Iconic gig! Cate Blanchett tipped to play I Love Lucy star Lucille Ball in authorised biopic by Amazon

Beautiful actress Lucille Ball was renowned for her comedic work and made TV history on camera and behind the scenes.  

And now Australian star Cate Blanchett has been tipped to play Lucille in an authorised biopic about the American actress.

The Oscar-winning actress, 48, is due to appear in the Amazon Studios' biopic, Lucy and Desi, according to reports in Variety on Monday.

Lucille died of a ruptured abdominal artery at the age of 77 after undergoing major heart surgery the week prior.

The film will centre on the life of the iconic actress, who starred on the TV sitcoms I Love Lucy, The Lucy–Desi Comedy Hour, The Lucy Show, Here's Lucy and Life With Lucy. 

Lucille won four Emmys after being nominated 13 times for her iconic work, and she also won the Golden Globe Cecil B. DeMille Award in 1979.

According to the publication, Lucille and ex-husband Desi Arnaz's children, Lucie Arnaz and Desi Arnaz Jr., are producing the biopic.

The script has been written by Aaron Sorkin, who also wrote the scripts for The Social Network, Moneyball and Steve Jobs.

It is likely to be released exclusively on Amazon's streaming platform.

Daily Mail Australia have reached out to representatives for Cate Blanchett for comment.

Cate recently appeared in the Dan Rather biopic Truth and her latest movie credits include roles within Cinderella and Carol. 

She is currently filming Where'd You Go, Bernadette and is about to start work on voicing children's film How To Train Your Dragon 3.
