Bear Grylls' new Channel 4 show Celebrity Island has come under fire for stars using the word 'f**k' a shock 52 times in the inaugural episode.

Swarming Twitter on Tuesday night, many fans revealed they were turning off the programme, which follows 10 celebrities on a Pacific Ocean island, due to the obscenities uttered - with Coronation Street's Ryan Thomas at the forefront.

The 33-year-old actor, who was also mocked for his reaction to a cramp in his leg, took to Twitter on Wednesday to apologise to a disgruntled viewer, while Channel 4 released a statement insisting the show was 'appropriately scheduled'.

Ryan's swearing count clocked up to a whopping 18, while Olympian Iwan Thomas was hot on his heels with 16 and Jordan Stephens coming in with 14.

While the programme aired, Twitter was in shock with the nature of the language, as one user penned: 'quit the swearing mate... not pretty! #CelebrityIsland', leading to Ryan responding stated: 'I know I hate it so sorry didn't even realise'.

Channel 4's statement read: 'The series is appropriately scheduled after the watershed, was preceded by a strong language flagging, and reflects the experiences of those on The Island.'

Viewers on Twitter penned: 'Watching #CelebrityIsland on catch-up - How much swearing? Shame as the kids really wanted to see it, they asked to switch it off...

Aside from the controversy, Ryan found love on the island with Lucy Mecklenburgh.l with whom he confirmed his romance a month ago during a cosy date at Wimbledon.

Viewers of the show were treated to the moment Lucy and Ryan shared their first kiss after they met on the show in April.

In the episode, the former TOWIE star, 26, can be seen leaning in for an intimate kiss with the Corrie hunk as they get saucy on a beach.

'Look at these love birds,' Iwan Thomas notes, while comedian Mark Watson remarks: 'Imagine if they had a baby – the bum on that! In a non dodgy way. That came out wrong.'
