He's made no secret of his love for surfing.

And Liev Schreiber showed that his years of practice have paid off - to a point.

The 45-year-old actor was snapped expertly riding a wave on Friday in Malibu, before taking a bit of a tumble as the wave got the better of him.

The Tony-winning thespian was seen standing on his blue board, said to be a recent birthday gift from his longtime partner Naomi Watts.

He had a look of concentration on his face as he focused on keeping his balance but as the medium-sized wave crashed, it took the X-Men Origins star with it.

Liev was seen with his wetsuit rolled down to his waist before his surf, stretching his back in the sun with a look of pure contentment on his face.

He appeared eager to catch a bit of a tan on the unseasonably warm Californian day as afterwards he walked shirtless alongside his car, showing off his toned physique.

The father-of-two wore tracksuit pants that hung low on his waist, offering a glimpse of his underwear.

The actor had a scare in 2009 while holidaying in Sydney, Australia with Naomi when a rip tide caught him and he exhausted himself as he tried to swim against it.

'It was like a washing machine. I've never experienced a break like it,' the star told the Sydney Daily Telegraph newspaper at the time. It was his lifeguard training that eventually saved him.

'I didn't move my legs and actually rested underwater and waited until my legs untangled and then floated back up. I got nailed a couple of times. But I didn't panic and I was able to swim to safety.'

The actor was snapped on Sunday supporting Naomi at the Oscars, where she was nominated for Best Actress for her role in The Impossible.

Well not winning an Oscar must have been disappointing for Naomi Watts-but I bet it's lot easier getting over it when you have that waiting at home. LOL Great actor too.
