'My gigs are going to be intimate': Niall Horan favours a small venue for his only Australian show as part of Flicker Sessions international tour

He returns to Sydney later this year for his only Australian date in the Flicker Sessions international tour.

And despite Niall Horan's fan following, the former One Direction star prefers to keep his performances low-key.

The 23-year-old, who will play the 2000-seat Enmore Theatre in September, told The Daily Telegraph why he chose 'intimate' gigs over stadium shows.

'My gigs are going to be a bit more intimate with minimal lighting; more of a gig than a show,' he explained.

Niall also claimed the style of his new album called for a more relaxed setting.

And while he enjoyed performing sold-out arenas with One Direction, he knew it wasn't the setting he wanted for his debut solo tour.

'I've been lucky enough to do the big shows with the big stages, the big lights and the big productions,' he said.

'For this type of music that I've been writing, I feel like bringing it down to me and the band.'

Niall is set to perform songs from his upcoming solo LP, including This Town and Slow Hands, which is currently No. 2 on the ARIA charts.

His tour plans are similar to those of former band mate Harry Styles, who is also performing Down Under later this year.

Harry limited ticket sales to just two per person and will play small venues in Melbourne and Sydney.

Niall's fans outside Sydney will have to wait until next year when the Irish pop star launches a larger-scale tour.
