What is wrong with England? The ultimate verdict

After England stuttered to two narrow 1-0 wins over Lithuania and Slovenia in their last two World Cup qualifiers, Sportsmail asked former Three Lions players CHRIS WADDLE, MARTIN KEOWN, CHRIS SUTTON and PETER REID what is wrong with the national side and what they can do to improve ahead of the World Cup in Russia next summer.

Gordon Strachan: 'Small' Scotland are at a disadvantage

Two set-piece goals from Roman Bezjak overturned a first-half strike from Leigh Griffiths, and Robert Snodgrass could not convert a headed half-chance in the dying seconds after he had levelled with two minutes remaining. Bezjak's movement allowed him a free header from a Josip Ilicic free-kick and he had yards of space to slot home from 12 yards following a corner from the same player.

JONNY BAIRSTOW: I’ve been batting for more than three and a half hours. I’ve faced 160 balls. I’m on 99 — a nudge, a nick, a heartbeat away from my first Test century.

Lithuania 0-1 England: Harry Kane penalty enough for win

LITHUANIA 0-1 ENGLAND - MATT LAWTON IN VILNIUS: When a World Cup encounter bears a closer resemblance to 22 office workers hiring the local leisure centre astroturf, the value to the England manager has to be fairly limited. Gareth Southgate should probably brace himself for yet more criticism after promising a rise in standards and something that might make standing in the pouring rain for 90 minutes seem vaguely worthwhile the England supporters who turned up here in Vilnius.

England finished off their World Cup campaign with a win, beating Lithuania in their own back yard to add another three points to the board. Sportsmail's SAMI MOKBEL delivers his player ratings.

ROB DRAPER AT LFF STADIUM: England closed a successful qualifying campaign with a win over Lithuania. Here Rob Draper assesses the fringe players given a chance in Vilnius.

Kane's first-half penalty earned Gareth Southgate's side a 1-0 win away to Lithuania - a second straight 1-0 success following the late win over Slovenia on Thursday.

With little conventional action to speak of between Lithuania and England, Sportsmail's Robert Summerscales has rounded up seven things you may have missed from Sunday's qualifier.

Slovenia 2-2 Scotland: Visitors knocked out of World Cup

SLOEVNIA 2-2 SCOTLAND - STEPHEN McGOWAN IN LJUBLJANA: Scotland's World Cup qualification hopes were ended by Roman Bezjak's brace as Slovenia fought back from a goal behind to eventually draw with Gordon Strachan's side in Ljubljana. James McArthur's header into the box found Leigh Griffiths at a tight angle, and the Celtic striker volleyed his shot back across goal and in off the far post - the first goal Slovenia conceded a goal at home during this campaign.

If Rooney had been Italian, he'd have been loved like Francesco Totti was at Roma. You don't criticise Totti in Italy, even given reason to, you just don't touch him.

Arsenal have been dealt a worrying injury blow after centre back Shkodran Mustafi suffered a suspected thigh problem during Germany's World Cup qualifier against Azerbaijan on Sunday.

CRAIG HOPE AT THE CARDIFF CITY STADIUM: This is why international football matters. Forget the apathy of English attitudes. Forget Wembley's empty seats and bored minds.

MICHAEL WALKER IN LJUBLJANA: That Flower of Scotland, oh that Flower of Scotland. As the anthem says: 'The hills are bare now.' That's how Gordon Strachan and his players felt.

Liverpool star Mohamed Salah sends Egypt to the World Cup

EGYPT 2-1 CONGO: Deep into injury time Salah stepped up when his country were awarded a crucial penalty, sparking dramatic celebrations on and off the pitch at the Borg El Arab Stadium in Alexandria. The celebrations were not just contained to the Mediterranean port however. Fans honking car horns and waving Egypt's red, white and black flags took the streets across the country. In Cairo, an army helicopter dropped hundreds of Egyptian flags on thousands of fans gathered at the city's iconic Tahrir square.

Lewis Hamilton wins Japanese Grand Prix in Suzuka

JONATHAN McEVOY IN SUZUKA: Lewis Hamilton was virtually handed his fourth world championship as Ferrari went down the drain like overcooked spaghetti. The Japanese Grand Prix was only four laps old and Sebastian Vettel, having fallen from second on the grid to eighth place, was called in. ‘Box, Sebastian, box. We’re going to retire the car.’

Daniel Ricciardo invades Lewis Hamilton Instagram account

Lewis Hamilton was close to faultless after storming to victory at the Japanese Grand Prix but at least one of his rivals managed to get the better of him at Suzuka. Having seen title rival Sebastian Vettel retire early on, Hamilton controlled the race before sealing a fairly comfortable victory ahead of Red Bull duo Max Verstappen and Daniel Ricciardo.

JONATHAN MCEVOY IN SUZUKA: The Mercedes driver clinched his eighth race win of the season to move 59 points clear in the title race, as his nearest rival, Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel.

It doesn't matter whether it's before, during or after the race, the bad news just keeps on coming for Sebastian Vettel who lost further ground to Lewis Hamilton in the world championship.

The Mercedes driver held off a late surge from Max Verstappen to win in Suzuka and open up a 59-point gap on his main championship rival Sebastian Vettel - who retired early on.

Red Bull team principal Christian Horner claims that the current 1.6-litre V6 turbocharge engine has damaged the sport, reducing competition and making F1 a far less appealing spectacle.

Sebastian Vettel has not given up on his world championships hopes despite a catastrophic retirement at the Japanese Grand Prix all but handing Lewis Hamilton the title.

Chris Eubank Jnr was not fazed by atmosphere vs Yildirim

Eubank Jnr overcame Yildirim with a third round knockout on Saturday but his victory was marred by the violence that erupted in the stands before the fight, where about 50 men were involved in a brawl. However, the English boxer claims that the atmosphere he faced during the Billy Joe Saunders fight was much worse, claiming that Saturday's hostilities were not an 'issue' for him.

Chris Eubank Jnr beats Avni Yildirim with knock-out

JEFF POWELL IN STUTTGART: Son of Eubank produced a performance worthy of his father to not only claim a victory crucial to his future but to quell a potentially deadly riot brewing among the Turkish community in this German city. Chris Jnr came into a cauldron of menace and silenced the thousands of haters by demolishing their standard bearer with the stupendous knock-out which stakes his claim to a place among the world’s elite super-middleweight boxers. It took several minutes to revive Avni Yildirim following his collapse under a barrage of uppercuts and finally a decapitating left hook.

The incident occurred after Polworth was substituted late in the victory that took the Highlanders into the Irn-Bru Cup quarter-finals.

Two years have passed since Jurgen Klopp took over from Brendan Rodgers at Liverpool and for many supporters of the Anfield club so much has changed, but so much feels the same.

Miguel Angel Jimenez knows importance of being yourself

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW BY CALUM CROWE: It begins with Seve. As far as golf and Spain are concerned, it always does. Anything else would be an insult to the most prodigiously gifted player Europe has ever produced. Seve’s words could just as easily be used to describe Miguel Angel Jimenez, one of his closest friends and another man who defies so many of golf’s conventions. Jimenez is a man who doesn’t just dance to his own tune; he’s the guy who composes the music for the guys who dance to their own tune. However, the influence Seve has had on his fellow Spaniard cannot be overstated.

UFC 216: Tony Ferguson calls out Conor McGregor after win

Tony Ferguson urged Conor McGregor to defend his UFC lightweight title after securing the interim belt in the main event of UFC 216 on Saturday night in Las Vegas. Ferguson had to weather Kevin Lee's early storm before finishing the fight in the third round with a triangle choke. 'El Cucuy' threatened with an armbar earlier in the third round. Just after Lee evaded the attempt, Ferguson was tightening a triangle choke. After a brief struggle, the exhausted Lee tapped out to the choke.

South Africa were very unlucky not to beat the All Blacks, losing 25-24 in a match that showcased the best the Rugby Championship has to offer.

Rugby's disciplinary system continues to undermine the sport. Areas of zero tolerance on the field are supposed to co-exist with random acts of judicial leniency when offences are punished.

Anthony Crolla came away victorious as he edged out domestic rival Ricky Burns by unanimous decision in their lightweight bout. Both fighters came into the fight on the back of defeats.

A shot in time:Hackney Marshes was home to 120 pitches

MICHAEL WALKER: It is known as the spiritual home of England’s Sunday football. Hackney Marshes is almost as famous as some of the players who are brought along there to make advertisements, such as Lionel Messi and Eric Cantona. What the advertisers seek is the grassroots authenticity with which the Marshes resonate. Hackney Marshes’ sprawling pitches have an image, an atmosphere and, as the photograph here from 1962 shows, a history. ‘I first played there in 1948, when I was 15, 16,’ says Johnnie Walker. ‘The team were called Islington Queens — it didn’t have the connotations it has today!’

Bundesliga clubs offering young British players a chance

KIT HOLDEN: Not one of those players is older than 20. The sporting directors of the Bundesliga, it seems, have developed a taste for young British talent. For those young players, meanwhile, the Bundesliga is an increasingly popular stepping stone on the road to stardom. This summer alone, five young British players have joined a Bundesliga club.

Jonny Bairstow opens up about when mum's cancer returned

EXCLUSIVE: I know everyone draws first the easy straight line that connects me to my dad. I don't blame them, but in doing so one fact, which is the most important of all, usually goes unnoticed or gets ignored. I look so much like my dad — same chin, same cheekbones, same forehead — and I play a little like him too. But I am my mother's son. I am who I am because of her. My dad passed on his cricketing talent. My mum has enabled me to use it.

JONNY BAIRSTOW: My dad said he always remembered a Sunday League game at Hull against Hampshire. Geoffrey Boycott was out lbw to a shooter, a horror of a delivery.

JONNY BAIRSTOW: Get picked for an Ashes Test at Lord’s and you know you’re going to meet the Queen. She arrived before the game against Australia in 2013 and we lined up for inspection.

JONNY BAIRSTOW: To be whitewashed in Australia because of Mitchell Johnson — suffering only the third 5–0 defeat in 131 years of the Ashes — was humiliating.

JONNY BAIRSTOW: It was a bitter, depressing March morning in 2016, the bruised cloud so low you felt it could hardly sink much lower without smothering the whole of Headingley.

Spain 3-0 Albania: Gerard Pique booed in comfortable win

Goals from Rodrigo, Isco and Thiago helped Spain secure a place at next summer's World Cup - but their 3-0 victory over Albania was overshadowed by the frosty reception received by defender Gerard Pique. Pique, a vocal supporter of Catalan independence, has often divided opinion among supporters of the national team. But in the wake of his comments on last week's referendum, the Barcelona defender's popularity appeared to reach a new low on Friday. He was booed by large sections of the Alicante crowd every time he touched the ball and was replaced on 60 minutes by Nacho after putting in a shaky performance.
