'He just rolls with it': Doctor Foster star Prasanna Puwanarajah explains why his character James hasn't yet ditched Gemma... as he praises the popular series after shocking cliffhanger

Fans have been speculating whether his role has an ulterior motive, and is perhaps working as a spy for her villainous ex-husband Simon.

But Doctor Foster star Prasanna Puwanarajah gave his own opinion about his character James on Wednesday, and hinted to fans why he is yet to dump protagonist Gemma.

Appearing on Lorraine, the actor admitted he thinks fans are too wrapped up in his character, and that he is simply 'someone who just rolls with it' - explaining his wild escapades with the doctor, played by Suranne Jones.

Over the last month, his teacher character James has been pursuing Gemma on the show - asking her on a date, which even resulted in the pair attending her cheating ex-husband Simon's party side by side.

However, while many fans took to Twitter to speculate whether he was secretly spying on the doctor, Prasanna revealed he thinks James is more relaxed than people believe.

Addressing the fact that James is not aware of Gemma's past, he told Lorraine Kelly: 'When I started with the character, I forgot that he's not been watching Doctor Foster. He doesn't know what we know!

'Its quite a communal experience. People get to work or go on to Twitter to talk about it.'

Fans were delighted on Tuesday night after Simon's young wife walked out on him, and cut off his access to her wealthy father's house and finances, as well as all contact with their daughter Amelie.

Thrilled viewers who'd watched Simon torment his ex-wife since the start of season two flooded Twitter with memes and posts declaring that he 'got what he deserved', and hailing Tuesday night's show the 'best episode yet'.

However the sensational cliffhanger ending - which saw Suranne's character speeding towards her ex-husband in her car in the closing seconds - means fans will have to wait until next week's finale to learn if their heroine took the ultimate revenge.
