Embarrassed Marnie Simpson deletes tweet branding Love Island stars 'civilians' after clashing with Chris Hughes and facing backlash from fans

Having previously appeared on Celebrity Big Brother, it's no surprise she had jumped to the reality series defence after it had been accused of copying ITV2 dating show Love Island

Last month, Celebrity Big Brother's trailer came under fire for baring a striking resemblance to the Love Island villa, but Marnie Simpson hit back at the claims - branding Love Island's contestants 'civilians' and insisting there was no comparison to CBB's famous faced residents.

Her tweet appeared to irk Love Island star Chris Hughes who was quick to call out the Geordie Shore star, prompting an embarrassed Marnie to then delete her post after facing a backlash from fans.

Marnie had initially tweeted: 'Annoying that people would assume CBB are copying Love Island, celebrities don't copy civilians, more the other way round. Pipe down.'

Her comments didn't go unnoticed and Love Island finalist Chris - who had finished in third place on the show's third series with girlfriend Olivia Attwood - was quick to hit back at Marnie.

He tweeted in response: 'Civilians?' before then mocking Marnie further in a second tweet as he posted: 'Me and my fellow civilians, see you all in Southampton soon. On route; god bless.'

It appears Marnie has now had second thoughts and deleted her tweet from her page on the social media site, as many fans flocked to support Chris in light of her comments.

One fan wrote: 'Don't worry she's a little bit leave it,' while a second poked fun at the MTV star, as they penned to Chris: 'Don't forget us civilians now you're a celeb.'

One user questioned: 'Who was she before geordie shore?' prompting another to then respond: 'Who is she even after GShore?'

Another shared a quote that read: 'You're never too important to be nice to people,' as others tweeted: 'Got to be joking what the eff was the civilian comment about get a grip love and also there is only about 2 actual celebs in CBB.

'Let's use the word 'celebrities' very loosely!! Barely recognise any of those Z listers in the BB house!

'CBBs got nothing on love island anyway. It's S**t.

'I wonder if she classes her self as a civilian or a celebrity? once upon a time you had to do more than sh*g on tv to be a star. Sad times..

'@MarnieGShore please tell me this is a joke! It's because of us 'civilians' that you 'celebs' get where you are! Leave it out Marnie!

'She has to be bantering? Only made a name for herself through geordie shore ... Before that ... just a civilian ...

'I like you @MarnieGShore but this a abit of a thick statement. (sic)'

Celebrity Big Brother first found itself subject to Love Island comparisons at the end of July, after releasing its teaser trailer for the show's 20th series.

The camera panned around a house that bore a similar style to the Love Island villa and focused on a huge swimming pool, before zooming in on the hashtag '#cbb' that was seen floating in the water.

The Scottish narrator in the clip had drawn comparisons to Love Island's much-loved voice-over Iain Stirling and Big Brother appeared to ditch its traditional ominous backing music for an electo-pop sound synonymous with Love Island's sun-drenched theme.

Viewers were quick to comment on the similarities, with many accusing Celebrity Big Brother of riding on Love Island's success.

However, a spokesperson for Celebrity Big Brother said: 'The trailer reflects the new series of Celebrity Big Brother Summer 2017, launching Tuesday 9pm on Channel 5.'

The Channel 5 reality show has since found itself subject to more Love Island comparisons, after appearing to focus on the blossoming bromance between Ex On The Beach star Jordan Davies and Made In Chelsea's Sam Thompson.

They had performed a rap on the programme, as part of the house's talent show task, prompting viewers to accuse the duo of mimicking Kem Cetinay and Chris' friendship that captured the hearts of Love Island fans.

Viewers took to Twitter to hit out at the pair, as they wrote: 'Get jordan and sam out!! So boring and trying so hard to be like Kem and Chris #loveisland #showmance #cbb.

'How do these people find Jordan and Sam funny? They are literally copying the hell out of the men from Love Island. So fake #CBB
