Game of Thrones fans are flocking to Ikea to snap up sheepskin rugs after it was revealed they are worn by the stars of the hit show.

Bosses at Ikea said today that sales of its rugs were set to soar after a 'huge increase' in online searches after it was revealed that character Jon Snow and members of the Night's Watch wore them as part of their costumes.

Costume designer Michele Clapton made the revelation during a talk in LA last year - which has just come to light - saying the capes worn by many of the stars 'were actually Ikea rugs'.

She said the rugs had be be cut and shaved, with leather straps added to make them look more 'authentic', adding: 'The budget is never enough. So it makes you more clever about what you're doing.'

Workers at the Ikea store in Wembley, north west London, donned the rugs as they paced the floors on Monday after it was revealed that the show used the firm's rugs.

The rugs used in the hit show include the Ludde and Skold sheepskin rugs, which cost from £30 to £120.

Game of Thrones fan Rita Hunt, 31, of Charlton, south London, said she went to buy a sheepskin rug today because of its use in the show.

She said: 'I'd feel a bit daft wandering about the streets in a sheepskin rug, but I'll wear it in winter while watching Games of Thrones.

'My husband will think I'll gone mad, but he doesn't like Game of Thrones and will probably be watching the football on his iPad.'

Carol McSeveney, Textiles Sales Leader at Ikea, said today: 'We are flattered that our rugs are featured in Game of Thrones.

'We know these rugs are warm and cosy but we hadn't envisioned them becoming a fashion accessory.

'Seeing them worn by Jon Snow and his brothers in the Night's Watch has inspired us to display them off the floor.

'Why drape them across your favourite armchair when they look just as good on your shoulders?'
