'I was so lost after Lynx passed': Nina Dobrev talks the heartbreaking death of her cat... and how rescue dog Maverick brought her 'back to life'

Nina Dobrev was heartbroken after her cat Lynx died in March.

But the 28-year-old beauty said she was 'brought back to life' when she rescued her dog Maverick.

The Vampire Diaries star told Harper's Bazaar magazine: 'She rescued me as much as I rescued her. I was so lost after Lynx passed, but Maverick brought me back to life. I call her the world's chillest dog.'

'To my sweet sweet angel, As I look back on the last 18 years together, I smile through my tears. You brought me so much joy, love, unlimited cuddles and so many sandpaper kisses,' she said.

'I still remember the first day I brought you home, the size of a tea cup purring as I held you in my hands. You were so fragile and furry, as soft as the worlds tiniest cashmere blanket. I knew in that moment you were my soulmate.'

The star also wrote: 'From there our long journey began and we were inseparable. We grew up together in Toronto, then you followed me to Atlanta, and from there we road tripped across the United States through New Orleans, Austin City, Amarillo Texas, Santa Fe, Las Vegas, we even saw the Grand Canyon for our first time together. Our last chapter and final destination was here in Los Angeles.'

She added that she hoped she was 'able to give you a beautiful happy life filled with love, because that's what you gave me.' 

Her new dog is named Maverick after Tom Cruise's character in the 1986 hit Top Gun.

In her interview, Nina also talked about the end of her long-running TV series The Vampire Diaries.

She said being left jobless motivated her. 

'That was the plan from the get-go. If anything, the fact that [leaving] terrified me drove me even more.

'I needed to feel that fear of "Oh, my God, what if I never get a job again?" That just made me want to work five times as hard to make sure that didn't happen.'

''We didn't come from money. In the beginning, we lived with another family in a one-bedroom apartment. My parents had to work really hard,' she added.

Dobrev has also been working on her comedic skills: she told the magazine she has been taking an Improv 101 class with the Upright Citizens Brigade in NYC.
