Dr. Mehmet Oz appeared on the Today show Tuesday morning with the intention of talking about losing fat - but Savannah Guthrie and Hoda Kotb were having none of it.

The pair of Today hosts were in the studio when the doctor came on to talk to Matt Lauer about 'overfatness,' but instead of heeding his words about cutting back on the fat, they decided to take a different route. 

Savannah shared a photo on Instagram showing herself and Hoda munching on pastries from a large variety tray and mugging for the camera.

'Just eating pastries w @hodakotb while Dr Oz discusses "overfatness,"' Savannah joked in the caption posted alongside the image.

As for Matt Lauer, he was likely grateful that he had been laying off the pastries when Dr Oz busted out a measuring tape to test if he was one of the 90 per cent of men who could be classified as 'overfat'.

'Overfat means that we're not trusting the scale, we're actually looking at the amount of fat in your body,' Dr Oz said.

'These researchers are provocatively arguing that we underestimate by 50 per cent how much extra fat we have on board.' 

Those who may not be considered overweight according to their BMI might still be overfat if the measurement of their waistline below the belly button doubled is more than half of their height.

The idea is that where you store your fat is more relevant to health than the body mass index or what you see on the scale. 

But Matt has a reason to celebrate, as Dr Oz concluded that his waistline measurements show that he is one of the few men out there who doesn't qualify as overfat.

Hoda and Savannah seemed more than happy to avoid Dr Oz's measuring tape however, and looked thrilled to get the chance to chow down on some snacks while their co-host carried on his discussion. 

For Hoda, this week has already been full to the brim with delicious desserts, thanks to the fact that she will be celebrating her 53rd birthday on Wednesday.  

Hoda has already marked the happy day with her family however, enjoying a trip to the beach over the weekend, which saw her sharing plenty of photos of her nearly six-month-old daughter Haley Joy.

As well as her adopted daughter, the mother-of-one was also joined by her longtime partner, Joel Schiffman, her mother, Sameha, her brother, Adel, his wife, Colleen, and their two daughters, Hannah and Ella, for the seaside vacation. 

In an image posted to her Instagram account on Monday morning, Hoda is pictured cuddling Haley in her arms while looking over her shoulder to smile for the camera. 

Joel, 59, has his arm resting on the baby girl's back, and the couple look as happy as can be as they as they pose in front of the waves. 

Hoda captioned the image with just two heart emoji — one for each of her loves.  

And the Today host also found some time to enjoy some cake during the celebration, posting an image of herself blowing out some candles on a delicious-looking chocolate creation that was presented to her by her family members on Sunday.
