She said emotionally: 'It wasn’t my plan. I wanted to stay married forever.'

Getting teary-eyed while discussing the details of their courtship, Fergie began talking about how they had been together for five years before the Transformer actor got down on bended knee.

MailOnline have contacted Josh Duhamel's rep for comment.

The hitmaker added that they will always care for one another as they focus their energy on their four-year-old son Axl after splitting in February.

'I think 5 years, since 2004,' she explained. 'I love Josh. He’s the father of my child. We forever have that project together and we’re doing the best we can.'

'We were married on January 10th 2009 and dated for five years before that, so five years, got married. So like 8 years.'

In the interview with the daytime host, Fergie confirmed that they had split in February but wanted to keep their decision private until they had figured out how to move forward.

The Double Dutchess songstress announced in a statement released on September 14 that she and actor Josh had split earlier this year.

Fergie, real name Stacy Ann Ferguson, and Josh - who intend to co-parent Axl - started dating in 2004 and married in 2009.

The former couple said in their statement: 'With absolute love and respect, we decided to separate as a couple earlier this year.

'To give our family the best opportunity to adjust, we wanted to keep this a private matter before sharing it with the public. We are and will always be united in our support of each other and our family.'

'Friends have been expecting them to split for a while now,' said a source to UsWeekly. They are just too different. Josh is a normal guy and Fergie wants to have this Hollywood celebrity lifestyle. They just grew apart.'

Speaking to People magazine in September, The Black Eyed Peas singer admitted it was getting uncomfortable discussing their marriage in interviews when they had privately split.

She said: Honestly, it was just getting a little weird for us with all the romantic questions.

'We're great friends, we love each other so much, and it just got to the point where it was getting a little weird. There's no perfect time so we just decided to do it.'

The pair reportedly called it quits in February but only recently announced their relationship status.
