couple of hours—and all four are down a bit more from their New York closes on Wednesday.  Net volume in gold is around 23,000 contracts at this point—and silver’s net volume is about 5,200 contracts, neither of which are particularly large numbers for this time of day.  The dollar index is now down a couple of basis points. That’s all I have for today—and I await the New York open with great interest to see what JPMorgan et al have in store for us during the Comex trading session. See you tomorrow. The agreement with Sumitomo on the Fourth of July project is a great compliment to our recent agreement with Newmont Mining on the Wood Hills South project. We also have the Arabia, Golden Shears and some generative efforts being funded through our joint venture business model. We have enough capital in the bank to last two more years and no debt. The share structure remains at 33.5 million fully diluted. We are very well positioned to have a major win with an incredible share structure. Renaissance Gold has proven through the joint venture business model what exploration success with a tight share structure can do. Renaissance is the spinout of AuEx Ventures that sold in 2010 and made just shy of 100x their first private placement. It takes technical strength and fiscal conservatism to generate meaningful share holder returns in the high risk exploration business. Please visit our website for more information. Mining executives don’t care what happens to their public stockholders The gold price didn’t do much of anything in Far East or early London trading on their Wednesday—and the smallish rally that developed once the noon London silver ‘fix’ was in, got in the neck at precisely 8:30 a.m. EDT—ten minutes after the Comex open.  From there it chopped sideways until the 1:30 p.m. Comex close.  Then further selling pressure entered the market—and gold got closed almost on its low tick. The high and low were recorded by the CME Group as $1,250.20 and $1,240.70 in the December contract. Gold finished the trading day in New York yesterday at $1,241.00 spot, down $8.40 from Tuesday’s close.  Net volume was 103,000 contracts. The gold stocks gapped down at the open—and the rally that developed shortly after the London p.m. fix didn’t last.  It was down hill all the way from there, as the HUI closed on its absolute low tick, down 3.17%.  [NOTE: My new HUI chart is courtesy of Nick Laird, for which I thank him] Sponsor Advertisement The performance of the golds stocks looked terrific compared to the silver equities, as they got crushed to the tune of 6.37%. As usual, silver got hit the moment that trading began in New York on Tuesday evening—and never recovered.  The tiny rally that developed right at the Comex open ran into ‘da boyz’ and their algorithms—and silver, like gold, was closed almost on its low tick. The high and low were recorded as $17.535 and $17.115 in the December contract, which was an intraday move of more than 2 percent. Silver closed in New York yesterday at $17.17 spot, down 34.5 cents.  Net volume was pretty decent at 36,000 contracts. The dollar index closed late on Tuesday afternoon in New York at 85.40—and after a brief dip to its 85.24 low around 2:10 p.m. Hong Kong time on their Thursday afternoon, it chopped higher until around 2:40 p.m. EDT—and from there it traded pretty flat into the close.  The index finished the Wednesday session at 85.75—up another 35 basis points. Platinum hit its high at 9 a.m. Tokyo time—and then got sold down to unchanged.  The real selling pressure began the moment that Zurich opened—and platinum was closed on its absolute low of the day, down twenty bucks from Tuesday. Palladium did very little on Wednesday, at least up until its brief spike shortly after 11:30 a.m. in New York yesterday morning.  From that spike high it got sold down with a vengeance as the powers-that-be closed it down an even 10 bucks from Tuesday’s close. Once again the sell-off in the precious metal shares was out of all proportion to the loses in the underlying metal. The CME Daily Delivery Report showed that 1 gold and 10 silver contracts were posted for delivery within the Comex-approved depositories on Friday.  The link to yesterday’s Issuers and Stoppers Report is here. The CME Preliminary Report for the Wednesday trading session showed that gold open interest in October dropped to 235 contracts—and October o.i. in silver was cut from 102 contracts down to 14 contracts, from which must be subtracted the deliveries posted in the previous paragraph.  The October delivery month, which concludes one week from today, will go off the board without incident. There was anther withdrawal from GLD yesterday.  This time an authorized participant took out 67,293 troy ounces.  And as of 9:27 p.m. EDT yesterday evening, there were no reported changes in SLV. There was no sales report from the U.S. Mint. There were no in/out movements in gold at the Comex-approved depositories on Tuesday but, as usual, it was a totally different story in silver, as  585,333 troy ounces were received—and 446,684 troy ounces were shipped out.  Almost all the action was at Brink’s, Inc. and the CNT Depository.  The link to that action is here. I don’t have all that many stories today, so I hope you have the time to read the ones you like. Based strictly on price action—and as I indicated in Saturday’s weekly review—most likely there has been further technical fund buying and commercial selling in COMEX gold futures in the reporting week [that] ended on Tuesday, October 21. I would guess at least 15,000 additional technical fund contracts were bought net in gold—and perhaps more than 20,000 contracts. I don’t sense much technical fund buying in silver, copper, palladium and platinum in the COT report to be issued this Friday, but if there was any technical fund buying in silver, it was flushed out in Wednesday’s rotten silver price performance. Gold appears to be the only metal experiencing technical fund buying to date—and that still raises the possibility of the commercials rigging gold prices lower temporarily to lure the technical funds who bought, back to the sell side. In that case, silver may come under pressure, but it’s hard to see how many technical funds can be maneuvered to sell, seeing as managed money shorts are already at an all-time record high. – Silver analyst Ted Butler: 22 October 2014 I must admit that the price action in all four precious metals on Wednesday didn’t surprise me in the slightest.  But the shocker was the hammering that their associated equities took, especially the silver stocks.  As you know, I’ve commented on the disconnect between the movements in the metals themselves and their underlying share prices on several occasions since the low of two weeks ago—and yesterday’s action draws a similar response from me. The gold stocks are now back to where they were when gold painted its $1,184 low tick in the wee hours of Thursday morning on Monday, October 6—and the silver shares are even lower than that. If you’re looking for answers, the only one I can think of is that some precious metal mutual fund[s] had to unload a pile of shares because of redemptions—and its only a matter of time before Rick Rule is out telling all and sundry that it’s a perfect buying opportunity.  I don’t know how you feel about it dear reader, but after more than three years of this, I’m tired of somebody telling me to buy the dips.  I, like you, just want to see the stocks that we already own, do what we know they’re supposed to do. Of course the mining executives don’t care what happens to their public stockholders, because they’ll just get their respective boards of directors to reprice their millions/billions in stock options—so it’s no skin of their noses if their shareholders are getting wiped out in a rigged market. Here are the 6-month charts for the ‘Big 6’ commodities.  Note that we’ve had ‘failure’ in gold at its 50-day moving average, something I mentioned yesterday—and it only remains to be seen whether JPMorgan et al will continue this downward trend, or this is just a blip as we continue to move higher in price. This drake mallard duck was dabbling in the shallows a bit more than 10 meters away, which is point blank range for a 400mm lens.  He is resplendent in his new breeding plumage, as the drakes all look so drab in in the summer/early fall when they’re in the eclipse phase. I don’t normally crop creature photos this close, but wanted to show the iridescent green head from two different angles as the late-morning sun shone on it.  Plus it also accentuates two common English phrases so well—’water off a duck’s back’ and ‘duck tail’.  Both of which show their lineage in these two shots.  The red reflection in the water is, as usual, from the building in the distant background.last_img read more

first_imgBERLIN (AP) — Borussia Dortmund showed signs it can thrive this season without suspended forward Ousmane Dembele by opening its Bundesliga campaign with a 3-0 rout at Wolfsburg on Saturday.United States international Christian Pulisic scored one goal and set up another.Dembele remains suspended after missing training when Barcelona made a bid for the player. Dortmund is yet to receive a second offer after turning down a bid reportedly worth 85 million euros ($100 million) with another 20 million ($23.4 million) in add-ons.“We have a clear position and a clear idea. If this is met, Dembele will be transferred this summer. If not, he’ll stay with Dortmund,” sporting director Michael Zorc said before kickoff in Wolfsburg. “We won’t wait to the last day of the transfer window with this decision.”Dortmund fans have turned against the 20-year-old Dembele, who had six goals and 13 assists in his debut Bundesliga season after joining for 15 million euros from Rennes last year. Whats it like to live in Honduras today — and why

first_imgWhat’s it like to live in Honduras today — and why do so many people want to leave? Those are the questions that photojournalist Tomas Ayuso, who grew up in the Central American country, explores in a project he calls “The Right To Grow Old.”He picked that title because for many Hondurans, he says, especially young men in low-income urban communities, “the right to grow old has been destroyed. One has to fight for their right to grow old, either by migrating out of the country or enlisting in a gang for protection. But it’s not a given.”Many of his images are set on the outskirts of San Pedro Sula, a Honduran city of 850,000 that is one of the most violent in the world, with 142 homicides for every 100,000 people, according to 2015 data. Ayuso says he aims to show “the complex and difficult environments and choices facing youth in these neighborhoods” and follows the story of a teenager named Moises, who was being recruited by a gang.Like many parts of the country, the city struggles with poverty, crime and corruption. Boys are often forced to join gangs, according to a 2016 report by Insight Crime, a foundation that studies crime in Latin America and the Caribbean, and USAID.The violence is causing Hondurans to leave the country. From the time period of 2011 to 2016, 7,350 Hondurans sought asylum in U.S. immigration courts, a 166 percent increase from the previous six-year period, according to data from Syracuse University.Even amid the turmoil, Ayuso found moments of love and friendship: A couple comforts each other after a life-changing announcement; two friends atop a hill look down at the glittering lights of their neighborhood.Ayuso was able to win the trust of gang members and locals by spending time with them and making his intentions clear — “I’m capturing their stories,” he says.Ayuso, who had worked in the U.S. as a researcher on conflict in Mexico and Central America, took up photography in 2015. In 2016, he was a fellow at the International Reporting Project. He splits his time between Honduras, El Salvador and Mexico. Here is a selection of images from his project. Copyright 2018 NPR. If you knew of a child who was being forced by a

first_imgIf you knew of a child who was being forced by a parent or guardian to sleep on a cold concrete floor, in overcrowded surroundings, with screaming lights always on overhead that made it hard to sleep, with limited access to a bathroom, no way to brush their teeth, no soap and no towel — would you do something? Call the police or juvenile authorities to say, “A child is being mistreated. You should do something.”This week, the U.S. government went to court to argue that it’s acceptable to keep thousands of migrant children detained in U.S. custody. Let me repeat that: thousands of children in U.S. custody, exactly in such conditions. In 2014 — during the Obama administration, it should be noted — several young immigrants caught along the border said they had been given dirty water to drink and kept in crowded, frigid cells. U.S. District Judge Dolly Gee of Los Angeles ruled that children taken into federal immigration custody must be kept in “safe and sanitary” facilities. The judges of the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals, based in San Francisco, upheld Judge Gee’s ruling two years ago. But this week, Sarah Fabian, senior litigation counsel for the Department of Justice, told the three-judge panel she thought the phrase was vague. The judges sounded furious. Judge Marsha Berzon asked Fabian: “You’re really going to stand up and tell us that being able to sleep isn’t a question of ‘safe and sanitary’ conditions?”Judge William Fletcher said, “Cold all night long, lights on all night long, sleeping on concrete and you’ve got an aluminum foil blanket? I find it inconceivable that the government would say that that is safe and sanitary.””It may be they don’t get super-thread-count Egyptian linen, I get that,” he added, and said the soap provided didn’t have to be perfumed. But plain soap, he said, “sounds like it’s part of ‘safe and sanitary.’ “Judge A. Wallace Tashima said, “If you don’t have a toothbrush, if you don’t have soap, if you don’t have a blanket, it’s not safe and sanitary. Wouldn’t everybody agree to that?”Many of us would call the police if we knew children were being held in cold, cramped, filthy and uncomfortable circumstances. Thousands of children are being held in those conditions — in U.S. government facilities. Copyright 2019 NPR. To see more, visit https://www.npr.org.last_img read more

first_imgLast updated on July 2nd, 2019 at 09:11 pmFoxconn Technology Group could earn some of the $1.5 billion in payroll tax credits it is eligible for on work performed by employees outside of Wisconsin, according to a report of the Legislative Audit Bureau. The company reached a deal with Gov. Scott Walker to receive $3 billion in tax breaks from the state in exchange for creating 13,000 jobs and investing $10 billion in an LCD manufacturing campus in Mount Pleasant. The campus is part of an electronics and information technology manufacturing zone created by the state. Foxconn can receive payroll tax credits for jobs created within the zone or outside the zone but within the state. The LAB report, however, found that the Wisconsin Economic Development Corp. has written procedures that allow credits to be awarded for “any employee that does not live in Wisconsin and is designated as ‘remote’, ‘working at home’, or ‘sales.’”“These written procedures do not comply with statutes or WEDC’s contract because they allow WEDC to award program tax credits for the wages of employees who do not perform services in Wisconsin,” the audit report says. The LAB recommended WEDC bring its policies in line with state statute and the Foxconn contract. In a written response included in the report, Mark Hogan, secretary and chief executive officer of WEDC, said the agency is researching the LAB’s recommendations and would make changes if necessary. He noted that questions about Foxconn hiring outside Wisconsin came up during public hearings for the legislation that created the company’s tax credit program. At the time, the agency indicated non-resident wages subject to state income tax would qualify for tax credits as would those earned by residents of states Wisconsin has reciprocity agreements with.“These provided the basis for WEDC including these wages as those eligible to receive tax credits,” Hogan wrote. He said the zone was created to limit where the company could earn its $1.35 billion in capital investment tax credits, but the contract language was also intended to encourage Foxconn to spread jobs across the state. The LAB report also noted Foxconn would not necessarily have to create 13,000 jobs to receive all $1.5 billion in tax credits. The company could earn all available credits if it created 10,400 jobs with an average payroll of $69,900, compared to the required average of $53,875.BizTimes reported in July that how to determine the average annual payroll was among the issues during contract negotiations between Foxconn and the state. While wages above $100,000 are not eligible for tax credits, annual wages up to $400,000 do count towards the average. The company initially wanted all wages to count towards the average while the state wanted the number capped at $100,000. first_imgIn honor of Engineers’ Week (Feb. 22—26), the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) will celebrate by launching a series of activities and online campaigns promoting African Americans in engineering.[Related: 9 Black Women in STEM You Need To Know]During the start of Engineers Week, the NSBE will feature on its homepage (at www.nsbe.org) content about black engineers and the various subgroups in NSBE, including the society’s Special Interests Groups, collegiate and NSBE Jr. membership, and NSBE Professionals. The “Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day” event will feature LaTisha Durham, a computer and systems engineer who has worked extensively with the Naval Air Systems Command. Durham will interact with girls across NSBE’s website and social media to encourage them in engineering and STEM studies and career paths.Be 1 of 10,000, is another campaign to increase the number of black engineering graduates. Visitors to the campaign’s landing page can take a pledge to help NSBE meet its 10-year goal for U.S. colleges and universities which is to graduate 10,000 black engineers annually, with bachelor’s degrees by 2025.“Just as it takes a village to raise a child, it takes a village to raise a generation of black engineers,” says NSBE’s national chair, Neville Green. “In order to achieve our collective goals, we must collaborate with partners who are also passionate about the topic,” Green says. “It is our hope that this cooperation with our partners to increase the number of black engineering graduates will fill a critical void in the nation’s workforce,” Green concludes.NBSE also strives to raise awareness on how urgent STEM education is for the African American community. STEM jobs are projected to grow by 953,200 between 2012 and 2022, a growth rate that is 30% higher than that of the overall workforce. Yet this demand will be met with a projected shortfall of 1 million STEM workers over the next decade, according to the President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology (2012). The new campus is said to include over 50 acres of preserved open space and, like all Apple facilities worldwide, its workspaces will be powered 100% by renewable energy. “Apple is proud to bring new investment, jobs, and opportunity to cities across the United States and to significantly deepen our quarter-century partnership with the city and people of Austin,” said Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO in the release. “Talent, creativity and tomorrow’s breakthrough ideas aren’t limited by region or zip code, and, with this new expansion, we’re redoubling our commitment to cultivating the high-tech sector and workforce nationwide.” Apple recently announced that it will be expanding its operations, which will include a $1 billion investment into a new campus in North Austin, Texas. Additionally, the company plans to establish new sites in Seattle, San Diego, and Culver City, California, with expansion into cities across the United States including Pittsburgh, New York, and Boulder, Colorado. This will all take place over the next three years. be_ixf; php_sdk; php_sdk_1.4.18 https://www.blackenterprise.com/apple-will-invest-1-billion-into-creating-over-6000-new-jobs/ https://www.blackenterprise.com/apple-will-invest-1-billion-into-creating-over-6000-new-jobs/last_img read more

Oisa Ramen Slurp Go and Tiki Rock Bar Are Opening in Downtown

first_img 10/16/2017, 8:08 a.m. By Jacqueline Cain· Restaurant News Oisa Ramen Slurp & Go and Tiki Rock Bar Are Opening in Downtown Boston The two concepts will take over the space that was formerly the Place in the Financial District. Print 000center_img Moe Kuroki of Oisa Ramen. / Photo via Caroline Hubert VideographyRamen lover and self-taught chef Moe Kuroki has made good on her promise to open a small brick-and-mortar for her pop-up Oisa Ramen. A 12-seat, weekday slurp shop opens for lunch on Monday, Jan. 15, taking over some space inside the former Place nightclub in downtown Boston. Also on track to open there: Tiki Rock Bar, a craft cocktail bar with sushi and complementary snacks.“This is a big and exciting new step for Oisa Ramen,” says Kuroki, a MassArt grad and Brookline resident. The native of Fukuoka, Japan, started deconstructing the noodle bowls of her youth while pregnant with her first child, she previously told Boston.“I needed to have something to feel at home, and ramen, my favorite hometown food, became a craving. So, I decided to make my own,” she said. After popping up around Boston at places like Snappy Ramen, Shōjō, Juliet, and Brassica Kitchen, where Oisa had a regular residency this past year, Kuroki has nailed down a vegan-friendly smoky shoyu ramen, as well as tonkotsu (pork bone), and tsuke-men (dipping-style) ramen. All three noodle bowls will be on the menu at Oisa Ramen Slurp & Go, along with donburi (rice bowls) topped with beef, marinated fish, or vegetables to-go. There will be a few beers to pair with the food, but it’s meant to be a quick in-and-out lunch option for the downtown crowd, Kuroki says. It will be open from 11:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. on Monday-Friday, to start.Tiki Rock Bar will take over adjacent space at the Place, with its own entrance, dining room, and menu. The new concept is from Christopher Straub, a veteran of Hyatt Hotels. Straub most recently opened New York’s five-star hotel, the Park Hyatt; and was also part of the opening teams at the Shop and the Bar Downstairs (NYC), Cure Bar and Bistro (Washington, D.C.), and the reopened NoMi Kitchen (Chicago).“I have a strong passion for food and beverage and this is a concept that I came up with after some careful thought,” Straub says. The tiki-style bar will offer well-balanced drinks made with fresh-squeezed juices, house-made syrups, and over-the-top garnishes. Reinvented tiki classics, like crab Rangoon, sushi, and other pan-Asian street food will complement the bar program. A full entertainment license will allow for live music certain nights, Straub adds.“We will be utilizing highest quality ingredients in both our food and cocktails but at the same time we will be having fun with it,” he says. Both concepts are currently under construction. Stay tuned for more details Tiki Rock Bar and on Oisa Ramen Slurp & Go, and in the meantime, follow Kuroki’s pop-up ramen shop on Facebook and Instagram.Oisa Ramen Slurp & Go, coming soon to 2 Broad St., Boston, oisaramen.com.This story was updated Monday, Jan. 8, to reflect an opening date for Oisa Ramen Slurp & Go. A monthlong season of BBC films examining the liv

first_imgA month-long season of BBC films examining the lives of young disabled people will feature issues such as parenting, hate crime, relationships, and the qualities required of personal assistants.BBC Three’s Defying The Label season will begin on Monday 20 July with Don’t Take My Baby, a factual drama about a disabled couple’s struggle to keep their daughter.Among the current affairs offerings, Adam Pearson (pictured) is the latest presenter to explore the issue of disability hate crime, aiming to find out why it is “under-reported, under-recorded and under the radar”, in The Ugly Face Of Disability Hate Crime.Artist, campaigner and presenter Sophie Morgan travels to Africa to ask whether Ghana is the “world’s worst place to be disabled”.Among her discoveries, Morgan is taken by a disabled activist to meet a so-called “fetish priest”, who admits that he will dispose of a disabled child for money. The Defying The Label season also features a two-part mini-series which takes a group of young people and interviews them for a job as personal assistant for a disabled person their own age, and follows their experiences over the course of 10 days. Two programmes in the season are set at segregated, specialist colleges. One, Life Begins Now, looks at six students with learning difficulties as they prepare to graduate and “enter the real world”.Another, The Unbreakables: Life And Love On Disability Campus, looks at “the everyday antics” of students with high support needs who are living away from home for the first time, at the National Star College in Gloucestershire.Other programmes in the season examine young people adjusting to life after serious brain injuries; an 11-year-old boy who wants his leg to be amputated because a genetic condition has left his body affected by more than 200 tumours; a disabled teen who has been forced to leave the care system; and the challenges facing four young people with epilepsy. There is also a one-off mock gameshow, The Totally Senseless Gameshow, which “explores disability by disabling its celebrity contestants”, and “plays with taboos and flips between the action on stage to a behind-the-scenes comedy drama back-stage”.last_img read more

A disabled campaigner has won his third legal case

first_imgA disabled campaigner has won his third legal case against separate government departments over their failure to provide information in accessible formats.Graham Kirwan had already secured victories over the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) and the Department of Health.DWP previously paid him £1,700 damages for refusing to communicate by email over his personal independence payment claim, and in 2015 he was responsible for persuading NHS England to publish its first accessible information standard, thanks to another legal action. Now he has secured a confidential sum of damages from the Ministry of Justice (MoJ) over its failure to provide accessible versions of the forms he needs to take legal action for disability discrimination under the Equality Act.Kirwan, who is partially-sighted, has computer software that can magnify text, but it does not usually work with scanned or PDF documents. He had tried in 2015 to access forms from the HM Courts and Tribunals Service (HMCTS) “form finder” web pages but they were only available in PDF format. He asked HMCTS to make all its forms available in both PDF and Word formats on its website but was told instead to contact his local court every time he required a form. But this “reasonable adjustment” meant it sometimes took six weeks for a form to arrive, while on most occasions he never received it.Kirwan eventually launched a legal case against the Ministry of Justice (MoJ), which continued to insist that asking Kirwan to request forms from his local court was a reasonable adjustment. He pointed out that the court system was seriously under-resourced and that he was often facing delays of up to six weeks to secure forms that non-disabled people could download in minutes. He also pointed out that disability discrimination claims under the Equality Act must be lodged within one day short of six months, so the lengthy delay could be crucial in deciding whether he secured access to justice.Kirwan continued to push for a centralised system that provided disabled people with “a single point of contact and a prompt turnaround for requested forms”.MoJ finally conceded defeat and agreed to set up “a robust system whereby a court user can directly request and receive accessible forms promptly”, and to pay Kirwan damages and court costs.HMCTS has set up a centralised email address for requests for court forms and guidance in alternative formats (hmctsforms@justice.gov.uk) and says all such forms will be sent out within a maximum of 10 days.A Ministry of Justice spokeswoman confirmed the legal settlement.Kirwan says forms he requests in accessible formats are now arriving within 48 hours, thanks to the new system. He said: “I understand that the solution may not be ideal, especially as I originally wanted all forms on the site to be available in multiple formats.“It is now up to larger organisations with much more resources then me to push for bigger change.“I believe that in the circumstances the new system is much more efficient then that proposed by the MoJ and is a step in the right direction.”But he added: “There are still massive hurdles to overcome for disabled users of the civil justice system.“The judiciary is not bound by the Equality Act and it is extremely difficult to get respondents and defendants and specifically the legal profession to correspond in an accessible format.”last_img read more

first_img“The Rhinos will come with confidence after their win over Salford at the weekend. They had a bit of a slow start but that’s to be expected when you have a new coach and new players, they will of course get better over time as their new guys gel together. They have recruited well from the NRL, with Trent Merrin and Conrad Hurrell, to add to some of the dangerous guys they already have in their team like Jack Walker.I am happy how we have started the season and we want to continue that this week against a tough opponent, who generally plays well at our stadium. We will need to be on our game as always against them to get the two points. We don’t want to give them the freedom to play. We want to be on our game defensively and slow down their quick style of play down, as well as execute our own plays in attack. From our side, everyone is fit and we will probably run with the same side as Wakefield. It should be a great game.”After a week-off for the World Club Challenge Justin commented:“The break is probably not ideal after round two but it’s forced upon so we have to just get on with it. We have trained as normal and we have benefitted from the Roosters session which gave some our young players a great experience of being able to train against an NRL team.”On our players who have been featuring for Leigh Centurions, he commented:“Without a reserves competition, the dual-reg partnership with Leigh is our best option to get players who aren’t in the 17, much needed game time.Players should be playing as much as they can. Over in Australia, there are plenty of good players who aren’t in the 17 who have to play games for their feeder clubs. How else can you earn your way back in? The Championship is a good standard and it will certainly keep players sharp when they aren’t able to make it into our starting 17.The game against Leeds Rhinos kicks off at 7:45pm this Friday, 22 February, with tickets still available from the Club Ticket Office at the Totally Wicked Stadium, by calling 01744 455052 or by clicking here.last_img read more

PD washes its hands off President Vellas nomination debate

first_img SharePrint The Democratic Party said that it will not attend Tuesday’s parliamentary debate which will nominate former minister George Vella to become the President of Malta. The reason given by PD is that it said that Government will not amend the Constitution to appoint the new President by a two-thirds majority.Although the Democratic Party welcomed George Vella to the role, it reiterated its belief that Malta is suffering from a dysfunctional democracy, and that the President of the Republic is simply a figurehead.Party Leader Hon Godfrey Farrugia said presidents need more powers to ensure good governance, such as a Council of state, which its main focus will be to advise the President.WhatsApp <a href=’http://revive.newsbook.com.mt/www/delivery/ck.php?n=ab2c8853&amp;cb={random}’ target=’_blank’><img src=’https://revive.newsbook.com.mt/www/delivery/avw.php?zoneid=97&amp;cb={random}&amp;n=ab2c8853&amp;ct0={clickurl_enc}’ border=’0′ alt=” /></a>last_img read more

Kamra TalPeriti celebrates centenary of Architects Ordinance

first_imgWhatsApp It was on the 25th July 1919 that Herbert Plumer, then Governor of Malta, brought into force the Architects’ Ordinance, which governed the profession of Land Surveyor and Architect and paved the way for the establishment of the profession of Architect and Civil Engineer (Perit) as we know it today. This year, the Kamra tal-Periti is therefore celebrating the 100th anniversary of the Ordinance, and is marking this special occasion with the second edition of its Premju Emanuele Luigi Galizia. The Premju Galizia was first launched in 2018, the culmination of a long-held ambition of the Kamra to award excellence in architecture, civil engineering, urban regeneration and interior design. In this year’s edition, the Kamra is once again also awarding the best emerging practice, as well as launching two new categories, one for multiple dwelling projects having three or more units, and one for the best international project carried out by a locally warranted perit.Following a shortlisting process which took place earlier this month, the finalists will now present their projects to various panels of judges. The 2018 cohort of graduates of the Faculty for the Built Environment will also be presenting their Master of Architecture and Master of Engineering theses and dissertations, after also having gone through a shortlisting process last October. The presentations are open to the public and will be held at the Phoenicia Hotel between Monday 22nd and Wednesday 24th July as per the online programme. The final awards will be presented during a Gala Dinner to be held on the 25th July 2019, which will also be accompanied by an outdoor exhibition of the finalist projects which will be installed near the Christ the King monument in Floriana, and which will remain open until the 2nd August 2019. Apple bought Lightning trademark from HarleyDavidson

first_imgAdvertisement Apple officially landed the European trademark over the weekend on the Lightning name for its new mobile connector, but local regulatory filings show that Apple had to buy the rights from motorcycle maker Harley-Davidson.As the patent blog Patently Apple first reported, Harley had been granted the Lightning trademark in Europe in 2005 for a line of motorcycles and parts, though it doesn’t appear that the company ever brought any bikes to market with that name. Harley-Davidson did not respond to a request for comment.Apple was officially granted two European trademark registrations for “Lightning” on Nov. 24. The trademarks were only partially transferred from Harley, meaning that Hogs could carry the Lightning name in the future. – Advertisement – Financial terms of the deal weren’t disclosed. The trademarks Apple received cover a broad list of items, from motorcycle electrical parts and speedometers to audio and video equipment. They also cover vending machines, slot and pinball machines, Christmas tree ornaments, golf tees, cat toys, television sets and eyeglasses.Though the list was likely generated by Harley to cover all of its potential marketing bases, the TV and eyeglasses inclusions piqued some interest in the blogosphere. Could Apple be planning an iTV, or glasses that include the Lightning connector? If so, the company is now covered — in Europe, at least. An Apple spokeswoman was unavailable to comment for this story.Apple unveiled its new eight-prong Lightning connector in September when the company debuted the iPhone 5. It’s much tinier than the 30-pin connector that had been Apple’s standard since 2003, and it now helps power the iPad Mini, fourth-generation iPad and much of the iPod lineup, in addition to the latest iPhone.Though Apple says the smaller connector was necessary to miniaturize its product lineup, customers with legacy hardware have cried foul that Apple is charging $20 and up for an adapter. Cheap knockoffs have made their way to market, despite new restrictions put in place by Apple to prevent copycats.Credit: CNNlast_img read more

US blocks Intel from updating Chinas supercomputer

first_imgAdvertisement The US government has blocked Intel from helping China update the world’s biggest supercomputer. The company applied for a licence to export tens of thousands of chips to update the Tianhe-2 computer, but the Department of Commerce refused, saying it was concerned about nuclear research being done with the machine.Intel had also signed a separate deal worth $200m (£136m) with the US government to build a massive supercomputer at one of its national laboratories. – Advertisement – The Tianhe-2 super computer uses 80,000 Intel Xeon chips to generate a computational capacity of more than 33 petaflops. A petaflop is equal to about one quadrillion calculations per second. It is at the moment the world’s most powerful machine. The machine was due to undergo a series of upgrades to boost its number-crunching abilities past 110 petaflops, but the upgrades would depend largely on new Intel Xeon chips. The chipmaker informed US authorities of its involvement with the upgrade programme and was told to apply for an export licence. The US Department of Commerce said it refused Intel’s application to export the chips for Tianhe-2 and three other Chinese supercomputers because the machines were being used for “nuclear explosive activities”.Intel has has signed a large deal to build the Aurora supercomputer at the Argonne National Laboratory in Illinois. When finished that machine is expected to have a peak performance of 180 petaflops.Via BBClast_img read more

Just like M&S mince pies….. there are Group 3’s and then there are Group 3’s.Harlequeen could easily still find further improvement on only her sixth start of her career and holds Aidan O’Brien’s Somehow on both Epsom and Curragh Oaks form.O’Brien’s other runner Best In The World might have to be referred the Advertsing Standards Authority as, so far at least, she isn’t living up to her lofty name.Joseph O’Brien’s Arya Tara bids for a five-timer but this, by far, is her toughest task to date.Dermot Weld has a terrific record in this race – winning three of the last four – and the biggest danger may come from Shamreen who was a good second to Pretty Perfect in the Munster Oaks.
