HOMS – Militant fighters of the Islamic State (ISIS) on Saturday made new gains in Syria’s central Homs province after clashes with pro-regime forces.
Dozens of Syrian army forces were reported dead in clashes with ISIS militants in the eastern countryside of Homs province.
The radical group took over the Hwesis town and al-Sawan hill east of Homs, after the withdrawal of the Syrian army units.
“At least 50 Syrian soldiers were killed on Saturday at the hands of ISIS militants in Homs,” local media activist Amro al-Hussein told ARA News.
ISIS launched two car bomb attacks in the vicinity of Sawan hill, hitting headquarters of the Syrian army there. 31 soldiers were reported dead, beside the two ISIS bombers, al-Hussein reported.
“Also, 19 soldiers from the Syrian army were killed in mortar shelling by ISIS militants near the Hwesis town,” the source told ARA News.
Syrian army officials refused to comment on Saturday’s developments in Homs.
