Synthesis (Sony Music)
With members coming and going in the 14 years since their biggest hit Bring Me To Life, American band Evanescence feels increasingly like a vehicle for Enya-like singer and pianist Amy Lee. This fourth album, featuring orchestral updates of old songs, does little to dispel that notion. Its powerhouse vocals, cymbals and strings are an ambitious primer for next years tour.>★★★
Sheridan (East West)
Actress Sheridan Smith is a capable torch singer, although this covers album of pop hits and big ballads doesnt allow her to show her character. Having played Cilla on TV, she is at home on Anyone Who Had A Heart. Rufus Wainwrights Dinner At Eight (penned after the writer clashed with his father, Loudon) is a bold song choice. But Smith is most comfortable on the show tunes of Funny Girl, La La Land and new smash Dear Evan Hansen.>★★★
Standards (Decca)
SEAL is the latest pop performer to flick through the Great American Songbook. His voice is rich and supple, but the swing classics of the Rat Pack era offer a fresh challenge and Standards is mixed. His big band version of Ive Got You Under My Skin is too obvious, but he navigates Cole Porters tricky tempo changes with aplomb on Love For Sale. At heart, though, he remains a formidable soul singer rather than a jazz man.>★★★
Jupiter Calling (East West)
The Corrs have teamed up with Americana producer T Bone Burnett, and the combination works a treat on the second album since their 2015 comeback. Rather than revisit the shiny hooks of their chart heyday, the winsome foursome focus on robust musicianship and their roots in Irish music. Banjo, fiddle and subtle effects add texture, and the band push themselves over the eight minutes of The Sun And The Moon.>★★★★
Scream Above The Sounds (Parlophone)
Driven by chunky riffs and reliable grooves, the first two tracks on the tenth Stereophonics album suggest business as usual. But, as Caught By The Wind and Taken A Tumble fade away, things become more interesting. All In One Night, about a spot of impromptu roadside midwifery, is one of Kelly Joness more imaginative story-songs, setting an intrepid tone for a bluesy piano piece, a rasping acoustic song and Faces-style rockers.>★★★
Meaning Of Life (Atlantic)
Former American Idol winner Clarkson sounds reinvigorated by a recent change of record company. Now signed to Atlantic, famous for its jazz and R&B; classics, she taps enthusiastically into her new labels proud heritage. The retro-soul of Love So Soft suits the Texans powerhouse style. Cruel shows a more tender side. Earth Wind & Fire guest on Whole Lotta Woman, and producer du jour Greg Kurstin adds poppy touches.
