A man in his 50s was found dead inside a Pacific Palisades mansion Thursday morning after a hours-long standoff with police. The man's estranged girlfriend, who lives at the home, said that he came over drunk Wednesday night and the two got into a fight. He shot at her with some of her mother's guns and she fled the home. Police showed up and the man started exchanging fire with officers. Neither police or the man's girlfriend were struck in the firefight. After firing several rounds of tear gas into the $14million residence, police stormed the home around 11am and found the man dead inside. It's unclear if the man killed himself or was killed by officers. Public records show that the actor Joseph Gordon-Levitt's mother-in-law Tamme McCauley owns the home (the actor and his wife pictured on the right). It's unclear if she is the victim.

Veteran NBA star forward Zach Randolph was arrested on a marijuana charge causing a crowd uprising and the destruction of five cop cars at a Los Angeles housing project on Wednesday. California is pioneering the $150,000 scheme to cool down the blisteringly hot streets in August by by turning some of its streets white which can reduce temperatures by up to 15 degrees. The lighter 'cool pavements' and streets reflect as much as 30 to 50 percent of the sun's energy, compared to only 5 percent for new asphalt, and 10 to 20 percent for aged asphalt. The concept of cool pavements has been around for years, and can be made from traditional pavement materials that are lighter in color, or can be painted with cool-colored coatings or surface treatments for asphalt surfaces. Sealants such as CoolSeal have shown a 10-degree reduction in heat gain.

A prosecutor decided not to punish officers over the death of Aries Clark (pictured), 16, who was carrying a BB gun when he was fatally shot outside a youth centre in Marion, Arkansas. Prosecuting Attorney Scott Ellington released bodycam footage which showed Clark holding what appeared to be a pistol. The officers 'ordered, cajoled, encouraged and begged' Clark to get rid of the gun, Ellington wrote in a letter to the head of Arkansas State Police who investigated the shooting. In one video, an officer can be heard promising to put his gun down if Clark drops his, telling the teen: 'You're somebody's kid, man. We don't want to do this.'
