TLC (Cooking Vinyl)
U.S. girl group TLC were strong independent women long before the Spice Girls and Destinys Child. They fled the limelight after the death of Lisa Left Eye Lopes, but this is a feisty, R&B-edged; return. Theres nothing as instant as 1994s Waterfalls, but Tionne Watkins and Rozonda Thomas state their case forcefully on No Introduction we paved the way.>★★★
How The West Was Won (Domino)
Only Ones singer Perrett was the deadpan voice on punk era standard Another Girl, Another Planet. His first new music in 20 years is boosted by wry lyrics and fluent guitar. The title track waxes lyrical about Kim Kardashian, while An Epic Story is a love song to his wife Zena>★★★★
Evolve (Polydor)
Unassuming Las Vegas quartet Imagine Dragons have become chart-toppers on the back of arena-pleasing rock anthems and machine-tooled pop hits. This third album contradicts its title by offering more of the same, albeit with beefed-up beats. Mouth Of The River combines Killers guitars, Pet Shop Boys synths and gospel vocals to horribly overblown effect, though the quirky Believer could be a hit.

Forever And Then Some (Third Man)
For fans of Tammy Wynette and Patti Smith advises the sleeve of this debut by Lillie Mae Rische. In truth, its mix of rootsy American styles owes more to Nashville queen Tammy than to punk priestess Patti, but theres no denying the strength of these road songs and hoedowns. Rocker Jack White produces with rough-and-ready flair, while three of Lillie Maes siblings there was once a Rische family band add guitar and mandolin.

Its three unreleased bonus tracks are so strong that its remarkable they were held in the vaults for so long: Man Of War is a rousing rocker; I Promise owes a little to Roy Orbisons Its Over; Lift, powered by crashing guitars, is unusually upbeat.

Relaxer (Infectious)
Having won a Mercury Prize and headlined Latitude Festival, Alt-J have quietly became one of Britains biggest rock bands. This third album is their most ambitious yet, with a 30-piece orchestra, guest singers, classical guitarists and the Ely Cathedral boys choir thrown into their art-rock mix. Its too try-hard and clever-clever in places, but warm and inventive in others, with the well-crafted folk tunes 3WW (three worn words) and Last Year particularly impressive.
