Meanwhile, the star revealed he often suffered from crippling insecurity as he tried to find his place in his former band, often measuring himself against his bandmates - Niall Horan, Harry Styles, Liam Payne and Zayn Malik - while he came to terms with life in the spotlight.

The singer discussed his love and admiration for the one-time five-piece but explained that he felt he was seen as 'forgettable, to a certain degree' by some.

Speaking to the The Observer, the Doncaster native - who had experienced so much success by the tender age of 18 - explained that he didn't give himself the credit he deserved for making the X-Factor created band what it was.

He said: 'Like Niall, for example. He’s the most lovely guy in the world. Happy-go-lucky Irish, no sense of arrogance.

'And he’s fearless. There are times I’ve thought: "I’d have a bit of that."

'Zayn, back in the day. He could relate to me on a nerves level. In the first year we were both the least confident. But Zayn has a fantastic voice and for him it was always about owning that.

'Liam always had a good stage presence, same as Harry, they’ve both got that ownership. Harry comes across very cool. Liam’s all about getting the crowd going, doing a bit of dancing… And then there’s you. And then there’s me.'

Reflecting on his time on the X Factor in 2010, he admitted that he questioned his role in the band after he never had his own solo during the competition and it did grate on his confidence when performing.

He said: 'A lot of people can take the p*** out of that. But when you actually think about how that feels, standing on stage every single week, thinking: "What have I really done to contribute here?"'.

Only ever seeing himself as the 'kid wearing espadrilles, stood in’t back', the Yorkshire man insisted that his role within the band saw him dealing with the less glamorous side's of the industry and resolving any conflict the band had with their label.

Although feeling disheartened by his place in the group - which was a vital part of their success - he has since seen his own solo career flourish after his collaboration with US DJ Steve Aoki - which was released in December - reached number 2 in the UK charts.

Having had a difficult year, Louis opened up about his mother Johannah Deakin - who lost her battle to leukaemia in December - admitting she pushed him to where he is today.

Shortly after Johannah died, Louis was scheduled to perform on The X Factor with collaborator Steve Aoki and recalled receiving a 'team talk' from his mum shortly before her passing as she urged him to continue with his career.

The hitmaker is thankful his mother was always so supportive and believed in his talents because she encouraged him to go out and push himself harder.

Meanwhile, the star has been keeping himself busy in his downtime with co-parenting his one-year-old son Freddie Reign with ex-girlfriend Briana Jungwirth.
