Is that you, Martha Stewart? Sixties photographs reveal lifestyle guru as a young model

Martha Stewart has released photographs of herself as a young model in the Sixties.

The lifestyle guru, now 71, modeled in her teens, and supplemented her college scholarship with what became a very successful part-time job, counting Chanel among the brands that hired her.

'I got enough modeling jobs at $50/hour - which was a lot of money at that time,' she revealed in the PBS documentary MAKERS: Women Who Make America, which premiered earlier this week.

The photographs show Ms Stewart, who was a newlywed at the time (she married Andrew Stewart in 1961), in a wide range of guises.

She was clearly a versatile model, pulling off the classic Sixties look, with huge lashes and heavy flicks of eyeliner, as effectively as she did the preppy look atop a sailboat.

Still attractive: Even in her seventh decade, the lifestyle guru looks incredibly youthful

The documentary describes how Ms Stewart became one of the first woman in America to be a self-made billionaire.

After college, she traded photoshoots for the stock market, having landed a graduate role as a broker on Wall Street.

But it was her next step, restoring an 1805 farmhouse and then starting her own catering business in 1976, that would set the stage for her lifestyle empire.

When Alan Mirken, head of Crown Publishing Group, an associate of her publisher husband, tasted her cooking at a party she catered, she landed her first book deal and Entertaining was published in December 1982.

Countless more cookery and lifestyle books followed, and with it, fame, thanks to appearances on Oprah Winfrey and Larry King Live.

In her own words, she had turned homemaking, a subject associated with 'drudgery', and made it glamorous.

Explaining her success in the PBS documentary, she said: 'Entrepreneurs take a little idea, a germinal idea, and take over the world.'
