'You aren't entitled to an opinion': Patton Oswalt and Meredith Salenger respond to critics of their engagement

Patton Oswalt and fiancee Meredith Salenger have responded to the critics of their new engagement.

The 48-year-old comedian and 47-year-old actress were criticized by some online commenters for getting engaged just 14 months after the death of Patton's wife Michelle McNamara.

Oswalt and Salenger both used their social media accounts to share a blog posting by Erica Roman defending the couple's decision.

The King Of Queens star in a Facebook posting called their critics 'bitter grub worms' and said he decided to ignore them after announcing their engagement.

'But yeah, I felt this rage. And Erica articulated it better than I could have ever hoped. So there you go. Thank you, Erica,' Oswalt wrote along with a link to the blog.

Oswalt and Michelle married in 2008 and she died in her sleep in April 2016 from an undiagnosed heart condition combined with prescription medication.

She was survived by her husband and their eight-year-old daughter Alice.

Roman became a widow at age 27 and leveled Oswalt's critics in her post titled A Widow's Rage Defense of Patton Oswalt's Engagement.

'You aren't entitled to an opinion. You don't get to comment on the choices of a widower while you sit happily next to your own living spouse. You didn't have to stand and watch your mundane morning turn into your absolute worst nightmare,' Roman wrote.

She added: 'Go back to scrolling Facebook and keep your ignorance to yourself.'

Salenger also shared Roman's article on social media as she acknowledged their critics.

'Everyone has been so lovely to us… ALL of Michelle's siblings and friends and family… a few trolls have strong opinions,' she wrote.

'But I think for Patton, having met and found love after over a year of intense therapy and openly grieving and dealing with his pain…I am grateful to be the one who helps him climb out of the depths of grief and find some joy again. And most of all… Alice is happy and feels loved.'

She continued: 'I have waited 47 years to find true love. Creating our family unit while honoring the brilliant gift Michelle has given me will be my life's goal and happiness.

'I am deeply in love with both Patton and Alice and very much looking forward to a beautiful happy life having adventures together,' she concluded.

Oswalt and Salenger went public with their relationship in June when they attended the Los Angeles premiere of Baby Driver and announced their engagement Thursday.
