'It was not true': Jared Leto denies ever giving used condoms to his Suicide Squad co-stars despite long-running rumors

Jared Leto wants to get one thing straight - he never sent used condoms to his Suicide Squad co-stars.

In a sit-down interview with SiriusXM and Entertainment Weekly Radio on Wednesday, the 45-year-old Oscar-winning actor denied he ever gave his co-stars on the supervillain movie - including Will Smith and Margot Robbie - the gross-out gift.

'There were some things that were mentioned about gifts and the fact that I was giving used condoms to people, which was not true. It was not true,' he insisted.

But Jared did confess to giving his colleagues some interesting presents while filming.

'I gave wrapped gifts to everyone, and people were thrilled to get them. They were laughing. We were giving whatever The Joker would give was the idea,' he said.

'It was really touching at the end to go and give the gifts. We'd be filming and people would be laughing, and they'd go and open up and there'd be a porno magazine or something, you know, "plus 60".'

'It would be whatever would be funny. You know, whatever would be absurd or outrageous.'

Reports about the talented star handing out condoms first emerged in April last year, in the lead up to the film's release.

During an interview with E! Online at the time, Jared's co-star in the cult movie, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, who played Killer Croc, confessed the actor had sent him 'sticky Playboy magazines' and even sent a dead pig to everybody on set.

'That was a good gift because it had the effect of unifying us as a group because then it became us against him,' revealed Adewale, 50.

'We sent the messenger back with the dead pig and our own personalized message. It got the ball rolling.'

But Jared confessed it was frustrating when the rumors surrounding his gifts quickly spiraled out of control.

'Some of the stuff that you do can go viral or get written about. Especially with The Joker, some of that stuff just took on a life of its own. And most of it was total bulls***,' he confessed.

'What are you going to do at that moment? It doesn't matter how loudly you shout or hold up a sign with your pants off in Times Square, people are going to go with the story that they want to run. And it just wasn't true.'

No big deal: He also said the gifts were simply given out 'in good fun' and were never supposed to have become as big of a deal as they did

'It was kind of like an art project. We were all like, putting together in the trailer. To see it kind of taken and manipulated, taken out of context and made this really horrid thing, and then having people speak like it was offensive, when it was anything but,' he said.

'It was in good fun and light-hearted and everything it should've been. But that's the world we live in,' he added.

The Thirty Seconds To Mars frontman also said he never went to any extremes to become his character, despite long-running rumors to the contrary.

In an interview with E! Online in April last year, co-star Will Smith claimed the actor 'went full Joker'.

'He really set the tone. He wasn't playing with it. He was dead serious as an actor. He was going in and he was 100 percent going into this character,' added the 49-year-old Focus actor.

Told: 'You work the way you work, I'll work the way I work, you can kiss my *ss if you don't like it,' he said

But Jared maintains there's nothing quirky or unusual about the way he works.

'I really just work hard. There's really no mystery to it and there's really nothing that special about the way that I work compared to anybody else,' he said.

'Was I focused when we were doing the scenes? Of course. You're stepping into big shoes. Look, you work the way you work, I'll work the way I work, you can kiss my *ss if you don't like it.'
