She was pictured breastfeeding son Zion on the cover of Elle Australia.

And two years on, Nicole Trunfio has spoken candidly about the impact of that famous photo shoot.

'In Australia we breastfeed anywhere and everywhere, we are very open about it and there is no judgment. It is a very free country,' Nicole said at the Mammas Making It event, according to The Daily Telegraph.

'I'm married to a Texan and it is a very different world. Even my husband would get very uncomfortable with me breastfeeding in public. For me it was very challenging.'

The comments come two years after Nicole garnered attention for the June 2015 cover of Elle Australia, which saw her breastfeeding son Zion, now two.

After the magazine hit newsstands, Nicole took to Instagram to explain the message behind the shoot was to reduce any stigma about women breastfeeding in public.

'There is nothing more powerful and beautiful than motherhood,' she began.

'The last thing I want to do is be controversial, so please take this for what it is, let us normalise breastfeeding. There is nothing worse than a mother that is judged for feeding her hungry child in public.'

She continued: 'I'm so proud of this cover and for what it stands for. I obviously don't look like this while I am breastfeeding but this stands for all women out there, whether you breastfeed or not, we gave birth, we are women, we are mothers.

'Thank you to ELLE for being so bold and making such an encouraging, positive and healthy statement.'

Nicole also told The Sunday Telegraph's Stellar magazine in December last year that husband Gary changed his views on breastfeeding after the photo shoot.
