Long Island boy, 16, dies after 'being struck by falling LOG that he and a teammate were made to carry while at football summer camp'

An 11th grader at Sachem East High School in Farmingville was killed during football practice at a paid summer camp on Thursday.

Josh Mileto, 16, was reportedly carrying a log along with another teammate at around 8:40am when the accident happened.

But they fell during the exercise, causing the log to strike one of the boys, causing massive damage and death, CBS New York reported.

The boy was attending a paid football summer camp supervised by coaches when the tragic accident occurred, according to a News 12 reporter.

The camp was intended to focus on strength and conditioning.

Mileto was struck in the head by the log in the accident. CPR was attempted on the field but the boy could not be revived.

He was then rushed to Stony Brook University Hospital, accompanied by his teammates.

But he was pronounced dead there, according to Suffolk Police Assistant Commissioner Justin Meyers.

The teammates and those on the field at the time are now speaking to investigators, NBC New York reported. 

Superintendent of Schools Dr Kenneth Graham released a statement saying that the the Sachem Central School District Administration, Board of Education and entire school community 'are truly saddened' by the loss.

As word of the horrific accident spread, friends and locals shared their condolences and sadness at the news online.

One local parent, Jamie Leigh, wrote: 'This morning Brandon witnessed something that is going to stay with him forever. It breaks my heart to see the pain and fear in his eyes knowing this could have been him.

'Football is a sport and is suppose to fun. It's suppose to teach kids how to work as a team and give them something to look forward to. Something to strive for and something to become better at.

'Not something that could scar you for the rest of your life. 

'I can't imagine how the parents feel. I don't even want to try to imagine if it was him. My heart goes out to the parents and siblings of this young man. I am so sorry for your loss.'
