The most expensive transfer window in history has finally closed with Premier League fans around the world debating whether their club has been winners or losers. A staggering £1.4billion was spent by the 20 top-flight clubs with 14 of them breaking their transfer records, from Chelsea to Huddersfield. But there were plenty of tears too, most notably from Arsene Wenger, Antonio Conte and Pep Guardiola who missed out on long-term targets in the final hours on deadline day. Sportsmail assesses the whole window for each club and delivers our report card verdict.

Chelsea have landed the signing of Davide Zappacosta from Torino in a £25million deal. The right-back has signed a four-year contract worth around £45,000 a week at Stamford Bridge.

Diafra Sakho joins list of bizarre deadline day stories

It is fair to say that the summer transfer deadline day of 2017 will be remembered more for the deals that failed to go through than any business that was completed, in England at least. While the likes of Alexis Sanchez, Virgil van Dijk and Ross Barkley stole the headlines with their high profile on-off moves away from their respective clubs, Diafra Sakho did his best to steal the limelight. The West Ham striker was due to report to the club's Chadwell Heath training ground at 11am on Wednesday, but instead boarded a flight to Rennes as he sought to push through a deadline day move.

Crystal Palace seal Liverpool defender Mamadou Sakho

Brazil 2-0 Ecuador: Paulinho and Philippe Coutinho score

Brazil's fine form in World Cup qualifying continued as they edged out Ecuador to guarantee top spot in the CONMEBOL table. Second-half goals from Paulinho and Philippe Coutinho - who shone on his appearance off the bench - were enough for the home side in Porto Alegre. The Selecao dominated from the off and could have had two or three more but for some wastefulness in front of goal and several saves from Ecuador goalkeeper Maximo Banguera.

MIKE DICKSON AT FLUSHING MEADOWS: Roger Federer and Mikhail Youznhy have an aggregate age of 71, and it certainly looked that way as the Swiss master was forced to battle past his fellow veteran Mikhail Youznhy at the US Open. Federer, 36, finally overcame Youznhy 6-1, 6-7, 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 to make the third round, and was helped by the fact that the Russian – who he has beaten 16 times before – looked even more crocked than he was.

Denis Shapovalov faces Kyle Edmund at US Open third round

MIKE DICKSON AT FLUSHING MEADOWS: One thing is for sure about Kyle Edmund’s fascinating US Open third round on Friday — it will not end the same way as when he played the same opponent in February.  That was when Canada’s Denis Shapovalov nearly blinded umpire Arnaud Gabas after smashing a ball in anger that, despite not aiming at him, missed the official’s eye socket by millimetres.

The eighth seed struggled with a wrist problem and had to save match points in her first-round win over Marketa Vondrousova on Wednesday so it was not surprising to see her in trouble again.

F1 stars will reach speeds of 229mph at Italian Grand Prix

The upcoming Italian Grand Prix offers a different kind of challenge to the Formula One drivers — and its high-speed action means Tim Wright spends up to 24 hours analysing data in preparation for this race. Wright is one of the lead race engineers at high-flying Force India, a team who have taken the current Formula One season by storm. His job, among other things, involves compiling a 40-page pre-race dossier for Sergio Perez and Esteban Ocon and analysing the performance of various parts of the car ahead of the next race. But his task is made slightly trickier this weekend. This Sunday's grand prix in Monza is like no other, with the circuit seeing cars register the highest speed of the year at 229mph while also allowing drivers to spend 70 per cent of the race at full throttle.

There are not many more sacred races on the Formula One calendar than the Italian Grand Prix at Monza - with no other venue having held more world championship events. In fact Monza's only non-appearance in the world championship came in 1980 when the Italian GP was held at Imola, and the success of the race led to the track being given its own spot on the F1 calendar in the form of the San Marino Grand Prix a year later. Sportsmail looks back at highs and lows from Imola in our picture special.

Sportsmail recalls legendary snapper Ted Blackbrow

I was sitting on a jumbo on the way to Dubai when Ian Wooldridge explained the picture he wanted. Saddam Hussein had invaded Kuwait and, just a few hundred miles to the south, a handful of very wealthy Arabs were watching the Dubai Classic in an air-conditioned palace.  Ian wanted to set up a snooker match in the desert between himself and commentator John Pulman so he could play with the absurdity of the situation. He got the organisers of the Classic to lend us the snooker table and remove the slate beds to make it lighter, but it still weighed over a ton.  As much as I liked the idea, I told Ian that it should be between Steve Davis and Stephen Hendry. Woolers agreed. I put the idea to Davis and he went for it.
