Tying yellow ribbons around ole oak trees just became a lot more difficult.

Tony Orlando lost part of his finger in an accident at his Missouri home, TMZ has reported.

The Seventies crooner chopped the top of his left middle finger off after getting it caught in the garage door mechanism.

The 73-year-old's son John told the site his dad was calm and collected after the accident.

He found the tip of his finger on the floor, before driving himself to the hospital.

Surgeons attempted to reattach the digit, but there has been no word on the outcome yet.

Tony first entered the charts in 1961 as a 16-year-old with songs like Halfway To Paradise and Bless You.

In the Seventies he began performing under the name Dawn, eventually becoming Tony Orlando and Dawn.

Severed digits can be successfully reattached hours and even days after the trauma. 

Recommended procedure is to place the finger in a plastic bag, and place it on ice.
