'Black women are NOT a costume': Filipino make-up artist Patrick Starr is accused of cultural appropriation after wearing an afro wig to create a look inspired by Solange Knowles

YouTube star Patrick Starr has come under fire for wearing an afro wig in a look inspired by Solange Knowles, which many have bashed as an act of cultural appropriation.
The 27-year-old make-up guru shared a photo of himself in the outfit with his 455,000 Twitter followers on Monday, and posted another on Instagram.
In the snaps, he can be seen wearing his own version of one of the looks Solange donned at her wedding in 2014, which centers around a white jumpsuit. Patrick wore an afro wig, presumably to replicate the singer's hair on her wedding day.

Many Twitter users criticized the look, deeming the use of the wig culturally insensitive.
'Black women are not a costume. It's good that you are flattered by her but we are not a costume and you could have did it without the Afro,' one person wrote.
Several Twitter users called for Patrick to delete the post, while someone else pointed out: 'It's cultural appropriation since he himself doesn't face the struggles w/ having this texture. He can literally just take it off.'
Patrick did not delete the photos and instead opted to publish an apology on Twitter, pointing to his own Filipino origins.

'I am not in any way claiming to be black. I am Filipino and accepting and I hope we can all celebrate beauty/diversity all together.
One of his tweets, which includes one of the photos of Patrick in his Solange-inspired outfit, is currently pinned at the top of his Twitter timeline with the words: 'Peace. Love. Positivity.'
