SourceForge Acquires Ohloh

Today SourceForge has acquired Ohloh. We at Ohloh are pretty awed and excited at the opportunity (and challenges) ahead. I plan on blogging more deeply over the next few weeks but I wanted to give you some background on why this makes sense.

Most developers know that SourceForge is primarily a ‘forge’ (duh!) – providing open source developers free tools and services to help them succeed. However, for many less-tech savvy people, SourceForge is actually thought of as an open source directory. As a result, SourceForge has found itself in the middle of a lot of software-related activity, from downloading to source code management (and almost everything in between).

The service we’ve built at Ohloh has focused primarily on making sense of these types of activity. This has allowed us to gain insight into broad trends going on in technology. We are able to detect what software platforms, languages and licenses are gaining ground – from a “production” (ie: development) side, as well as “consuming” (ie: users). As a result, we’ve built a service to help companies gain insight and build strategies based on these combined open source metrics.

So, tying it together, the goal of the acquisition is to leverage Ohloh’s software development analytics to improve SourceForge’s insights about the open source development community and help SourceForge provide more relevant advertising.

As you see, Ohloh’s services will continue to improve and expand – and gain a lot more exposure by being part of the SourceForge brand. We’ve had a good opportunity to get to know the SourceForge team during the acquisition process and we’re thrilled at the chance to work with them.

  • Congrats to the Ohloh team.
Sourceforge was behind these days and Ohloh should bring it back in the front.
It is a new start for new features (code search, FOSS alternatives, blended stacks,FOSS maturity, …) and new combinations (swik, …).

  • I just hope that Ohloh will not be flooded with ads we see in SF!

  • Congrats, guys!

I hope SF will help Ohloh grow and become even more awesome!

  • Yes, this will help Ohloh to grow.

  • dmondark (dmondark)

Obviously this is a good step for Ohloh. At least as a team, so congrats guys. I am concerned though about how this would impact the services provided by Ohloh itself. I think it’s obvious how sourceforge fails in the front-end business. Their site is amongst the few old ones that are still pretty much unusable. Not to mention the hideous amount of ads. I just hope they keep supporting Ohloh as an asset without laying much hands on it. Good luck.

  • Sourceforge went bad the day they closed the source code to the site. I do not expect any improvement. I remain convinced that only bad things can come from this.

  • jason (Jason Allen)

    Thanks for the encouragement!

@dmondark: There are no plans to ‘commercialize’ ohloh at the moment. The goal is to use Ohloh’s code/people metrics to improve SourceForge – not to plaster ads all over Ohloh.

@Teddy: I know where you’re coming from – I frankly had some doubts myself. After meeting the people behind SF, I’m convinced they mean good.

Yes, they’ll continue chasing a profit – but they also know that their future depends on providing a competitive service.

I aim to be as transparent as possible during my transition to becoming a “SourceForger” – that means the good and bad. I’d love to hear any specific fears/concerns (from anyone). Got questions?

  • This is really good news for you guys. I know that SourceForce will not flood the site with ads.

  • @Jason: I’m concerned about the long standing idea of making Ohloh (completely) open source. Is this still on the roadmap? Do you really plan on releasing anything more?

Anyway, congratulations for the acquisition, you been doing a really good job with Ohloh for a long time and this will certainly push you forward to new areas.

  • I just read this, and I wish you guys best luck in the SourceForge family!

  • paulsm (Paul Smietan)

Awesome news for us all! Look forward to contributing some bits.

  • Interesting, maybe that’s the reason, why now it partly works to enlist CVS repositories at SF after this failed to work for a long time ?;-)

Would be cool if it still works with different code repositories and open source portals despite belonging to one of those portals now.

And of coure let’s hope, that here features long working well don’t get crippled or destroyed just for the sake of a sudden “hip” Ajax gag and UI change ?!!;-)

  • robin (Robin Luckey)

    Hi Werner,

Ohloh should have always worked with all CVS repositories on all forges. If you had trouble, we should have liked to hear about it.

Our goal is global coverage, with all forges and source control systems supported.

There are some places where SourceForge and Ohloh have overlapping functionality, and at some point it just makes sense to make some changes to accomodate that. However, there are no immediate plans to make any “hip” changes on Ohloh. 🙂

    Thanks,
    Robin

  • Congrats folks – well done.

Q1: When will Ohloh open source it’s code?

Q2: Will SF open source it’s code again?

    Greetings,
    Chris

  • robin (Robin Luckey)

    Thank you, slam!

Ohloh does not have a plan to open all of the code. Important, interesting pieces like the line counter, the license detector, and the source control adapters are open, and we may open more pieces in the future.

I don’t know what SourceForge plans — that question is probably better posed on the SourceForge forums.

    Thanks,
    Robin

  • Awesome, hope the people behind Ohloh got rewarded well for providing an excellent site 🙂

Figures in $ would be interesting ?

    thanks

  • uefgrounningbase (uefgrounningbase)

    yes it’s great

  • Great. Long life to Ohloh/SourceForge.net

  • Congrats to both you and SourceForge. The team behind SourceForge really are not evil, and they are trying very hard at bettering their site (and doing well at it!)

Good work, and I hope all good comes out of this.
