She unveiled a bold new shaved head for her latest role in pop star Sia's directorial debut last month.

And Kate Hudson certainly created a buzz as she slipped into a scarlet swimsuit as she filmed a scene filmed a scene in a children's inflatable swimming pool on the set of Sister in Los Angeles on Monday.

The actress, 38, showcased her gym-honed physique in a retro red one-piece and sky blue flannel shorts as she chatted to members of the cast and crew.

Grinning away as she shared a joke with her co-stars, the mother-of-two looked happy and relaxed as she got to work on set.

Kate accessorized with small red 50s-style sunglasses to protect her eyes from the summer rays, and a long dangling silver necklace.

The Almost Famous star was spotted on the set of the low-budget film earlier in the day, wearing a lilac crop top as she cooled off with an iced coffee.

Australian singer Sia is co-writing the movie with Dallas Clayton, and the finished product will also feature Dance Moms star Maddie Ziegler, as well as Parvesh Cheena, Eric Davis and Abhimanyu Katyal.

Maddie, 14, has heaped praise on Kate during their time filming together, saying the pair have become like family members.

Speaking about what she's learned from her co-star, Maddie said: 'I mean everything. She's becoming like a family member to me, so. I love her so much.'

Although Sia has had a fair amount of experience directing her own music videos, this will be the singer's feature film directorial debut about a sober drug dealer and his autistic sister.

Speaking during a Q&A at Venice Days International Film Fest in 2015, Sia revealed she apprehensive of doing her cinematic project for fear of peer thinking it was simply for 'vanity'.

She said: 'I was too embarrassed to tell anyone I wanted to make a movie because I thought it would be seen as a vanity project because I was a singer.

'And then last year, after I made the Chandelier video, I realized that I was pretty good at directing, so I felt a little bit braver.'

She added: 'For me, the process was basically, I work out the movie. I’ll act it out, I’ll have the dialogue already in my head. I can’t be bothered to learn Final Draft.

'I’m not a technical person. Like, when I sing, I just want to sing the melody and write the lyrics.'

Kate went public with beau Danny Fujikawa in March; the musician was singer and guitarist in Los Angeles-based band Chief Danny before going on to co-found independent record label, Lightwave Records.

Kate was previously married to Black Crowes lead singer Chris Robinson, 50, the father of her son Ryder, 13, from 200 to 2007.

The actress also dated Muse frontman Matt Bellamy, 38, with whom she shares son Bingham, seven, from 2010 to 2014.
