Spaniards are posting images of cats on Twitter to dilute gruesome videos and pictures of the Barcelona terror attack so the killers can't enjoy 'the blood spilled and pain caused'.

Animal lovers are posting photos of their pets alongside hashtags including #PrayForBarcelona, #TodosConBarcelona, and #FuerzaBarcelona, which is a slogan used by fans of the city's football team.

Some say they are posting the images to stop pictures of the violence being shared, while others claim they want to prevent useful information reaching any potential suspects.

At least 13 people have been killed and dozens injured after a van ploughed into pedestrians in Las Ramblas at around 5pm today.

More than two hours after the atrocity a man was shot dead after driving through a roadblock in a Ford Focus and opening fire, injuring two police officers.

ISIS has claimed responsibility for the attack. Terror police are also reported to have arrested another suspect.

He is believed to be Driss Oukabir, a Catalan resident in his late 20s of Moroccan origin.

At least 13 people were killed in the atrocity this afternoon. The van used in the attack was rented from Santa Pepetua de la Mogada, and a second van linked to the killings was located in the city of Vic, around 50 miles from Barcelona

Oukabir had earlier rented one of the vans used in the deadly attack. The suspect is being treated 'as a terrorist', police in Barcelona have confirmed.

Horrifying pictures and video emerging from the scene show armed police and paramedics rushing around Las Ramblas, a busy promenade in the centre of the city, as victims lie hurt in the street.

It remains unclear how many attackers were involved in the terror attack.
