So long sheriff! Fashion Police cancelled, will end run with tribute to late host Joan Rivers

It has limped on for years following the death of its iconic host.

But Fashion Police is to finally sign off with a special tribute episode to Joan Rivers later in the year.

It will be hosted by the comedienne's daughter Melissa Rivers, and she will be joined by current panelists Giuliana Rancic, Brad Goreski, NeNe Leakes, and Margaret Cho.

Melissa, who took over the programme following her parent's death, told Variety: 'I am so proud to have been a part of this show and am so proud that it’s part of my mother’s legacy.

'It really changed, along with the red carpets, awards-show programming and fashion.'

The show suffered a decline in popularity following Joan's death in 2014, with her replacement as the show's comedic anchor Kathy Griffin lasting just a single season before being axed.

It was also mired in controversy after panellist Giuliana Rancic made an off-colour joke about singer Zendaya's dreadlocked hair on the show's 2015 Oscars special, musing that it 'smells like patchouli oil… or maybe weed.'

She ended up publicly apologising twice, while long-running panellist Kelly Osbourne was forced out from the show in the aftermath.

Fashion Police: The Farewell is currently scheduled to air on E! on November 27.

The show began in 2012, with its roots in Joan's well-received red carpet Fashion Review specials, which started in 1994.

Some celebrity guests are said to be taking part in the special, while popular segments such as Bitch Stole My Look, Starlet Or Streetwalker and Guess Me From Behind, will get final airings.

In addition there will be highlights of Joan's work on the programme over the years, and clips from an unaired episode in which she and her sidekicks paid tribute to the fashion of the 1980s.

E! president Adam Stotsky said: 'We’re going to take a look back and celebrate some of the show’s most memorable moments and hosts and gags.

'It’s an opportunity to celebrate the franchise, celebrate Joan and how much we miss her, and pull back the curtain and show fans some things that they haven’t seen.'
