Brandy reignites feud with Monica as she accuses her 'evil' fans of throwing shade after she wrote tribute claiming Whitney Houston passed her 'the torch'
Brandy Norwood on Wednesday rehashed her longtime tension with Monica Brown over social media in a spat which began with tributes to the late Whitney Houston on the anniversary of her birthday.
Early Wednesday, Monica, 36, posted on Instagram a shot of the late I Have Nothing songstress with a kind message that read, 'Happy Heavenly Birthday Nippy ... You still inspire many & touch hearts daily... You will forever be the greatest .... You will forever be missed.'
About six hours later, Brandy posted a collage of shots in which she was next to the I Will Always Love You singer - with a few references to herself, and the influence Houston (who died February 11, 2012) had on her.
Hard feelings: Brandi, 38, (R) took to social media Wednesday to lash out at singer Monica, 36, (L) and her fans after she was ripped online as fans accused her of trying to upstage Monica's tribute to the late Whitney Houston on the day Whitney would have turned 53
Brandy, 38, wrote, 'You live on in me... I can feel your Spirit inside of me and all around me ... love you forever... thank you for trusting me with the torch!!!'
That opened the floodgates for fans who thought that Brandy's tribute was a bit self-serving, letting her have it in the comments section of the post with varying degrees of shade.
'This b---- is as fake as the Moesha character she played!!!' one commenter wrote, while another chimed in, 'Brandy is lucky to be a HAS BEEN.'
One wrote, 'I just don't like Brandy comparing herself to Whitney considering how much Whitney achieved. I don't like her legacy being reduced constantly.'
Touching tribute: Monica posted a short and sweet tribute to the late singer early Wednesday
Bearer of the torch? Brandy's post, which came hours later, featured a collage of images as well as the claim that Whitney trusted her 'with the torch' in the R&B genre
One Twitter user noted, 'There's a BIG difference in Monica & Brandy's posts about Whitney today. Only one of them was actually about Whitney.'
Brandi eventually vented to the torrent of negative posts, pointing to her longtime musical rival, proclaiming, 'Monica needs to really check her evil a-- fans.'
Monica is 'always thinking something is about her,' Brandy said, adding that her earlier post about Houston had 'nothing to do with anyone but the two of us.'
Harsh critics: A number of social media users called Brandy out, accusing her of being self-serving with the post
Brandy said she remains 'crushed for life' that Houston - whose cocaine use was noted in the autopsy of her drowning death - 'passed period the way she did and passed on [her] birthday.'
She added, 'It's petty for everything that I say about Whitney for someone to have the audacity to think it's about someone else other than her,' adding that she was 'not to be F--ked with' on the sentimental day.
Brandy and Monica both achieved their biggest commercial success on their 1998 duet The Boy Is Mine, which was a number one hit for more than three months and took home the Grammy for Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group the following year.
Eerie coincidence: The singers were snapped at a Grammys gala February 12, 2011  at the Beverly Hilton, a year and a day before Houston was found dead inside the famed hotel
