Is This President Trump's "Read My Lips" Moment?

Tyler Durden's picture

Authored by Patrick Buchanan via Buchanan.org,

“Having cut a deal with Democrats for help with the debt ceiling, will Trump seek a deal with Democrats on amnesty for the ‘Dreamers’ in return for funding for border security?”

The answer to that question, raised in my column a week ago, is in. This week, President Donald Trump cut a deal with “Chuck and Nancy” for amnesty for 800,000 recipients of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program who came here illegally as youngsters, in return for Democratic votes for more money for border security.

According to preening Minority Leader Pelosi, the agreement contains not a dime for Trump’s Wall, and the “Dreamers” are to be put on a long glide “path to U.S. citizenship.”

Trump denies this is amnesty, and says the Wall comes later.

Fallout? Among the most enthusiastic of Trump backers, disbelief, disillusionment and wonderment at where we go from here.

Trump’s debt-ceiling deal cut the legs out from under the GOP budget hawks. But amnesty would pull the rug out from under all the folks at those rallies who cheered Trump’s promise to preserve the country they grew up in from this endless Third World invasion.

For make no mistake. If amnesty is granted for the 800,000, that will be but the first wave. “There are reasons no country has a rule that if you sneak in as a minor you’re a citizen,” writes Mickey Kaus, author of “The End of Equality,” in The Washington Post.

“We’d be inviting the world. … (An amnesty) would have a knock-on effect. Under ‘chain migration’ rules established in 1965 … new citizens can bring in their siblings and adult children, who can bring in their siblings and in-laws until whole villages have moved to the United States.

“(T)oday’s 690,000 dreamers would quickly become millions of newcomers who may well be low-skilled and who would almost certainly include the parents who brought them — the ones who in theory are at fault.”

Trump is risking a breach in the dam. If the populists who provided him with decisive margins in Ohio, Wisconsin, Michigan and Pennsylvania feel betrayed, it’s hard to blame them.

Which perhaps explains his tweet this morning...

Why did Trump do it? Clearly, he relished the cheers he got for the debt ceiling deal and wanted another such victory. And with the rampant accusations of a lack of “compassion” for his cancellation of the temporary Obama administration amnesty, he decided he had had enough heat.

It is not easy to stand up for long to the gale force winds of hostile commentary that blow constantly through this city.

Trump’s capitulation, if that is what turns out to be, calls to mind George H. W. Bush’s decision in 1990 to raise the Reagan tax rates in a deal engineered for him by a White House-Hill coalition, that made a mockery of his “Read my lips! No new taxes!” pledge of 1988.

For agreeing to feed the beast of Big Government, rather than cut its rations as Reagan sought to do, Bush was called a statesman.

By the fall of ’92, the cheering had stopped.

Can Trump not know that those congratulating him for his newfound flexibility will be rejoicing, should Bob Mueller indict his family and his friends, and recommend his impeachment down the road?

What makes pre-emptive amnesty particularly disheartening is that the Trump policy of securing the border and returning illegal immigrants to their home countries appears, from a Census Bureau report this week, to be precisely the prescription America needs.

In 2016, paychecks for U.S. households reached an average of $59,039, up 3.2 percent from 2015, a year when they had surged.

U.S. median household income is now at its highest ever.

Yet there are inequalities. Where the median family income of Asian-Americans is above $81,400, and more than $65,000 for white Americans, the median family income of Hispanic families is $47,675, and that of African-American households far less, $39,490.

Consider. Though black Americans are predominantly native-born, while high percentages of Hispanics and Asians are immigrants, from the Census numbers, Hispanics earn more and Asians enjoy twice the median family income of blacks, which is below where it was in 2000.

Still, black America remains steadfastly loyal to a party that supports the endless importation of workers who compete directly for jobs with them and their families. Writes Kaus, “The median hourly wage (of DACA recipients) is only $15.34, meaning that many are competing with hard-pressed, lower-skilled Americans.”

Looking closer at the Census Bureau figures, Trumpian economic nationalism would appear to have its greatest appeal to the American working class, a huge slice of which is native-born, black and Hispanic.

The elements of that policy?

Secure the border. Halt the invasion of low-wage workers, here legally and illegally, from the Third World.

Tighten the labor market to force employers to raise wages in our full-employment economy.

Provide tax incentives to companies who site factories in the USA.

Impose border taxes on the products of companies who move plants abroad.

Put America and American workers first.

Will any amnesty of undocumented workers do that?

Can't trust the word of a democrat politician... Their sole mission in life is to win at ANY cost even if it hurts our country

Kill the tainted voting machines and there might be honest elections.

If not, the evil communist/democrats will keep winning with vote fraud.

You cant have an honest anything with the fed at the helm. End the fed, THEN lets talk about elections.

I think that's the only solution at this point.

FWIW, I have a different take on this situation.

I think that Trump is using DACA as a pick to get something major done.  A bigly tax releif bill to let the middle keep more of thier money, full funding for border security, some kind of judiciary reform, entitlement reform, trade, who knows. - hell there are a LOT of BIG things that need to be done.

Also, remember that the actual DREAM act failed in congress for 15 years, that's why obunghole exec ordered it while telling us repeatedly that he lacked the authority.  Can it pass now? I have my doubts, and in any case Trump can veto it unless he gets what he wants.

He cut the legs from under the cucks, it looks like he's now playing hardball with the dems.

We'll see, and I hope I'm not wrong, I just feel like there's more at play here than evident.

If Trump believes he can make a deal where he gives the communists a hamburger today and they will pay him tomorrow then he is a fool.

If you believe Trump believes anything he said during the campaign then you are the fool.  The reality you people need to face is that you elected him to drain the swamp but his real title is King Rat.

JohnG's picture

Trump gave them nothing, in fact he got the ball rolling by rescinding obunghole's exec order, taking DACA out in 6 months.  IF congress can pass a replacement......it might stay, but Trump will make the Dems pay.

People are focusing on this like its a done deal.   It's not, It's just starting.

A Faithful man's picture

Just ask yourself who exactly has been obstructing Trump's every move and you'll know why Trump will make a deal to allow the DACA's to stay without amnesty and build the wall. It's a win win for Trump and a sore loser syndrome for those that just don't get the deal won't ever convenience the democrats or the republican obstructionists.

I doubt it, I suspect that what we will end up is with an effective tax hike. Part of the Trump proposal is to eliminate loopholes and Tax deductions. I think we will end up with very minor cuts, but at the cost of no to little deductions leaving us with an effective tax hike. I also think there is a strong chance we will end up with a National Sales Tax (VAT) as well.

Nothing Trump has done has fixed anything. We still have Obozocare, No immigation policy and now DACA. Trump has handed off his biggest bargining chips (Debt Ceiling & Obozocare funding) with zip in return.

I suspect that Trump will end up siding with Single Payer once Obozocare falls apart next year. Trump can't get anything done with the RNC, and appears to gone to "Dark side" with the DNC to get something/anything done regardless of the consequences.

It was pretty obvious from the Start that Trump is a one termer, if not because of problems delivering on campaign promises but also because of his age.

"He cut the legs from under the cucks"

Seem unlikely since Trump effectively neutered by cutting then off by himself.

JohnG's picture

You might be right but I'm having a hard time figuring out what's really going on.

I voted for Trump as a hail mary for America.

So I still have to own that and stand behind him, or shoot myself and be done with it.

One can hope, as bad a strategy as that is I have no other.

Note to Pat:

" If amnesty is granted for the 800,000, that will be but the first wave."  You are wrong.  The 800,000 you are referring to were the first wave AFTER PRESIDENTE RONALD REAGAN granted amnesty during his administration.  We are dealing with the effects of his MISTAKE today.  If Trump goes along with this it will be the second wave.

Blue Steel 309's picture

Election rigging has more to do with the election and party systems than actual ballot manipulation (though there is plenty of that too).

Primaries and corporate media's deliberate decision to barely cover most of them are how the Powerful get to decide who you CAN vote for. After that, the rigging of elections is kind of superfluous.

"Winner take all" elections are the other primary method of controlling who you gets to be a candidate. The false argument to keep this system is "we are not a parliamentary government". Nonsense. There is no constitutional basis for the type of elections that favor 2 parties and less representation.

The Citizens United decision for "campaign finance" was the tacit admission by the Oligarchy that elections DO NOT MATTER. If you believe in an independent Judicial branch, you probably believe in other fairy tales too, i.e. Santa Clause. Both myths serve a similar purpose - if you believe in the small lies, it is easier to believe in the bigger ones like "Truth, Justice, Honor", which are not objective realities but purely human creations. They are GOOD human creations, but they can not exist outside of faith.

In the case of government, the lies are invariably to support BAD behavior.

TheReplacement's picture

Whoa, careful there.  You may not realize it but you are implying that Trumpkins was the establishment puppet all along since he got 90+% of the media coverage during the primaries and general.  The true believers here will be tarring and feathering you for heresy if they can add dos plus dos and get quatro.

This deal gives the country to the communists for all time.  We all know the Repugnants were name only but now even if a real patriot comes along the votes just won't be there to win again.  Good night 'Murica.

But do look on the bright side.  All of these young dreamers will be shunted into the military soon enough so they can go die for their new country.  Oh Jose, we hardly knew ya.

armageddon addahere's picture

The media was INSTRUCTED to give Trump a big play in the primaries as part of the Clinton campaign's Pied Piper strategy. Did you notice how they made a complete 180 the day after the primary, from building him up to tearing him down? All part of the Clinton campaign plan. Unfortunately for Hillary they underestimated her lack of popularity, and Trump's ability to drum up support at rally after rally.

AGuy's picture

"But do look on the bright side. All of these young dreamers will be shunted into the military soon enough so they can go die for their new country."

I doubt that. It will be the middle class children that will marched off to fight pointless wars. These dreamers will end up on Welfare for life, and have no reason to volunteer to fight battles.

That said, Currently the US is on the fast track to start WW3, either with China or Russia, as it continues to out manuver both, and executing political and proxy wars very badly. US Foriegn policy is like watching the three stooges, bubbing around, pissing everyone off, and accomplishing absolutely nothing.

It attracts people who desire power and it attracts people who have GOOD INTENTIONS. It is debatable which group has done the most harm.

Yet Americans will persist in their useless belief that they can change the corrupt deep state system via voting. Perhaps, Trump might finally turn that thinking on its head. Next - rebellion and reset to a constitutional republic? One can only hope.

"How? What do you suggest? Seriously asking."

Go Galt. Do what you need to get by, but do absolutely nothing to help prop up the system. You can also revolt passively by going on welfare and do your best to collapse the economic system. The only way to dethrone them is to make them power less. When the supermarkets go bare, and the money is worthless, they will become essentially powerless.

Ultimately this is what caused the Soviet Union to collapse. People stopped trying. They took advantage of any & all gov't subsidized that bankrupted the system.

That said it would be a good idea to also have the means to be self-reliant so that when the supermarket shelves are bare, your going to start. When the Oil imports stop coming to US refineries you still have the means to keep warm. When the Water reserviors run dry, you have a well.

FWIW: No matter what you do, the system is going to collapse, so trying to hang on is pointless. Focus on being self-reliant so when the economy collapses your not SOL.

Spare me your bullshit about not voting. The Constitution has many more aspects to it than voting by the people. Plus it's now a huge, complicated mess. Whoever told you that voting would be some kind of a magic bullet?

But, news flash here, it kept Hillary out and Trump has done some good. As a RESULT of how people voted.

There is no way Trump is so stupid as to think he can trade away his border wall promise without automatically resigning himself to a single term presidency.  This is the point at which only those who really believe Trump plays 4D chess would be unconcerned.

any_mouse's picture

So is Trump, stupid or a back stabber?

Does it, at this point in time, make a difference?

Maybe Trump's role all along was to be a single term POTUS which results in a takeover of the national government.

Trump is the consumate opportunist, and is all about Trump. Jesus H Christ, I would have thought that much obvious, you know, with the super duper bold and gold, large lettered TRUMP, conspicuously plastered on everything he has ever touched. All guesswork and doubting can thus, be completely, entirely removed, as to who run bartertown.

Hint, it ain't Trump ... he's just another bit player, an actor on the stage, who may, or may not, on any given day, have forgotten his lines.

Sadly for many. there is no great white hope, nor any color hope, that is gonna come ridin on in, and fix everything, the systemic rot and corruption, on up .. although the pale horse, is another matter entirely ..

"resigning himself to a single term presidency"

Trump was always a one termer due to his age. He's 71 and would be 74 in 2020, He would be 78 by the end of his second term. Very few people are able to remain physically and Mentally fit after 70.

This is a nothing burger in my book.

If on the other hand all he does with respect to free trade are incremental changes, like tariffs on aluminum foil, well that's pretty much useless.  He needs to go big on trade.

Edit: the jobs lost due to immigration pale (hugely) in comparison to the jobs lost due to free trade.
