Long-running sitcom Benidorm faces an uncertain future amid claims it is 'could be axed' by ITV after ten-years on air.

The BAFTA nominated show pulled in more than 8 million viewers at its peak, but sources reveal a new series is yet to be commissioned after an alarming dip saw its audience share fall by almost fifty percent.

An insider told The Sun: ‘Some feel the show has done its time. It’s still popular but many of the old faces are long gone. There is a feeling it is going through the motions.

‘Series 11 is yet to be commissioned and the concern is if it does take a break it might never come back.’

Launched in 2007, Benidorm went on to win two National Television Awards for Best Comedy Programme and two TV Choice Awards for Best Comedy Show. 

Its series four opener in 2011 commanded record viewing figures of  8.6million, but its series ten launch in 2016 struggled, with a comparatively low 4.7 million viewers tuning in.

However cast-member John Challis, best known for his role as Cockney car dealer Boycie in Only Fools and Horses, believes the show may well return after a short break.

'I think the show may take a year off for a pause and rethink,' he told the publication. 'I think it’s ideal to come out in January or February, and I’m looking forward to it but there’s no guarantee.'

Comedian Johnny Vegas, The League of Gentlemen co-creator Steve Pemberton and veteran stars Tim Healy and Sherrie Hewson have all featured prominently, while Shane Ritchie, Kevin Bishop and Joan Collins have enjoyed recurring guest appearances. 

American TV network FOX have reportedly adapted their own version of the show, named The Big Package. 

Based on a Mexican holiday resort, it will focus on a family from Boston who take a holiday to escape their dire financial problems at home.
