How does West neutralise Kim without risking a world war?

Just when simmering tensions over North Korea’s nuclear missile programme seemed to be easing, its unpredictable dictator yesterday upped the ante in brazen style — sending a missile capable of bearing a nuclear warhead over Japan. It was an act of outrageous provocation. As we have seen, South Korea responded with a display of firepower near its border with the North, while President Trump announced he’d received Kim Jong-un’s message ‘loud and clear’ and repeated that ‘all options are on the table’. His words didn’t have the impact of that ‘fire and fury’ speech aimed at Pyongyang earlier this month, but the threat is implied. Which begs the question: just how long can the White House go on sabre-rattling?

Kim Jong-un oversaw launch of North Korea's missile test

Kim Jong-un was there in person (shown main image) to oversee the launch of North Korea's latest long-range ballistic missile test (inset) which flew 1,700 miles over Japan. Tuesday's aggressive missile launch sends a clear message of defiance as Washington and Seoul conduct war games nearby. Pyongyang said it was a Hwasong-12 intermediate range missile that the North first tested in May and threatened to fire into waters near Guam earlier this month. South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff said the missile traveled around 1,677 miles and reached a maximum height of 341 miles as it flew over the northern Japan. Kim expressed great satisfaction over what the North described as successful testing and said the country will continue to watch 'US demeanors'. He called the launch a 'meaningful prelude' to containing Guam, which is home to key U.S. military bases.

The civil protection department in Vladivostok was instructed to relocate residents living in the border area with North Korea. Russia shares a 24-mile frontier with the hermit state.

ISIS hideouts where extremists lived on Syrian border

Reeking of death, strewn with dirt-plastered debris, Islamic State's now-captured hideouts on the Syria-Lebanon border were the squalid homes of the desperate. In one three-roomed lair, a rusty stove is stood next to a soiled mattress, with stains of unknown substances across the rough floor. Dirty tissues, petrol canisters and rubbish litters the ground. Graffiti on the lair's dirty grey wall reads: 'Heroes of the Army/Operation Dawn of the Outskirts/ Dedicated to Ghassan Hamieh'. This is just one example of the huts, caves and tunnels that Lebanese troops say ISIS fighters used as lodgings. The terrorists spent three years holed up in this patch of barren territory on the Syria-Lebanon border, after its capture in 2014. Less than a week before MailOnline's visit, the lair had been retaken from militants by Lebanese Army troops, who has ousted 600 ISIS militants from the 46-square mile area in north-eastern Lebanon.
