PORTLAND, Ore. — Showing better team work, an ability to tackle that took the wind out of the sails of the Oregon Aggies, and a more versatile system of play, the University of Nebraska won this afternoon the intersectional classic, 17 to 7.

But for an unfortunate fumble by Caley, as he was crossing the goal line to start the second quarter, the count would have been 23 or 24 to 0, depending on the goal-kicking ability of Big Tim Corey. But the fumble gave an otherwise draw game the most sensational bit of running a northwest gridiron has seen in years.

The ball slipped out of Caley’s hands and into the paws of right halfback Tuffy Conn of the Aggies, who sprinted 101 yards for a touchdown.

Inasmuch as Conn can do the quarter in fifty seconds most any old day, Gardiner and the other fast men of Nebraska had no chance to run him out of bounds.

Nebraska clearly outclassed the Oregon team in the first quarter, but the incentive of Conn’s touchdown caused a standstill in the second quarter. Aiding an inability to run ends, while Captain Bissett and tackle Walker were yet in the game, the Nebraskans began assaulting the Aggie line and set holes were ripped in it by Caley, Otoupalik and Dobson.

From the time the Nebraskans intercepted the Oregon forward pass in the middle of the field, until they had made their first touchdown, they did not lose possession of the ball. Usually, after a heroic Aggie resistance, Caley went out for a touchdown near the corner. Otoupalik kicked out and Caley belled the ball directly in front of the Aggies’ posts, from which it was easy for Captain Corey to boot it over.

Early in the fourth quarter the Nebraskans took further advantage of the Aggies’ inability to complete forward passes, made a place kick from the twenty-eight-yard line, Caley holding the ball while Corey lifted it squarely between the goal for an extra 3 points.

The Aggies lost none of their fight, or much of their steam, after the place kick.

There was a continual changing of players from both sides in the second half. The last quarter Caley intercepted a forward pass from Anderson and Dobson intercepted one and made thirty yards before he was downed. Caley stepped around the Aggies’ left forward for twenty yards more and a touchdown, Corey goaling.

When Caley fumbled near the end of the game, Hubbard picked it up and placed it on Nebraska’s one-yard line before he was downed by Caley. Coach Pipal rushed to the front. Rose made half a yard. Another signal was flashed for Rose, but he’d fumbled the ball and it was recovered by Nebraska and Gardiner punted to safety.

The Nebraska Cadet band made a beat hit with the 7,000 fans.
