'Sorry Dad': Miley Cyrus pokes fun at her infamously lewd VMA twerking performance as she promises Billy Ray she'll be 'good tonight' at awards show

Miley Cyrus is a part of MTV Video Music Awards history.

And the 24-year-old singer, who's playing this year's VMAs at The Forum in Inglewood Sunday night, gave a nod to her notorious past with the show.

That day, she posted an Instagram photo of herself twerking on Robin Thicke at the 2013 VMAs, ribbing her father Billy Ray Cyrus: 'Sorry Dad.... I'll be good tonight I promise ... @vmas'.

Miley had added a slightly translucent image of Billy's face to the photo, making it appear as though his spirit were watching the proceedings.

Her memorable performance at the 2013 awards show had seen her dressed in nude lingerie and Robin in a black and white striped suit.

People in costume as massive multicolored bears frolicked around the stage amid the two pop acts.

This Sunday, Miley had also posted a photo of herself with an Elvis-esque studded powder blue jacket, as well as a bouffant redolent of the King Of Rock.

'MILEY CYRUS PERFORMING TONIGHT,' read text at the bottom fo the screen, and she's captioned: '@vmas #YoungerNow'.

She's posted another Instagram photo of herself with her back to the camera, revealing the words 'Younger Now' across the back of another studded jacket.

Younger Now is the name of Miley's sixth studio album - out next month - as well as the record's second single, which was released on August 18.

Several stars spent the day leading up to the awards sharing their excitement on Instagram.

Katy Perry posted a photo of herself in a gold outfit with a gold background by Shearer Photo. The Swish Swish singer's caption read: 'Your hostess with the mostest.'

She is set to oversee the event while plugging her new music. It has been rumoured that her foe Taylor Swift might show up, but a VMA producer said that was not true.

Ariana Grande shared a photo of herself with a dog. The hit maker said she was excited for the show which will take place in LA but revealed she would not be there.
