'It puts me at risk': Doctor Foster's villainous onscreen husband Bertie Carvel reveals he feels worried about his safety after becoming the most hated man on television
He has become the most hated man on television after subjecting his onscreen wife, Gemma Foster, to a series of humiliating mind games in Doctor Foster.
But Bertie Carvel, who plays Simon Foster, has revealed that he fears for his own safety, as he is aware that out of 'the millions who watch it, there are likely to be one or two who can't distinguish between me and the character'.
The 40-year-old actor admitted to Radio Times: 'I'm aware that there are people on the internet saying how much they hate Simon Foster... I suppose that puts me at risk'.

Bertie then said that he hoped that fans could enjoy the show while knowing it is a fictitious tale, as he isn't paid enough to live in a secure gated community.
'You just have to hope that most people enjoy the fictional reality of Simon without thinking he's real'.
Meanwhile, after portraying the character for two series', actress Suranne Jones has admitted she hopes Doctor Foster will make people 'think twice' about affairs.

Speaking to the Sunday Mirror, the 39-year-old expressed her wish that viewers to re-evaluate their behaviour in relationships, as well as enjoy the drama that plays out on the show.
The brunette revealed to the paper that she hopes the show will help people realise the pain of affairs, and change how they 'conduct themselves' in their own relationships.
She explained of the series, which sees her character's life descend into chaos after discovering her husband's mistress: 'Hopefully it will make people think twice about divorce or having an affair in the first place.

'I certainly hope it makes people think about how they conduct themselves, if they do split with somebody.'
However, the former Corrie star did admit that she is also very proud of the journey she and co-star Bertie Carvel have created onscreen - and hopes viewers enjoy it.
'Ultimately, I just hope viewers enjoyed the ride of watching two people who really f***ing hate each other having to breathe the same air,' she added.

Returning to the BBC for a second series, the latest installment sees Simon and Kate, who is now his wife, return to Parminster with their young daughter - once again leaving Gemma's life in disarray.
However, the popular show shocked fans last week, when the former lovers embarked on a raunchy sex scene in the kitchen, despite their acrimonious split.

Simon Foster initially declined his ex wife's advances in Tuesday's episode, but he later succumbed to her when she pressed herself against him in lingerie.
After filming the emotional and gripping drama, Suranne recently admitted she was able to appreciate how strong her marriage is - and therefore sympathise with other women going through such trouble.
She explained to Marie Claire magazine: 'As soon as I finished Doctor Foster I obviously wanted to run straight home to give my husband a big cuddle.'
Joking the series even helped her romantic life, she added with a laugh: 'And I got pregnant within months of finishing!'
