Jane Bond! Blake Lively signs on for 'female-driven' spy thriller The Rhythm Section with Skyfall producer Barbara Broccoli

Former Gossip Girl star Blake Lively is set to play a female spy in The Rhythm Section, a new espionage series produced by the team behind James Bond.

The 28-year-old actress will team up with renowned film producer Barbara Broccoli - who has produced the last eight Bond chapters.

Described as a 'female-driven international espionage thriller', The Rhythm Section will be an adaptation of British writer Mark Burnell's novel of the same name.

Blake will work with the spy franchise's production team as well as the director of acclaimed film Meadowland, Reed Moreno.

The story centres on grieving heroine Stephanie Patrick whose family dies in a tragic plane crash.

But after the distraught protagonist discovers the crash was no accident, Stephanie embarks on a mission to avenge her family's death.

Fuelled by revenge, she becomes a deadly assassin and tracks down the group responsible for killing her relatives.

A statement read: 'It is exciting for us to be working with the immensely talented team of director Reed Morano and actress Blake Lively, who have a strong vision for this very compelling story driven by a female protagonist.'

'The Rhythm Section is set to go into production later this year.'

Blake is filling up her schedule with numerous movie projects since giving birth to her second child, Ines, with husband Ryan Reynolds in September.

She will be seen next in upcoming flicks The Husband's Secret and A Simple Favour and she's attached to star in the upcoming Mixed Martial Arts drama Bruised.

The Hollywood starlet rose to fame as Serena van der Woodsen in Gossip Girl and was last seen on screen in edge-of-your-seat thriller The Shallows - revealing she performed stunts for the shark-movie whilst pregnant.

She explained in a behind-the-scenes clip: 'They didn't hire a stunt double till the last two weeks of shooting. Every single day there wasn't a single scene that wasn't stunt-heavy.

'Whether I was in the tank or when I was in the ocean, I was about 300 yards away from shore. They would drop me off on this rock that was three feet by three feet.'
