Hiking is another awesome activity to do in Gunnison. Get off the road, and walk. There are endless miles of national forest trails to hike and explore. You can start in the Black Canyon, explore Crested Butte, mountaineer Monarch Pass or take a leisure hike in town. Pack a day bag with water, sun screen and some energy snacks and get going. Start your hike around or 10am ad plan to finish mid afternoon. This will guarantee you the best temperatures, sun exposure and ample time to get back down the trail. Hiking Trails in the Black Canyon

Many trails pass by steep dropoffs, so be cautious and keep a close watch on children.
Hikers should be aware that limited cattle grazing is permitted on the North Rim. Please keep cattle gates closed should you encounter them. Website Link

Fossil Ridge Wilderness Trails

Fossil Ridge is classic Rocky Mountain wilderness: Rough-hewn granite peaks tower behind glittering alpine lakes resting at the head of long, timbered glacier-cut valleys. On the surface, this properly describes the area, but looking deeper within Fossil Ridge, we find one of the Rockies’ wildest and most inaccessible stream drainages—Crystal Creek—and an uncommon juxtaposition of limestone and granite ridges.
