NASA’s Juno spacecraft has captured a breathtaking image of a raging tempest on Jupiter. Variations in the darkness of the clouds reveal what’s thought to be the depth of the storm, with darker clouds sitting deeper in the atmosphere. Juno spotted the turbulent scene during its ninth close flyby of the planet, from roughly 6,281 miles above the cloudtops.

A brand new Roadster emerged from the trailer of the company's other big reveal - an electric truck named the Tesla Semi - during a presentation at an airport in Los Angeles last night. The $200,000 sports car - an updated version of Tesla's first production vehicle - can seat four and travel 620 miles on a single charge, a new record for an electric vehicle. The car - which also features a removable glass roof - can go from 0 to 60 miles per hour in 1.9 seconds. 'You´ll be able to travel from LA to San Francisco, and back, at highway speed without recharging,' Musk said. 'The point of doing this is to just give a hardcore smackdown to gasoline cars.'

Headless skeleton of a terrifying 20ft sea monster hunted to extinction in the 18th century reappears on a remote Russian island
The remains of a 20ft (six-metre) long Steller's sea cow were found by nature reserve officials on the far flung Commander Islands in the Bering Sea. Ribs of the creature (left, top right) were found jutting out of the seashore like a 'fence'. An eight hour dig showed that this was a rare find of the existence sea cow, once endemic to the waters of these islands between Russia and Alaska (bottom right, artist's impression). They found 45 vertebrae, 27 ribs, a left scapula and other bones on the headless creature. Before the Ice Age Stellar's sea cows were found widely along the edge of the Pacific.
Stunning Levantine gold artefacts found in Tutankhamun’s tomb are revealed for the first time in almost a century
Almost 100 decorative fittings (pictured) for bow cases, quivers and bridles were transported hundreds of miles to be placed in King Tutankhamen's tomb in Egypt's Valley of the Kings. Their story can finally be told after they lay in a wooden box for more than 90 years after being discovered by British archaeologist Howard Carter in 1922. Among them are images of fighting animals and goats at the tree of life that are foreign to Egyptian art and must have come from the Levant - or modern day Syria.

How toxic is YOUR air? Interactive map reveals deadly pollution levels across Europe in real-time
The map, dubbed the 'European Air Quality Index', shows whether the air you breathe is safe, and lets you know what dangerous chemicals are in the air you breath, including PM2.5, which causes heart and lung disease. In the UK, London, Norwich, Belfast, Chatham and Newport have 'moderate' air quality ratings as a result of high levels of PM10 and PM2.5, while the rest of the UK ranks well. Elsewhere on the continent, Eastern European nations typically rate poorly, while Germany has excellent air quality, with many of its towns and cities given a 'good' rating by the EAA data. Launched by the European Environment Agency (EEA) and the European Commission, the project's readings are based on hourly data from more than 2,000 monitoring stations across Europe.
Astronomers reveal 55 Cancri e 'super Earth' just 40 light-years away could have an atmosphere just like our own
An exoplanet twice the size of Earth spotted orbiting a nearby star may have an atmosphere much like our own, NASA says. Data from the Spitzer Space Telescope suggests the super-Earth, called 55 Cancri e, may be enshrouded in a thick atmosphere that contains ingredients such as nitrogen, water, and even oxygen. While the presence of these molecules may sound promising, the researchers say there’s no chance the planet can support life – even on the cold side of 55 Cancri e, temperatures hit up to 2,600 degrees Fahrenheit.
Astronomers send a message to two potentially habitable planets 12 light years away - and if aliens see it, they could respond by 2042
Scientists from San Francisco-based Messaging Extraterrestrial Intelligence (METI) International beamed the message to Luyten's Star. The message itself includes a scientific and mathematical 'tutorial' as well as 33 short musical excerpts created by artists from Sonar music festival. It was beamed out in binary code at two different radio frequencies on October 16, 17 and 18, using the European Incoherent Scatter Scientific Association radio antenna in Tromsø, Norway.
Preying on the opposite sex: Shocking video reveals female mantis ripping the HEAD off a male suitor before mating with his body
Female praying mantises are notorious for their predatory skills; they’re bigger and stronger than males, and often devour their counterparts during sex. But, scientists have discovered that not even decapitation is enough to stand in the way of a male mantis looking to mate. A jaw-dropping new PBS video shows how males can continue the act even after their head has been chewed off, turning into a ‘zombie mating machine’ that both fertilizes the eggs, and provides the mother with necessary fuel.
Stunning NASA animation reveals the Earth's atmosphere in 2017 - complete with swirling smoke and hurricanes
A new NASA visualization follows sea salt, dust and smoke from July 31 to November 1, 2017, to reveal how these particles are transported across parts of the world and how they can help track weather events. For example, during the 2017 hurricane season, tropical storms and hurricanes were visible in the visualization because of the sea salt that is captured by the storms. Strong winds at the surface lift the sea salt into the atmosphere and the particles are incorporated into the storm. Pictured is Hurricane Irma, which formed off the coast of West Africa, and Hurricane Jose. The key along the bottom shows the color of the different aerosol particles: smoke, sea salt and dust. This visualization is a result of combining NASA satellite data with sophisticated mathematical models that describe the underlying physical processes.
The strange flash that lit up the Phoenix night sky: Unexplained light captured on security cameras
A mysterious bright flash tore across the Phoenix sky last night, sparking fresh fears of UFOs and alien invaders. But, it’s likely the fireball was a tiny chunk of space rock burning up in our atmosphere. The remarkable object was spotted by numerous people in the area, with reports streaming in from Arizona and the surrounding states, including California, Nevada, Utah and New Mexico.
