Kudos to Schools for Prone Restraint Bans

We applaud the six school districts that have banned the use of prone restraint. Unfortunately, they are the only districts to ban this dangerous practice. Read more.

Investigative Report on Suicides in NC Jails

The rate of suicides in North Carolina jails, as a percentage of all deaths in those jails, is much higher than the national average. An investigative report by Disability Rights NC concludes that regulations governing NC jails are woefully lacking when it comes to identifying, protecting, and helping inmates at risk of suicide.

Video Explaining Settlement with State

Disability Rights NC filed a complaint against the State for not meeting its obligations to children with complex needs -- that is, children who have been diagnosed with an intellectual or developmental disability and a mental health issue. We reached a settlement with the State, and this video explains the services now available because of that settlement.

Quarterly meetings of the Board of Directors and PAIMI (Protection and Advocacy for Individuals with Mental Illness) Advisory Council are open to the public. If you plan to join us, please let us know by sending an email to or calling 877-235-4210. Members of the public are invited to make brief comments (no longer than 3 minutes) to the board at the beginning of the meeting right after the Welcome and Introductions. Disability Rights NC is a federally-funded program and cannot reimburse individuals who are not board or council members for transportation, meals, lodging, etc.
