History of Institute
Assam Engineering College (AEC), the first engineering college in the north-eastern India and a premier technical institute of the entire country, was inaugurated by Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru in year of 1955. It is the premier technical institute of North East India and is located in the Jalukbari area of Guwahati city. AEC has been the hub of many academic and supplementary activities in Assam for almost six decades. It offers Bachelor of Engineering (BE) courses in Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, Instrumentation Engineering and Industrial & Production Engineering. It also offers Masters of Engineering/ Technology (ME/ MTech) courses in Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering (ME) and Master in Computer Application (MCA) course. All the departments are having research facility and offer PhD programs. AEC is affiliated to Gauhati University which was established in the year 1948. It is approved by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE).
The College has a total campus area of around 400 acres. This includes Quarters for employees, Hostels for students, Gymnasium, Hospital, Post office, State Bank of India branch with ATM facility, Book stall, Canteen, Co-operative store, etc.
Faculties in AEC are inducted through a process of open advertisement throughout the country. The students are selected through entrance examinations held by the Government of Assam. The college is an example of cultural unity with students drawn from the different states in the country.
Apart from this the campus provides ample opportunities for developing extracurricular skills which include EDC, NCC, NSS, social, cultural and sports clubs. The Alumni of this institution have excelled in various spheres and are positioned very well globally in many leading government, public-sector and private organizations.
AEC hosts two inter-college fests annually, Pyrokinesis (cultural fest) and Udbhavanam (techinical fest). The fests draw large number of students from the colleges of north-eastern India and have been highly popular.

How to reach AEC
AEC is in Guwahati (also known as Gauhati) city and is located at about 13 km from Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport. Taxis are available at the airport for hiring. It takes around 30 minutes to reach the college. AEC is located at about 10 km from the Guwahati Railway station and about 11 km from the Inter-State Bus Terminus. Chartered Government bus service is available to AEC from Panbazar area of the city. City bus services can also be availed to reach the college.

Guwahati is connected by road to Shillong (100 km), Dibrugarh (478 km) and to all major towns in North East India by regular bus services. Guwahati is the junction on the North East Frontier Railway. It connects Kolkata, Delhi , Chennai, Mumbai and all other major city. It has an international airport, and is connected with all major cities including Bangladesh and East Asian countries like Thailand.

Kamakhya Temple
The Kamakhya Temple is a sakta temple dedicated to the mother goddess Kamakhya, one of the oldest of the 51 Sakti Pithas, situated on the Nilachal Hill in western part of Guwahati city in Assam, India. It is the main temple, dedicated to Kamakhya, in a complex of individual temples dedicated to the ten Mahavidyas: Bhuvaneshvari, Bagalamukhi, Chinnamasta, Tripura Sundari and Tara, Kali, Bhairavi, Dhumavati, Matangi and Kamala. Among these Tripurasundari, Matangi and Kamala reside inside the main temple whereas the other seven reside in individual temples. It is an important pilgrimage destination for general Hindu and especially for Tantric worshipers.
Umananda Island
Umananda Island (from Assamese Uma, another name for the Hindu goddess Parvati, the wife of Shiva; and ananda, "happiness") is the smallest river island in the midst of river Brahmaputra flowing through the city of Guwahati in Assam, a state in northeast India. The British named the island Peacock Island for its shape.
Srimanta Sankardev Kalakshetra
Srimanta Sankaradev Kalakshetra commonly Kalakshetra is a cultural institution in the Panjabari area of Guwahati, Assam, named after the medieval poet-playwright and reformer Srimanta Sankardev.It includes a cultural museum, library and various facilities for preserving, demonstrating and performing cultural items, besides a children's park. In addition to being Northeast India's largest cultural congregation, the Kalakshetra is also a major tourist spot in Guwahati. Built in the 1990s, the artistic excellence of Assam and rest of the north-eastern region is displayed here.
