Inside the infamous NY Grey Gardens' historic yard sale

Long Island has no shortage of glamorous homes, but on Thursday eager bargain hunters were inspired by quite the opposite: The most infamously disheveled home in the New York island's history. Not that Grey Gardens looks like that today, of course - with its charming white highlights and blue-grey wooden walls it's the picture of a modern Long Island home. But in the 1970s (pictured inset) the house was home to a curious pair of hoarding hermits: Edith Ewing Bouvier Beale and her daughter Edith Bouvier Beale - or 'Big Edie' and 'Little Edie' (pictured top-left and bottom-right), to the few friends that would visit. Once the darlings of the New York socialite scene - and blood relatives of Jackie Onassis - by 1971 they lived in almost total seclusion and horrifying squalor, with a three-foot-deep pile of cat food tins in the kitchen and a home reportedly infested with rats, raccoons and at least one opossum. Their bizarre lifestyle, codependent relationship and proclivity to philosophizing about their weird existence made them the centerpiece of the celebrated 1975 documentary Grey Gardens, which has developed a huge cult following. So when pieces from the Edies' time were put up for sale in the now spotless - and under new ownership - home, it attracted a long line of eager buyers (top-right and bottom-left).
