SPECIAL REPORT: Rooney and the new frontier: Premier League influence grows again as Everton move into Africa
IAN BIRRELL: When the vice-president of Tanzania heard Everton were planning to play in her country, she was amazed. 'I could not believe it,' said Samia Suluhu Hassan. 'I stopped in my tracks and asked if this was for real?' Like many fellow Africans, the veteran politician is an avid follower of English football. But the idea sounded unlikely: no English Premier League club had previously sent a full-strength squad to play a local team on the continent outside South Africa. And even the most passionate Tanzanian patriot would accept their east African nation is hardly a footballing powerhouse likely to lure a top team.

Sir Nick Faldo at 60: 'I'm amazed I'm still the last English winner of The Open' as he gets ready to play 18 holes at Royal Birkdale
EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW - DEREK LAWRENSON: Where else for Sir Nick Faldo to celebrate his 60th birthday on Tuesday but at The Open? Every landmark birthday he has enjoyed has been spent at the biggest event in the sport that has been his life and passion. His 30th birthday fell during the third round of his first Open victory at Muirfield in 1987. He was competing in the 126th Open at Troon for his 40th, while his 50th saw him play nine holes at Carnoustie with Rory McIlroy. This time he is not a competitor but the R&A;, in recognition of Faldo's status as a three-time Open champion and this country's greatest golfer, have granted him permission to play 18 holes at Royal Birkdale with defending champion Henrik Stenson, Olympic gold medallist Justin Rose and South African legend Ernie Els, who will be competing in his 99th major.

'World Cup bronze was great, but it left a sour taste in the mouth' - England Women's star Bronze serves notice as Lionesses bid to go two steps better at Euro 2017
EXCLUSIVE: The Women's European Championship kicks off in Holland on Sunday night but, rather than preparing for England's opener, Lucy Bronze could have been at the Wimbledon Champions Ball instead — if her mother had her way. Manchester City defender Bronze, England's modest PFA Player of the Year, was a promising tennis player who mum Diane believed had big potential. But Bronze chose football and, even when watching Jo Konta go further than any British woman in 39 years at SW19, neither her nor her family would go for 'what could have been' now.

How Federer moved to the brink of sporting history, despite fitting tennis around family life, weddings and managing £300m fortune
Last August, Roger Federer got the reassurance his knee would one day be strong enough for him to return to competition. He had decided to pack in for the season after Wimbledon due to recurrent injuries, and agreed to go for a hike with his parents on the trails around his mountain retreat near Chur in eastern Switzerland. They ended up walking for six hours, much longer than Federer had expected, and by the day's end he reckoned his knee would allow him to be back soon enough.

Bonucci says thank you to Juventus in full-page newspaper advert after securing £37m switch to Serie A rivals AC Milan
Leonardo Bonucci has taken out a full-page advertisement in La Gazzetta dello Sport to thank Juventus following his £36.7million transfer to Milan. The defender will undergo a medical at the San Siro on Saturday having agreed terms with the Rossoneri and a clean bill of health will bring down the curtain on seven successful seasons in Turin. And Bonucci, 30, paid tribute to Juve with a heartfelt message though it pointedly failed to make any mention of manager Massimiliano Allegri, with whom he had a turbulent relationship.

Giroud makes most of chance to play with Lacazette as Arsenal striker sends reminder to Wenger amid possible Dortmund exit
MIKE KEEGAN AT THE ANZ STADIUM: He may be on his way out but Olivier Giroud gave Arsenal fans a glimpse of what they could be about to miss as the Gunners rounded off the Australian leg of their tour with a straightforward victory. The Frenchman has been linked with a move to Borussia Dortmund following the £53million arrival of compatriot Alexandre Lacazette. Speaking at a kit launch on an island in Sydney Harbour this week an honest Giroud admitted he may well be about to ship out of the club he has been at since 2012. Here, he finished a Nacho Monreal pull back from close range in a relatively low key match, save for an 11–minute first-half spell in which Arsenal struck three times.

Gotze makes first appearance for Dortmund since suffering from metabolic disorder
Mario Gotze has made his first appearance in five months after coming on as a second-half substitute in Borussia Dortmund's pre-season friendly victory over Urawa Red Diamonds in Japan. Dortmund overcame the J-League runners-up 3-2 in front of almost 64,000 in the Saitama Stadium, but the biggest cheer came when Gotze replaced Nuri Sahin after 62 minutes. The Germany international last played for Dortmund in a 1-1 draw against Mainz in January this year, but he was withdrawn from the club's training a month later because of a 'metabolic disorder'.
