Joyce and Arthur Lovell had made no secret about adopting five-month-old Andrew in the summer of 1965, months after Joyce had suffered a devastating stillbirth. The fact that this white, working-class couple from New Cross, South-East London, had adopted a black baby might have been unusual at the time, but given the melting pot of ethnicities in their area, it was in no way extraordinary. However, the Lovells (together, top right) were harbouring a secret that would not be uncovered for another 30 years. For while Andrew (modern day, left, and with his father as a child, bottom right) had indeed been adopted, his real mother was much closer to home than he realised. When the truth emerged, it left Andrew feeling bitterly betrayed.

Embattled Theresa May used her speech tonight at the Lord Mayor's Banquet to launch a scathing attack on Putin's (top right) Russia - accusing the country of trying to 'undermine Western Values'. The Prime Minister said Britain would continue to provide assistance to states that were victims of aggression. Mrs May said: 'The UK will remain unconditionally committed to maintaining Europe's security.' She went on to say: 'As I said in my speech in Florence, the UK will remain unconditionally committed to maintaining Europe's security.

'It started eating my skin': Victim of nightclub acid attack by Ferne McCann's ex-boyfriend tells of horror as liquid burnt her chest - as he's found GUILTY and told to expect 'substantial' jail term

WARNING: GRAPHIC CONTENT Arthur Collins, the father of The Only Way is Essex star's newborn child, faces a 'substantial' jail sentence for hurling the corrosive substance over a crowd at Mangle E8 in Dalston, east London, in one of Britain's worst acid attacks. Phoebe Georgiou, 23, and Lauren Trent, 22, were celebrating their birthdays on April 17 when they were caught by the acid flung by Collins, who was out celebrating Ms McCann's pregnancy. Once active and outgoing, Miss Georgiou now confines herself to her family home in north London and suffers night terrors and anxiety in crowded places. 'It's not just physically scarring, it's mentally which is the hardest,' she said. 'Now I have a life sentence to deal with, with scars and mental injuries.'

Collins is said to have fallen out with the notorious London gang, also known as the Clerkenwell Crime Syndicate, over an expensive watch one of his friends tried to steal.

The father-of-one, named locally as Sorin Serbu, 36, (pictured) moved to the UK from Romania and was attacked by a gang of eight hooded people in Ilford, east London, after leaving a nightclub.

Queen was livid with Prince Edward for quitting Marines

When it comes to his sons, it would be easy to think that the macho Duke of Edinburgh has most in common with Prince Andrew (right, as a young boy and inset, top being held by his mother as a baby). After all, it was Andrew, his third-born son, who risked his life in the Falklands war as a Royal Navy helicopter pilot - just as Philip had risked his own as a naval officer during World War II. But the boy closest to the Duke of Edinburgh's heart is his youngest; Prince Edward (left), the one who chose to work in the arty world of television and - much to the dismay of the Queen - dropped out of the Royal Marines. On top of that, he had to face unfounded rumours that he was gay. Interestingly, Philip (pictured with Fergie, Andrew and Anne in 1987, inset) didn't press Edward into joining the Services. He wanted the young prince to go into accountancy, or at the very least take a management training course.

Man who left note on ambulance 'disgusted with himself'

A neighbour who left the note on an ambulance treating a critical patient who later died has described his actions as 'monstrous'. Hassan Shabbir, 27, (right) said his behaviour was 'appalling' and that he was 'disgusted with himself' after he had a rush of blood to the head and penned the note onto the ambulance's windscreen in Birmingham (left). It read: 'You may be saving lives, but don't park your van in a stupid place and block my drive'. The note went viral after a photograph of it was posted on Twitter by paramedic Tasha Starkey (inset) who attended the scene. But hours later the 42-year-old resident passed away after being rushed to hospital with 'massive internal bleeding'. Speaking after returning from his job as a teaching assistant at St Saviour's Primary School in Birmingham, he offered his apology to the deceased man's actions. The father, from Small Heath, Birmingham, said: 'What I did was monstrous, but I am not a monster. There is no justification for what I did. I am deeply ashamed at my actions, even before I found out the poor man had died.'

Police also found a book on clinical theology and a wedding catalogue addressed to a woman called Mandy Martin - but nothing led them to identify the man. It is unlikely he will ever be identified, despite a Europe-wide police search of DNA databases. They were unable to do dental checks as the man had no teeth. A forensic reconstruction of his face (left) was circulated but nobody could identify the man, who was of skinny build and was 5ft 5in to 5ft 6ins tall. Police believed he was in his 50s or 60s and may have been of Eastern European origin.

Painting appears to show a woman engrossed in an IPHONE

At first glance, it appears a baffling anachronism - a woman in 19th century dress walking head down through the countryside, with her eyes glued to a smartphone. The bizarre scene was spotted in an 1850s Waldmüller painting at the Neue Pinakothek museum in Munich by retired Glasgow government officer Peter Russell. While the true explanation behind the painting may be far more time-appropriate, the century-old piece bears remarkable similarity to a scene that's become all too familiar today, as 'distracted walkers' dominate the sidewalks with phone in hand.

At last, the true story of Murder Island

Scientists are still recovering the 125 bodies of those murdered by a brutal gang of rebels hell bent on becoming pirates after their ship crashed into an uninhabited island 400 years ago.  Beacon Island, later named Batavia's Graveyard and nicknamed Murder Island for the atrocity that would occur, was the site of Australia's first and biggest massacre.  Centuries after the shipwreck of the Dutch sailing ship on a tiny Western Australian island, the story of what happened to those who swam ashore remains largely untold.

The most flattering trend for older women in years

The most micro of mini skirts, the tightest of leggings and tops with necklines so low they are practically at the waistline are some of the latest fashion examples of Prince of Wales (POW) check. But, ladies, fear not. Because, as these pictures reveal, the return of the POW check is that rarest of style trends - one that flatters middle-aged woman far more than any reed-thin twentysomething. As Cara Delevingne, Cheryl Tweedy et al show, despite having enviable figures and youthful faces, some trends are just made for women of a certain vintage. Why? Well, POW check is a fabric that's at its best when combined with proper, precise tailoring - which makes it perfect for the neat coats, nipped-in skirts and carefully constructed trousers favoured by older women. More than this, though, it's a material with real history and heritage. It's a classic. No wonder it seems almost built for our bodies.

Essex baby with heart defect died waiting for operation

Iris Day (pictured), who was born with a heart defect and Down's syndrome, died on December 2 last year, a week before she was due to have surgery on December 9 at Evelina London Children's Hospital. An inquest in Chelmsford heard that a scheduled operation on November 25 was cancelled due to a lack of beds, and another on November 30 was also put on hold after another ill child took priority. There had been earlier delays available at the start of November but Iris, whose family live in Great Braxted, Essex, had a viral infection and the risks of surgery were deemed too high. Her parents Ben, 41, and wife Hannah, 29, (pictured right) had taken her home before the operation but she was rushed to hospital with breathing problems and died later that day.

Ms Black told Daily Mail Australia she was doing the dishes and about to head off to bed when she saw the incredible creature. 'She was directly in front of me, on the windowsill above the sink.' Ms Black was unfazed by the spider despite its phenomenal size and menacing look. She finished the washing up, grabbed her phone and snapped a video of the spider. 'Luckily she stayed there long enough,' Ms Black said. After being posted to social media, the footage of the spider has sparked some hilarious discussion on social media (pictured inset).
