Game Of Thrones' budget has reached $10 million per episode more than once—but it was apparently not the costume department's fault.
While most viewers probably think the eye-catching medieval outfits on the fantasy drama cost a fortune, the costume team once used surprising items in order to craft their furry capes: Ikea rugs.
Costume designer Michele Clapton made the revelation during a talk at the Getty Center in Los Angeles last year. A video of the session received new attention over the weekend as the show's seventh season continued to unfold.

Trivia: Costume designer Michele Clapton made the revelation during a talk at the Getty Center in Los Angeles last year, while discussing the Night's Watch costumes (pictured)
Clapton was detailing the process that went into designing outfits for the Night's Watch, the battalion tasked with guarding the Seven Kingdoms' northern border, when she told the audience about the Swedish retailer's rugs and their role on the show.
'I'm sadly not allowed to show you fitting photos. It's a shame, as they give such an insight into the process of design and how they help the actor find the character,' she said.
'For instance, here, the way the weight affected his gait. These capes are actually Ikea rugs.'
Clapton herself chuckled while the audience laughed at this bit of trivia. 'We take anything we can,' she added.
Tricks: It is unknown exactly which Ikea model was used to manufacture the capes, but the rugs were cut and broken down before appearing on the show
Evocative: 'I want the audience to almost smell the costumes. Here they were waxed and frosted so they belonged to the landscape,' Clapton added during her talk
It is unknown exactly which Ikea model was transformed into Game Of Thrones couture. The rugs, however, bear little resemblance to what they looked like on the furniture giant's shelves after going through an extensive transformation process.
As Clapton revealed, they were cut and shaven before being used on the show, and the team added leather straps to them.
They then made them look worn through a breakdown process, which the costumer said is like a 'religion' on Game Of Thrones.
That process is meant to make the costumes as evocative as possible for the show's viewers.
'I want the audience to almost smell the costumes. Here they were waxed and frosted so they belonged to the landscape,' Clapton added during her talk.
