Tottenham 0-0 Swansea: Report

TOTTENHAM 0-0 SWANSEA - ROB DRAPER AT WEMBLEY: After the excitement of Borussia Dortmund, the brutal comedown of Swansea City. Tottenham can look swashbuckling against Europeans elite; not so much against Wales’ finest team. And it was a compliment to Paul Clement that the first half was so uneventful. He brought them survival last season with exceptional organisation and he isn’t about to tear up those foundations now. With Federico Frenandez cajoling and Alfie Mawson and Mike Van Der Hoorn responding, with superb positional play, Tottenham exited at half time gnawing their knuckles in frustration. Swansea don’t look the best team on paper; under Clement though they can be exceptionally hard to break down. Admittedly they have lost 4-0 to Manchester United this season; but on that occasion they were still in the game until they tired in the final ten minutes.

Birmingham City sack Harry Redknapp

Birmingham sacked Harry Redknapp on Saturday shortly after suffering their fifth consecutive defeat. Redknapp was appointed at St Andrews in May and was tasked with leading a promotion charge. But the Blues currently sit 23rd in the Championship after eight fixtures, making relegation look like a more realistic method of leaving the division.

LIVERPOOL 1-1 BURNLEY - JOE BERNSTEIN AT ANFIELD: Rookie goalkeeper Nick Pope helped his side earn an unexpected draw as Liverpool were left frustrated.

RIATH AL-SAMARRAI AT WEMBLEY: There was a moment towards the end of the first half when Renato Sanches took possession on the right but let cautious thoughts get the better of him

ADAM CRAFTON AT VICARAGE ROAD: This was a masterclass, the kind of orchestral exhibition for which Pep Guardiola is famed. At times here, City made it appear so easy.

Watford 0-6 Manchester City: Aguero helps City beat hosts

SAM CUNNINGHAM AT VICARAGE ROAD:Sergio Aguero proved he is as undroppable as Manchester City are unstoppable right now. The striker scored three of City’s six goals as they crushed Watford under a purple rampage of pure football to move to the top of the Premier League table. Aguero underlined his class and his quality with the hat-trick and an assist for Gabriel Jesus, while Nicolas Otamendi and Raheem Sterling added the rest. To think he could have left City if they signed Arsenal’s Alexis Sanchez.

Getafe 1-2 Barcelona: Paulinho nets the winner

GETAFE 1-2 BARCELONA - PETE JENSON: Barca had to come from behind to keep up their 100 per cent record so far this season but substitutes Denis Suarez and Paulinho got the goals as the ran out 2-1 winners. Things did not go according to the script early on when Gaku Shibasaki got a spectacular opener. The ball dropped to the Getafe number ten on the edge of the area; he drew back his left foot and cracked it like a whip to send and an unstoppable volley swerving into the roof of the net. It was worthy of Lionel Messi but it had been Getafe’s number 10 and not Barça’s who had opened the scoring.

Southampton's Virgil van Dijk 'embarrassed club' in row

Virgil van Dijk 'embarrassed himself, Southampton fans and the club' in his summer-long transfer saga over a prospective move to Liverpool, says Alan Pardew. Crystal Palace 0-1 Southampton: Roy Hodgson suffers defeat

CRYSTAL PALACE 0-1 SOUTHAMPTON- OLIVER HOLT AT SELHURST PARK: Before kick-off, it seemed there could be no better place for Roy Hodgson to begin his rehabilitation after the humiliation of that defeat by Iceland in Nice during Euro 2016. He is England’s best travelled manager but this is as close to home as it gets for Hodgson. Two hours later, a big, baggy coat covered his suit and his hair was flattened by rain as he walked back towards the tunnel. Cheers had turned to groans.

The Polish striker made waves earlier this summer when he questioned why the German champions didn't match the spending of Paris Saint-Germain and Barcelona.

Jurgen Klopp needs to get Liverpool class of 2017 firing

DOMINIC KING AT ANFIELD: It was another day for nostalgia at Anfield, a chance to press rewind and remember how it all began. This year marks Liverpool's 125th anniversary and the visit of Burnley fell closest to the date of their first ever game at this venue, when they beat Rotherham Town 7-1 in a friendly. The Liverpool Mercury reported that particular game was played in front of a 'modest attendance' but the team 'would get better with practice'. There was nothing so modest about the number of the crowd that had assembled for this Premier League game – once again there were more 53,000 in attendance. And to mark the occasion, some of the greats from the past paraded before kick-off to remind the new generation of what Liverpool used to be.
